Manchester City are 60% favorites at Crystal Palace, but their unsettled midfield and the hosts’ transition threat keep the draw firmly in play.

Both clubs began the Premier League season under new managers, with very different results but some familiar problems. Pierre Sage’s Palace created enough first-half chances to trouble Everton before losing 2-0; Enzo Maresca’s City needed goals in the 84th and 91st minutes to turn defeat into a 2-1 win over Bournemouth. City have more match-winners, but neither side yet looks fully settled.

What is the prediction for Manchester City vs Bournemouth?

Prediction markets for Crystal Palace vs Manchester City make City 60% favorites, with the draw at 22% and a Crystal Palace win at 18%.

Market data as of August 21. For the latest market-implied probability, check the OG app.

That is a substantial advantage, though not the price of a routine away win. The draw sitting only four percentage points above Palace is also revealing: traders see City falling short as a live possibility, but marginally favor resistance over an outright home upset.

City deserve favoritism. They have greater attacking depth, won the last two league meetings 3-0 and found a way past Bournemouth despite trailing until the final six minutes. Rayan Cherki changed that game from the bench with two assists, while Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo give Maresca several ways to attack Palace’s back three.

The vulnerability is control. Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders have left, with Nico González close to joining Newcastle, and Maresca used center back Marc Guéhi in midfield against Bournemouth. City still conceded first and allowed dangerous counterattacking moments. The system remains a work in progress.

Palace have the tools to test it. Adam Wharton can play through the first line, Daniel Muñoz carries a threat from wingback and Sage retained a 3-4-2-1 in his opening game. Palace struck the woodwork twice at Everton; the 2-0 scoreline was disappointing, but the performance was less so. The problem is availability. Chadi Riad was carried off with a knee injury, while Ismaïla Sarr missed the game with a groin issue.

City are the stronger side and remain the likelier winners. Palace’s clearest route is to keep their back five compact, use Wharton to escape pressure and attack the space around City’s improvised midfield. That is enough to make 60% more measured than dominant, but Palace will need far better finishing than they produced on opening day.

Premier League 26/27 predictions:

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City odds

  • Manchester City win — 60%
  • Draw — 22%
  • Crystal Palace win — 18%

The market gives City a clear edge without treating the game as a foregone conclusion.

The draw being priced slightly above a Palace win is telling. Palace’s more believable route is to frustrate City and attack selectively rather than turn the game into an open contest against the visitors’ deeper forward line.

Crystal Palace team news

Riad is the major new concern after suffering a knee injury at Everton. Palace had not confirmed the extent of the problem as of August 24, but he is a clear doubt. Takehiro Tomiyasu replaced him and is the obvious candidate to join Jaydee Canvot and Chris Richards in the back three; Óscar Mingueza offers a more progressive alternative.

Sage kept the 3-4-2-1 inherited from Oliver Glasner, with Wharton and Daichi Kamada behind Muñoz and Tyrick Mitchell. It suits a game in which Palace are likely to defend in a back five and break quickly.

The selection headache is in front of them.

Dwight McNeil started on his competitive debut alongside Mateta and Nketiah, but Sarr’s groin problem kept him out. If Sarr remains unavailable, Pino offers a quicker counterattacking outlet; McNeil provides better delivery, while Strand Larsen is the stronger aerial target. Dean Henderson recovered from his ankle problem and started at Everton.

Manchester City team news

Jérémy Doku is expected to miss the trip after Maresca said his calf injury would keep him out for two to three weeks. That should leave Semenyo as the main direct threat from the left, with Foden able to operate from the right or move inside.

City used a 4-2-3-1 against Bournemouth, but the larger question is midfield. Guéhi played an emergency role there alongside Elliot Anderson, with Nico O’Reilly higher up before Mateo Kovačić and Matheus Nunes came on. Guéhi would add security against Palace’s transitions but Kovačić would provide more natural distribution. The transfer window remains open and reinforcements could change the narrative ahead of the fixture, with Ayyoub Bouaddi set to join and Enzo Fernández still mooted to be clad in sky blue by the start of September.

Cherki has made the strongest case for promotion after two assists transformed the opening game. Starting him would probably push O’Reilly out of the advanced midfield role or move Foden wider. That is a genuine selection headache rather than routine rotation.

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City key matchup factors

Can Wharton release Palace’s runners before City recover?

Palace’s best attacks at Everton began with clean progression through Wharton and movement beyond the ball. City’s rest defense was vulnerable when Bournemouth bypassed midfield. If Wharton receives facing forward, Muñoz and Palace’s inside forwards can attack the channels; deny him time and Palace may be forced into longer passes toward Mateta, which favors Rúben Dias and Guéhi.

Will Maresca keep Guéhi in midfield?

The experiment helped City defend second balls and gave Guéhi license to attack set pieces, from which he scored the equalizer. It also underlined the absence of an established holding midfielder. Guéhi offers security, but a natural midfielder should move the ball more quickly through Palace’s compact block. One choice favors control; the other raises both City’s attacking ceiling and their counterattacking risk.

They have agreed a deal for 18-year old Moroccan prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi, but at just 18 years of age he's unlikely to be thrown in straight away. Meanwhile Enzo Fernández could yet join City, but probably not in time to start this game.

How much would Sarr’s return change Palace’s threat?

Sarr scored 21 goals in all competitions last season and provides the direct pace missing from much of the Everton game. His return would make it harder for City’s fullbacks to advance together and give Wharton a target behind the line. If he remains out, Pino is the closest stylistic replacement; McNeil and Nketiah offer different qualities but not the same breakaway threat.

Can Palace contain City’s penalty-area pressure?

City did not score until the 84th minute against Bournemouth, yet continued creating chances and eventually won through Guéhi and Joško Gvardiol. Cherki’s delivery adds another problem alongside Haaland’s movement and the aerial threat of City’s defenders. Without Riad, a reshaped Palace back three must defend crosses and set pieces while tracking Foden and Cherki between the lines.

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City head-to-head

Manchester City won both league meetings 3-0 last season. Haaland scored twice in the December game at Palace, with Foden adding the other, before Semenyo, Omar Marmoush and Savinho scored in the May return fixture.

The first game was more competitive than 3-0 suggests: Palace hit the woodwork twice and created openings through Wharton. Before those meetings, City won 5-2 in April 2025, while the previous two league fixtures at Palace ended 2-2 and 4-2 to City.

There is one important counterexample. Palace beat City 1-0 in the 2025 FA Cup final by defending compactly and scoring on transition. It should not outweigh the more recent league record, but it remains the clearest model for how the home side can make an 18% outcome plausible.

What could move Crystal Palace vs Manchester City odds before kickoff?

Palace’s medical updates carry potential to move the market. Confirmation that Sarr can start would restore their best transition runner; a serious diagnosis for Riad would confirm a forced change in the back three.

For City, the main signals will be Cherki’s role and the identity of the holding midfielder, which could yet be influenced by the transfer market. A lineup built for control would reinforce the favorite’s position, while another improvised midfield would leave Palace’s transition route open.

Doku is expected to remain out, so his absence is more likely already reflected in the price than to cause a fresh move.
