Brighton deserve the edge. They opened the league season by beating Aston Villa 4–0, repeated that score against Tromsø, then scored three at Chelsea. Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh remain out, but Maxim De Cuyper has supplied thrust from the left, Ferdi Kadioglu has moved higher on the right and Charalampos Kostoulas has led the line.
That adaptability is central to the 53%. Brighton led the Premier League for final-third regains last season and continue to create chances from pressure. De Cuyper and Kostoulas both punished Tromsø errors when playing out.
Leeds provide a tougher argument than the 23% might imply. They won 1–0 at Nottingham Forest through Anton Stach’s late free kick, then recovered from a poor first half to draw 1–1 with Brentford. James Trafford has made several important saves, and a rebuilt defense has conceded just once.
The question is which Leeds shape appears. Daniel Farke started both games with a back five. Brentford overran the Ampadu–Stach midfield, so Farke removed Jaka Bijol, added Ao Tanaka and changed to a back four. Leeds immediately improved. Lukas Nmecha later joined Dominic Calvert-Lewin and created the equalizer.
A back five could protect Leeds and give the draw a clear route, but leave Ampadu and Stach outnumbered. Starting with a four would provide more central control while exposing the spaces Brighton’s rotating attackers want to enter.
Brighton’s vulnerability is defensive rather than creative. Chelsea went 3–0 up inside 32 minutes, with Pedro Neto attacking Kadioglu’s side for the second. Brighton’s aggressive positioning can leave space for Noah Okafor and Brenden Aaronson, with Calvert-Lewin waiting in the box.
Brighton remain the likeliest winner because their press, attacking variety and home performance against Villa offer the stronger evidence. Leeds’ unbeaten start and tactical flexibility keep the game competitive. The draw sitting only three points above the away win reflects two plausible routes for Farke: contain Brighton with a five or use the four that changed the Brentford game.

Brighton vs Leeds United odds
- Brighton win — 53%
- Draw — 26%
- Leeds United win — 23%
Brighton have a clear advantage without this becoming mismatch pricing. Their 27-point lead over the draw recognizes the stronger attacking ceiling and home edge.
Only three points separate the draw and a Leeds win. The market is not treating Leeds as a side whose sole hope is prolonged resistance; their defense, set-piece threat and capacity to change shape give them a credible route to all three points.
Brighton team news
Hürzeler used a 4–2–3–1 at Chelsea. Bart Verbruggen played behind Mats Wieffer, Luka Vušković, Lewis Dunk and Olivier Boscagli. Groß and Yalcouyé formed the midfield pair, with Kadioglu, Gómez and De Cuyper behind Kostoulas.
That XI showed how Brighton are compensating for Mitoma and Minteh. De Cuyper can begin high on the left, while Kadioglu provides width on the opposite side. Ibrahim Osman and Amario Cozier-Duberry are the natural alternatives.
Jack Hinshelwood, Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari missed the Chelsea game and require updates. Ayari had started against Tromsø three days earlier, so his absence should not be treated as long term without confirmation. Hinshelwood is the most important possible return after scoring twice against Villa from the No. 10 role.
Kostoulas has started the last three games and scored against Tromsø. New loan arrival Promise David offers a more physical alternative but has yet to displace him.
Pascal Struijk could face his former club after joining Brighton this summer. He played 45 minutes against Tromsø and was on the bench at Chelsea. Starting him could allow Hürzeler to move Wieffer back into midfield, although the Chelsea selection placed Struijk behind the established defensive unit.
Leeds United team news
Farke’s starting structure has been a 3–4–2–1. Trafford plays behind Bijol, Joe Rodon and summer signing Tarik Muharemović, with Jayden Bogle and James Justin at wing-back. Ampadu and Stach form the central pair; Aaronson and either Okafor or Harry Wilson support Calvert-Lewin.
Rodon left the Brentford game after 34 minutes and is the main fitness concern. Nico Elvedi replaced him and would be the likely defensive change if Rodon is unavailable. Muharemović, another new arrival, was voted Leeds’ player of the match against Brentford and should retain his place.
Tanaka’s introduction for Bijol created a midfield three and transformed the second half. Farke could retain that structure to prevent Groß and Gómez finding space around Ampadu and Stach.
Nmecha’s introduction gave Leeds a second central forward and created the equalizer, while Daniel James added direct pace. Okafor replaced Wilson in the only change between the first two league XIs, so neither wide role is settled.
Gabriel Gudmundsson and Wilfried Gnonto returned to the bench against Brentford. Ilia Gruev is nearing a return from a knee injury. Leeds were also reported to be completing a deadline-day loan for left back Melvin Bard; confirmation and registration require checking.

Brighton vs Leeds key matchup factors
Can Leeds play through Brighton’s press?
Brighton’s pressure creates chances before opponents can organize.
Leeds struggled when Ampadu and Stach faced Brentford’s three-man midfield. Tanaka helped solve it. If Farke restores the back five, Leeds may spend too much of the game clearing toward an isolated Calvert-Lewin.
Has Brighton’s replacement width become a strength?
Mitoma and Minteh would normally define Brighton’s wide threat. In their absence, De Cuyper and Kadioglu have made the attack less conventional, with Gómez and Yalcouyé occupying the spaces inside.
That has produced goals, but not complete balance. Chelsea attacked the space around Kadioglu successfully. Leeds can ask the same question through Okafor or James if they regain possession cleanly.
Will Farke choose protection or control?
The back five has helped Leeds concede only once. It also allowed Brentford to dominate midfield. The back four improved possession but asked more of the center backs in open space.
This is the defining selection decision. Protection favors a low-event draw route. An extra midfielder gives Leeds a better chance of playing through Brighton and winning, while also making the game less secure.
Can Calvert-Lewin turn limited service into a goal?
Calvert-Lewin scored his first goal of the season against Brentford and gives Leeds a target for crosses, long throws and second balls. Ampadu’s delivery and Stach’s set pieces can help Leeds bypass Brighton’s press altogether.
Brighton were among the league’s stronger set-piece defenses last season and have added Vušković’s height. Leeds may not create many openings, so those dead-ball moments matter.
Brighton vs Leeds head-to-head
The teams split last season’s meetings. Brighton won 3–0 at home in November 2025, with Diego Gómez scoring twice, before Calvert-Lewin gave Leeds a 1–0 victory in the reverse fixture with a stoppage-time goal.
Before that Leeds win, Brighton had gone seven Premier League meetings without defeat against them. The last six top-flight games have produced two Brighton wins, one Leeds win and three draws.
Brighton have kept clean sheets in the last three Premier League home meetings, winning two and drawing one. That supports favoritism, although the teams’ current changes matter more than the older results.
What could move Brighton vs Leeds United odds before kickoff?
Brighton’s injury update is the largest live variable. A return for Hinshelwood would restore the No. 10 who scored twice on opening weekend. Rutter or Ayari becoming available would deepen the central options, while Mitoma remains the least likely of the attacking absentees to return immediately.
Rodon’s status could affect both Leeds’ personnel and formation. If he misses out, Elvedi is the direct replacement. Farke could instead use the disruption as a reason to start with a back four and Tanaka in midfield.
Bard would add another left-sided option for Leeds if his reported deadline-day loan and registration are confirmed, but a start would be ambitious.
The lineups will settle the central tactical question. Tanaka starting would signal that Leeds intend to compete for control; Bijol joining three center backs would place greater weight on the draw route.
