Ipswich Town vs Liverpool prediction and odds
Liverpool are 64% favorites at Ipswich Town, but two early-season draws and four goals conceded leave the promoted side with a credible route into the game.

This could be uncomfortable if Liverpool allow it to become stretched. Andoni Iraola’s side have twice come from behind to draw 2–2, while Ipswich have already shown enough speed and ambition to trouble more established opponents.
Liverpool possess far greater attacking quality. They have not yet shown they can control a full Premier League game. The Reds will be hoping the addition of Bradley Barcola brings greater fluidity to an attack now worth well north of £400m.

The pricing asks an interesting question. How much weight should be placed on Liverpool’s superior squad, and how much on what Iraola’s team have actually produced?
Liverpool have opened with 2–2 draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest. They needed a late Dominik Szoboszlai penalty in the first and an 82nd-minute Victor Muñoz equalizer in the second. Four goals show the attacking threat. Conceding twice in each game points to the lack of control beneath it.
There were still encouraging signs against Forest. Alexander Isak scored, despite a largely absent performance, Florian Wirtz had a goal disallowed and then created Muñoz’s equalizer, while Cody Gakpo caused problems from both flanks. Liverpool dominated possession after halftime and kept finding ways back into the game.
Now Bradley Barcola joins that attack. His pace, ball carrying and final-third pressing fit Iraola’s football. Even if Friday comes too soon for a start, Liverpool can potentially introduce him against tiring defenders.
That is a considerable problem for Ipswich. Gary O’Neil’s side beat Sunderland 2–1 on opening day, then led Manchester United before losing 5–2. They were competitive for more than half the game, with Abdul Fatawu repeatedly beating Luke Shaw and creating Leif Davis’ opener. Once United increased the pressure, Ipswich’s midfield errors and defensive decisions turned a close contest into a heavy defeat.
Liverpool have the players to force the same collapse. Wirtz can receive behind Ipswich’s double pivot, Isak can occupy the center backs and the wide players can isolate Davis or Dara O’Shea. The favorite should create enough chances.
But Ipswich’s attacking threat is real. Julio Enciso has contributed to goals in both league games, Fatawu has looked dangerous on the right and Daizen Maeda offers direct running from the opposite side. Liverpool’s attacking fullbacks leave space behind them, while their new central-defense partnerships have not yet looked settled.
Liverpool deserve clear favoritism because their attacking ceiling is much higher and Ipswich have already conceded five in one game. Still, the narrow gap between the draw and an Ipswich win is revealing. If Liverpool lose control again, the promoted side have enough pace to chase more than a point.
The likeliest outcome remains a Liverpool win. It may require more recovery work than a 64% price usually implies.

Ipswich Town vs Liverpool odds
- Liverpool win — 64%
- Draw — 20%
- Ipswich Town win — 17%
Liverpool’s edge comes from the quality of their front four and the likelihood that sustained pressure eventually exposes an Ipswich defense that struggled once Manchester United raised the tempo.
Only three points separate the draw and Ipswich win prices. That is notable. The market is not treating an upset as a remote possibility if Liverpool’s defensive and midfield-control problems continue.
Ipswich team news
O’Neil has used a 4–2–3–1 built around quick attacks through Fatawu, Enciso and Maeda. Emersonn started at center forward in both league games, although Chuba Akpom strengthened his case with a late goal at Manchester United.
The main selection decision is in central midfield. Marcelino Núñez and Sasa Lukic started the first two league matches, but Núñez’s slip gave United their equalizer and O’Neil replaced him with Exequiel Palacios shortly after the hour. The Argentina international now has several training sessions behind him and is a strong candidate for his first start.
Palacios could be important against Liverpool’s pressure. He is comfortable receiving in tight spaces and should give Ipswich more composure when the first pass out of defense is contested. Starting him would probably mean choosing between Núñez and Lukic for the other holding role.
The attacking line should remain largely intact. Fatawu was Ipswich’s clearest threat against United, twice getting outside Shaw before the break. Enciso can carry the ball through the center and has supplied an assist in each league game, while Maeda’s running gives O’Neil an outlet when Ipswich defend deeper.
Davis provides another attacking route from left back, but his positioning creates a tradeoff. Advancing him can pin Liverpool’s right side back. Losing the ball behind him could leave Jacob Greaves isolated against Muñoz, Gakpo or Barcola.
Liverpool team news
Iraola has started with a fluid 4–2–3–1. Liverpool’s fullbacks push high, Wirtz moves between the lines and the wide players rotate around Isak. The approach has created chances, but it has also left large recovery distances when possession breaks down.
Barcola is the newest selection question. Liverpool have completed his transfer, and he can operate across the front line. A substitute debut looks more plausible than a start given the short preparation time, particularly after Gakpo and Muñoz combined effectively against Forest, but Iraola might be tempted ot throw him straight in.
Iraola must also settle the midfield. Alexis Mac Allister replaced Ryan Gravenberch against Forest and partnered Szoboszlai, with Wirtz ahead of them. That gave Liverpool more progressive passing, but Forest still advanced through direct balls and quick restarts. Gravenberch could return to the XI but Newcastle also caused all manner of problems with their quick transitions on opening weekend.
The back line remains in transition. Jérémy Jacquet has started alongside Virgil van Dijk, with Ronald Araújo used from the bench against Forest. Araújo offers greater recovery speed and experience, but changing the pairing again would do little for continuity. Joe Gomez is approaching a return from a muscle injury, while Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitiké remain longer-term absentees.
Isak should continue through the middle after opening his league account, but questions remain. Liverpool fans will hope that Barcola's quality will present the Swede with more chances after a disastrous first year at the club.
Wirtz also showed signs he can influence games more consistently against Forest, even if his first goal this season is still waiting.

Ipswich Town vs Liverpool key matchup factors
Can Ipswich play through Liverpool’s pressure?
Liverpool should press Ipswich’s center backs and double pivot aggressively. That makes Palacios’ possible first start particularly relevant. Ipswich need a midfielder who can receive under pressure without repeating the turnover that allowed United back into Sunday’s game.
If the first line is beaten, Enciso can attack Liverpool’s open midfield. If it is not, Ipswich may spend long periods defending their own box.
Can Fatawu attack the space around Kerkez?
Fatawu has the acceleration and directness to test Milos Kerkez, especially when Liverpool’s left back moves forward. His work against Shaw showed that Ipswich can create high-quality moments from a simple wide isolation.
Liverpool can reduce that danger by keeping possession and counter-pressing quickly. One clean Ipswich release, though, could put Fatawu against a retreating defender with Enciso and Emersonn arriving centrally.
Has Iraola found the right Liverpool midfield?
Mac Allister improved Liverpool’s buildup against Forest, but neither of the opening combinations has provided full control. Szoboszlai’s running and Wirtz’s positioning can overwhelm Ipswich in possession; the concern is the space they leave when an attack ends.
Iraola might think Gravenberch offers more defensive coverage, but the selection dilemma shows Iraola hasn't yet found a settled midfield balance.
What can Barcola change?
Barcola is unlikely to need many minutes to alter the matchup. His pace can stretch a compact defense, and his willingness to press suits the moment when Ipswich’s buildup becomes tired.
Barcola could make the final half-hour particularly difficult from the bench.
Ipswich vs Liverpool head-to-head
Liverpool won both Premier League meetings in 2024–25, beating Ipswich 2–0 away and 4–1 at home. Ipswich competed well for an hour in the first match before Liverpool’s quality decided it; the return fixture was more emphatic.
That history supports Liverpool’s price, but its predictive value is limited. Both clubs now have different managers and substantially changed squads. Ipswich are also approaching this top-flight return with a more experienced group than the one relegated in 2025.
What could move Ipswich Town vs Liverpool odds before kickoff?
Barcola’s international clearance and Iraola’s comments about his readiness are the clearest Liverpool variables. Confirmation that he can feature would strengthen an already deep attack, although a starting role remains unlikely.
Ipswich’s midfield selection also matters. A first start for Palacios could improve their ability to survive Liverpool’s press, while any fitness update affecting O’Neil’s other central options would narrow his choices.
The transfer window closes before the match, leaving time for either squad to change. Final lineups will then show whether Iraola prioritizes midfield control and whether O’Neil keeps faith with the side that started at Manchester United.
