That makes this an unusually quick test of two offenses with championship ambitions—and of two defenses carrying more uncertainty.

Josh Allen, James Cook and new receiver DJ Moore give Buffalo several ways to attack. Detroit counters with Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.

The last meeting produced 90 points. This one has the personnel to move quickly too, although new schemes, a short week and important absences in the Lions' secondary could change the shape of the game.

Buffalo has the stronger early case.

Allen is the best individual player in the matchup, the Bills have home-field advantage and Joe Brady can build around the league's reigning rushing champion rather than asking his quarterback to solve every difficult down.

Cook ran for 1,621 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2025. His patience and acceleration can punish Detroit if the Lions widen their front to contain Allen, while Allen's own rushing threat changes the arithmetic near the goal line.

Moore adds the established outside receiver Buffalo lacked last season. Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid and Keon Coleman can now operate around him rather than being asked to carry the passing game alone.

Detroit's route to an upset is just as easy to see. The Lions scored 472 points last season, second most in the NFL, and return a group capable of attacking every level.

St. Brown can work option routes and in-breaking patterns against zone coverage. Williams can stretch the safeties. Gibbs can turn a checkdown or an outside run into an explosive gain.

That is a demanding first home assignment for Buffalo's redesigned defense. Jim Leonhard has moved the Bills toward a 3–4 structure after a season in which their pass rush win rate ranked 27th.

Bradley Chubb, Mike Danna and rookie TJ Parker add options around Greg Rousseau, but the system is new and Detroit's offense is built to punish hesitation.

The Lions have their own defensive problem. Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch will miss at least the first four games on the reserve/PUP list.

Detroit allowed 105 explosive plays in 2025, and taking two instinctive safeties out of the middle of the field creates obvious stress against Allen's arm and Moore's ability to win outside.

Aidan Hutchinson can change that argument. If he beats Buffalo's tackles and forces Allen to move before routes develop, the Lions can protect their secondary by shortening the play.

Detroit also recorded 46 sacks last season despite ranking only 26th in pass rush win rate, evidence of a front capable of finishing when it creates an opening.

The Bills deserve to begin ahead. They have the more stable offensive line, the game's most difficult quarterback to contain and the secondary weakness best positioned to attack. Detroit has enough speed and scoring power to make that advantage fragile.

Detroit's first task is deciding how aggressively to treat Buffalo's running game.

If the Lions play light boxes to protect a depleted secondary, Cook can run behind Dion Dawkins, Alec Anderson, Connor McGovern, O'Cyrus Torrence and Spencer Brown. If they bring a safety down, Allen gets clearer one-on-one opportunities for Moore and Coleman outside.

Hutchinson is the defender most capable of breaking that choice. Detroit can align him away from Dawkins, move him across the formation and use games with Alim McNeill or Tyleik Williams to test Buffalo's interior communication. Allen is strong enough to escape an initial rusher, but forcing him off his spot remains preferable to letting him survey a secondary without Joseph and Branch.

Buffalo can make the rush work harder with formation. Kincaid and Dawson Knox allow the Bills to show heavier personnel without giving up receiving threats, while Moore can move between the boundary and slot. Shakir's quick separation gives Allen an immediate answer when Detroit pressures.

The Lions face a different kind of problem against Leonhard's defense. Buffalo can present a three-man front, walk Chubb or Rousseau toward the line and change which defender rushes after Goff has set the protection. Goff is decisive when the picture is clean. Late movement is designed to make it less so.

Detroit can answer through Gibbs. Motioning him out of the backfield can reveal man or zone coverage, and quick throws force Buffalo's larger outside linebackers to tackle in space. Gibbs produced more than 1,800 yards from scrimmage and 18 combined touchdowns last season. He is not simply a way to stay balanced. He can be the organizing idea of the offense.

The offensive line matters more than Detroit's collection of playmakers. Penei Sewell remains the foundation, but the Lions enter with one of the league's youngest starting lines after further change inside. Buffalo will test the guards and center with Ed Oliver, Deone Walker and pressure looks that try to create a free runner through the A-gaps.

Goff can reduce that pressure with St. Brown. Few receivers are better at finding leverage quickly from the slot, and Drew Petzing can pair his option routes with LaPorta working behind the linebackers. Williams stretches the coverage far enough to create the space.

Buffalo's secondary is better equipped for that challenge if Christian Benford and C.J. Gardner-Johnson are healthy. Benford can handle an outside assignment, while Gardner-Johnson brings experience and aggression to a group learning Leonhard's system. The more difficult decision is how much attention to devote to Williams over the top without leaving St. Brown and LaPorta free between the numbers.

Both offenses should be comfortable playing quickly. The defensive winner may be whichever group creates two or three negative plays without exposing itself to the explosive answer.

Jared Goff remains the confirmed starting quarterback, with Josh Dobbs winning the backup job. New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing inherits the core of an offense that finished second in scoring last season.

Gibbs now leads the backfield after David Montgomery's departure. Isiah Pacheco offers a more direct complement, while Sione Vaki can contribute on offense and special teams. St. Brown, Williams, Isaac TeSlaa and Tay Martin made the initial 53-man roster at receiver, with LaPorta back after missing the final eight games of 2025 because of a back injury.

Detroit's offensive line is young around Sewell. Christian Mahogany, Juice Scruggs, Tate Ratledge and Blake Miller are among the leading interior options, while Cade Mays begins the season on injured reserve. The exact five-man combination used in Week 1 will provide the clearest indication of how the Lions intend to protect Goff on the short turnaround.

Joseph and Branch are on the reserve/PUP list and are unavailable for Week 2. D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin are expected to start outside at cornerback, but the nickel and safety combinations are less settled. Christian Izien, Chuck Clark, Avonte Maddox and Roger McCreary give Kelvin Sheppard several package-dependent options.

On Detroit's estimated Wednesday practice report before Week 1, Izien, edge defender Derrick Moore and defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo were listed as limited. Keith Abney II, Thomas Harper, Trevor Nowaske, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Jimmy Rolder were full participants.

Buffalo Bills

Josh Allen enters his ninth season as Buffalo's starting quarterback and his first with Brady as head coach. Brady's promotion preserves the central ideas of the offense, while Moore gives the Bills a proven receiver alongside Shakir, Coleman, Joshua Palmer and rookie Skyler Bell.

Cook remains the lead back, supported by Ray Davis and Ty Johnson. The starting offensive line largely returns intact, with Alec Anderson confirmed as the new left guard. That continuity is important against Hutchinson and a Detroit front that can move rushers across the line.

The defense has changed more substantially. Leonhard's 3–4 structure features Rousseau, Chubb, Danna, Michael Hoecht and Parker among the edge options. Zane Durant is on injured reserve with a neck injury and must miss at least four games. DeWayne Carter returned from the Achilles injury that cost him the 2025 season.

Ty Johnson did not participate in Buffalo's Wednesday practice before Week 1 because of a hamstring injury, while rookie defensive back Jordan Hancock missed the session with a quadriceps injury. Their availability for the Detroit game will depend partly on how they come through the opener in Houston.
