It is too soon to declare Chelsea the league’s best attacking side. Two games tell us very little, and Brighton have also scored seven goals. It is not too soon to be intrigued.
Chelsea have been fast, direct and faintly chaotic under Xabi Alonso; Arsenal have won twice without conceding, including a grinding 1–0 victory at Aston Villa. Sunday should tell us which early pattern is more substantial.

The pricing gives Arsenal a clear home edge without placing Chelsea in long-shot territory. Mikel Arteta’s side have beaten Coventry City 3–0 and Aston Villa 1–0 without conceding. Chelsea have beaten Fulham 3–2 and Brighton 4–3, scoring a joint league-high seven goals while allowing five.
That contrast is useful, but not as simple as defense versus attack. Arsenal were comfortable against Coventry and resilient at Villa, where they allowed no shot on target.
They also created little themselves until Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori combined, with Bukayo Saka finishing the decisive move. Their defensive level looks familiar. The attack is still being assembled.
Chelsea are almost the reverse. Cole Palmer, João Pedro and Morgan Rogers have formed an immediate connection. Five players have already scored in the league, and their speed in open space can damage anyone.
The problem is what happens between those attacks. Fulham and a heavily depleted Brighton both played through Chelsea, who have conceded in 18 consecutive league games.
Alonso’s side have averaged only 32% possession across their first two matches and had 26% against Brighton. That directness may be partly deliberate, but the lack of midfield control has also left the defense exposed.
Arsenal are built to punish that weakness. Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard can dictate the central spaces, while Bruno Guimarães offers even more control. Sustained Arsenal possession could leave Chelsea’s attacking trio disconnected from the ball.
There is a route for Chelsea. William Saliba and Jurriën Timber remain out, leaving an altered Arsenal defense without its quickest recovery defender.
Palmer can release Rogers or João Pedro after turnovers, with Neto adding another runner from wing-back. Chelsea’s best chance is to make this fast before Arsenal make it orderly.
Arsenal deserve favoritism because their structure is proven and Chelsea’s is not. But 57% feels appropriately cautious for a matchup in which the away side’s attacking ceiling is already obvious.
The market suggests the draw is the likelier alternative if Chelsea carry a threat without finding the defensive stability required to win.

Arsenal vs Chelsea odds
- Arsenal win — 57%
- Draw — 26%
- Chelsea win — 19%
Arsenal’s advantage rests on more than home status. They have the stronger defensive base, greater tactical continuity and a midfield better equipped to control the game.
The draw being priced seven points above a Chelsea win is telling. The market can see Chelsea disrupting Arsenal with their speed and scoring threat. It is less convinced they can manage the full game well enough to leave with all three points.
Arsenal team news
Arteta named an unchanged starting XI for the opening two league matches. David Raya played behind Ben White, Cristhian Mosquera, Gabriel and Calafiori, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Rice supporting Ødegaard in midfield. Saka, Christos Tzolis and Kai Havertz formed the attack.
Saliba remains out with a back injury and Timber is recovering from a groin problem. Mosquera has helped Arsenal keep consecutive clean sheets, although Chelsea represent a greater transition threat than Coventry or Villa.
Ezri Konsa made his debut from the bench on Monday and is the experienced alternative alongside Gabriel.
Guimarães also made his league debut as a substitute after recovering from a groin issue. He could replace Lewis-Skelly to give Arsenal greater security and press resistance, although Arteta may decide not to abandon a winning midfield.
The bigger selection decision is on the left. Tzolis was withdrawn at halftime at Villa; Eze improved Arsenal’s movement and contributed to the winner. Eze offers another receiver between Chelsea’s midfield and back three, while Tzolis provides more natural width.
Havertz should continue through the middle, with Viktor Gyökeres providing the more direct alternative. Saka remains the certainty. He has scored in both league games and is Arsenal’s clearest route to exploiting the space around Chelsea’s left wing-back.
Chelsea team news
Alonso has used a flexible 3–4–2–1, but his midfield remains unsettled. Roméo Lavia and Malo Gusto started centrally against Brighton because Moisés Caicedo was only fit enough for the bench, Reece James was returning and Enzo Fernández was omitted amid transfer uncertainty.
Caicedo’s comeback lasted only 14 minutes before he went off again. Chelsea are assessing whether he aggravated the problem that kept him out of the opening game.
His availability could materially change this matchup: Chelsea need his mobility and ball-winning if they are to stop Rice, Ødegaard and potentially Guimarães controlling the center.
The transfer deadline should clarify Fernández’s future before Sunday. If he stays, Alonso gains another route to retaining possession rather than relying on transitions. James could start in midfield or at wing-back after coming through his substitute appearance.
Emiliano Martínez made several strong saves on his Chelsea debut despite conceding three times. The back three of Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill is physically strong, but still learning when to step out of shape.
The attack requires fewer decisions. Palmer and Rogers operate behind João Pedro, with all three capable of carrying, combining or releasing a runner.
Neto scored from right wing-back against Brighton and gives Alonso an unusually attacking option there. That configuration raises Chelsea’s ceiling. It also helps explain why opponents keep finding room after turnovers.

Arsenal vs Chelsea key matchup factors
Can Chelsea make the game chaotic before Arsenal take control?
Chelsea’s best attacks have come quickly. Rogers drives through open space, João Pedro links play and Palmer finds the pass or shot at the end of the move. A slow game dominated by Arsenal possession would reduce all three strengths.
The opening phase matters. An early Chelsea goal would create the transitions Alonso’s side want. If Arsenal circulate the ball cleanly and push Chelsea into a 5–4–1, the visitors may struggle to connect their front line.
Who gives Chelsea control in midfield?
Lavia and Gusto can compete, but neither pairing from the opening two games has given Chelsea consistent command of the center. Caicedo’s fitness and Fernández’s post-deadline status are therefore central to the prediction.
Rice can protect transitions, Ødegaard can draw Chelsea’s midfield forward and Guimarães can help play through pressure. Arsenal should have the technical advantage unless Chelsea’s first-choice midfield returns.
Can Chelsea expose Arsenal’s Saliba-less back line?
Arsenal have conceded no league goal without Saliba, which says plenty about their structure and Mosquera’s start. Chelsea present a different problem. Their front three rotate constantly, while Neto can attack from deep and turn a three-player break into four.
Mosquera and Gabriel must decide when to follow João Pedro and when to hold the line against Rogers. One mistimed step could give Palmer the passing lane Chelsea need.
Will Arsenal punish Chelsea’s defensive instability?
Chelsea have conceded five goals and no clean sheet in 18 league matches. Their shape becomes vulnerable when a center back or wing-back advances and the midfield fails to cover the vacated space.
Saka and Ødegaard can target the area inside Chelsea’s left wing-back, while Eze would give Arsenal another player between the lines. Set pieces also matter. Arsenal beat Chelsea 2–1 in March through two corner goals, even if scorers Saliba and Timber will not feature this time.
Arsenal vs Chelsea head-to-head
Arsenal are unbeaten in the last five Premier League meetings, winning three and drawing two. They won the most recent game 2–1 in March 2026 after the teams had drawn 1–1 earlier in the season.
Arsenal scored twice from corners in March through Saliba and Timber, while Chelsea carried a threat before Neto’s second-half dismissal. Both scorers are currently unavailable, but Chelsea’s difficulty defending dead balls remains relevant.
Arsenal have also won the last three league meetings between the teams at home. That history supports favoritism, although Chelsea’s new manager and heavily rebuilt attack limit how much weight it should carry.
What could move Arsenal vs Chelsea odds before kickoff?
Chelsea’s midfield is the main variable. A positive Caicedo update would strengthen their ability to compete through the center, while the transfer deadline will settle whether Fernández remains available. James’ readiness to start is part of the same calculation.
Arsenal’s central-defense and left-wing selections may also matter. Konsa replacing Mosquera would add experience but break up a unit with two clean sheets; Eze starting over Tzolis would favor combination play over natural width.
Any late update on Saliba or Timber would be significant, although neither is currently expected to return. Confirmed lineups will show whether Arteta prioritizes continuity or adds Guimarães and Eze to exert greater control from the start.
