Miami Dolphins at San Francisco 49ers prediction and odds

The San Francisco 49ers are overwhelming favorites against the Miami Dolphins, but Malik Willis' mobility and Miami's young playmakers give the visitors a route to making the game less comfortable.

Miami Dolphins at San Francisco 49ers prediction

The opening weekend sent these teams in opposite directions. The San Francisco 49ers controlled the Los Angeles Rams in a 27-7 win, protecting Brock Purdy and leaning on a deep running game.

The Miami Dolphins lost 27-13 to the Las Vegas Raiders, but their new quarterback and several rookies still produced promising moments. Miami now faces a much harder test against a defense that allowed only one score in Week 1.

The gap is severe, but it is supported by more than reputation. San Francisco opened with a complete performance: Purdy threw three touchdown passes, the offensive line did not allow a sack and the 49ers ran for 174 yards. Their defense then kept the Rams scoreless over the final three quarters.

That balance is the problem for Miami. Loading the box against Christian McCaffrey and Kaelon Black creates play-action opportunities for Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel Sr., George Kittle and Demarcus Robinson. Sitting back invites Kyle Shanahan to keep running into favorable numbers.

Miami's strongest route begins with Willis. He passed for 220 yards and added 39 on the ground against Las Vegas, while rookie Caleb Douglas gained 94 receiving yards in his debut. Willis can escape a clean rush and change the math in the running game. Those traits matter against a defense built to dictate conventional passing downs.

The Dolphins also created two interceptions in Week 1. Another game with multiple takeaways could shorten the field, reduce the burden on a young offense and keep San Francisco from turning its control into an early two-score lead.

Still, Miami needs several parts of that underdog case to arrive together. San Francisco can win through its running game, Purdy's timing or a defense led by Fred Warner and Nick Bosa. The 49ers have the deeper set of answers and deserve their commanding position in the market.

Miami Dolphins vs San Francisco 49ers odds

  • San Francisco 49ers win: 89%
  • Miami Dolphins win: 12%

The market is pricing a mismatch rather than an ordinary home favorite. Week 1 reinforced that view: San Francisco looked settled across offense and defense, while Miami relied heavily on first- and second-year players and did not turn its takeaways or best return into enough points.

Miami Dolphins vs San Francisco 49ers game outlook

San Francisco should test Miami's run defense before asking Purdy to hold the ball. McCaffrey and Black combined for 133 rushing yards in Week 1, and the 49ers can use motion and condensed formations to make a young defense communicate before the snap.

Miami did not get overwhelmed on a per-carry basis against Las Vegas. The Raiders averaged 3.5 yards across 37 attempts. They did, however, stay in manageable situations often enough to preserve the full playbook. San Francisco is far more dangerous when second down remains flexible.

That is where the game can start to stretch. If Miami's linebackers step toward the run, Purdy can work the space behind them to Kittle or Samuel. If the safeties become involved, Evans and Robinson can attack isolated coverage outside. Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes in the opener and was not sacked. The ball came out on time.

Miami needs to disturb that rhythm without exposing its young defensive backs. Rookie cornerback Chris Johnson broke up two passes and made 11 tackles in his debut, while rookie safeties Michael Taaffe and Dante Trader Jr. each intercepted a pass. The production was encouraging. The challenge now is handling Shanahan's shifts, personnel changes and play-action sequencing without losing leverage.

When the Dolphins have the ball, the first objective is avoiding obvious passing situations. Bosa can collapse the edge, Warner closes underneath space quickly and San Francisco's coverage becomes more aggressive when it knows a throw is coming.

Achane must therefore be more than a conventional runner. Screens, option routes and perimeter touches can make the 49ers defend horizontally and give Willis easier completions. Douglas also showed that Miami has a receiver capable of winning downfield, particularly when Willis extends the play.

Willis' legs are the variable. A disciplined pass rush can keep him contained, but one missed assignment can turn a covered third down into a first. Miami needs those unscripted gains because sustaining long drives against this defense will be difficult.

San Francisco also returns from the first regular-season NFL game in Australia. The additional recovery time helps, but the physical effects of long-haul travel remain relevant; our guide to the 2026 NFL international games explains why preparation and recovery can differ after an overseas trip. Miami should try to raise the tempo early and see whether the 49ers need time to settle.

Team news and injuries

Miami Dolphins

Malik Willis is Miami's starting quarterback and one of six team captains. His Week 1 performance was uneven, but the mobility was immediate: he ran five times for 39 yards and Miami's only touchdown.

Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell opened the season as the starting wide receivers. Douglas caught five passes for 94 yards, setting a franchise record for receiving yards by a player in his Dolphins debut. De'Von Achane remains the central offensive player, although Las Vegas held him to 36 yards on 11 carries.

The defense is unusually young. Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez wore the green-dot communication helmet and made 14 tackles, while Johnson recorded 11 tackles and two pass breakups. Taaffe and Trader produced the interceptions. Those players have real roles rather than developmental cameos.

Jordyn Brooks, Aaron Brewer, Patrick Paul and Zach Sieler remain important veteran anchors around that youth. Miami will need the protection led by Brewer and Paul to keep Willis from spending the afternoon escaping pressure before routes can develop.

San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy is the confirmed starting quarterback. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns in Week 1, distributing the scores to Evans, Robinson and Samuel.

McCaffrey carried 10 times for 68 yards, while rookie Kaelon Black added 65 yards on 14 attempts. That split gave San Francisco a way to manage McCaffrey's workload without abandoning the run.

Bosa, Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk were all active for the opener after managing health concerns during the build-up. Fred Warner returned from the ankle injury that ended his 2025 season and made 11 tackles while forcing a fumble.

Defensive lineman Alfred Collins is on injured reserve after suffering a torn patellar tendon in practice and is expected to miss the season. The 49ers elevated Ogbo Okoronkwo for Week 1 as part of the response to that loss.

Key factors that could decide Miami Dolphins vs San Francisco 49ers

Can Miami keep the 49ers behind schedule?

San Francisco's offense becomes much harder to read when the run, play action and quick passing game are all available. Miami does not need to dominate every rushing attempt. It needs enough early-down stops to force Purdy into longer, more predictable third downs.

Can Willis turn pressure into production?

Escaping Bosa is only the beginning. Willis must finish those plays with first downs rather than merely avoiding sacks. His ability to find Douglas after leaving the pocket could provide Miami's best source of explosive offense.

How will Miami's young secondary handle motion?

The Dolphins' rookie defensive backs made plays in Las Vegas. San Francisco will test their communication more deliberately. Kittle, Samuel and McCaffrey can all change alignments, forcing Miami to pass routes between defenders without creating an uncovered receiver.

Can Achane find space as a receiver?

Running directly into San Francisco's front may not be enough. Achane can be more damaging against linebackers and safeties in space, especially if Miami uses motion to identify coverage and creates quick throws before the rush arrives.

Will Miami convert its best opportunities?

The Dolphins intercepted two passes and produced a 79-yard kickoff return in Week 1, yet scored only 13 points. An underdog at 12% cannot afford to leave similar field position unused. Short fields must become touchdowns.

Does San Francisco show any travel fatigue?

The 49ers have extra days between games, but they are still returning from Australia. Miami's best chance to make that matter is to play quickly, extend early drives and force San Francisco's defensive front to handle volume rather than allowing it to attack a series of short possessions.

What could move Miami Dolphins vs San Francisco 49ers odds before kickoff?

The first Week 2 injury reports carry the clearest potential to shift such a one-sided market. Any unexpected limitation involving Purdy, McCaffrey, Bosa or Kittle would remove part of San Francisco's advantage. Miami's outlook is especially sensitive to the availability of Willis, Achane and the offensive linemen responsible for managing the 49ers' front.

Practice participation after San Francisco's return from Australia may also reveal whether travel has affected workload plans. For Miami, clarity around the young receiver rotation and defensive packages could matter at the margins, although a major change in the current gap would probably require significant personnel news.
