Kenneth Walker III returns to Seattle with a running game the Kansas City Chiefs can build an offense around. His former team is still searching for a way to stop its own offense from wasting the defense's work.
The Chiefs are 5-0 after beating the Los Angeles Chargers 22-6. The Seattle Seahawks are 3-3 following consecutive three-point defeats, most recently a 17-14 overtime loss in Denver. Neither record fully explains the challenge on Sunday night.
Seattle held the Broncos to 168 yards and still lost. Kansas City kept the Chargers out of the end zone, but arrives to face a defense capable of making Patrick Mahomes work much harder for his openings.
For two teams in the Super Bowl conversation, this is a useful test of how well their offenses can function when the easy yards disappear.

Seattle's defense supports a narrow home edge. Mike Macdonald's team can keep opponents from making big plays and has had an extended break after playing on Thursday.
If the Seahawks make Kansas City sustain long drives, their offense should have opportunities to settle into the game.
That depends on protecting Sam Darnold. Seattle has allowed 10 sacks over its last two games, and Kansas City's rush is coming off a four-sack performance.
The Chiefs can undermine the home advantage without Mahomes having to dominate if they keep forcing Darnold into hurried decisions.
The matchup looks closer than Kansas City's perfect record suggests, but Seattle has plenty to repair before its narrow market advantage looks secure. Its defense can hold up.
Whether the offense can finish drives without surrendering field position is the harder question.
Kansas City Chiefs vs Seattle Seahawks odds
Kansas City Chiefs win: 45%
Seattle Seahawks win: 56%
The market makes Seattle a modest favorite, leaving Kansas City firmly in contention. Home advantage and the Seahawks' defensive performance offer reasons for that order; Walker's production and Seattle's recent protection failures make it a difficult game to separate.
Kansas City Chiefs vs Seattle Seahawks game outlook
Walker gives Kansas City a way to test Seattle before asking Mahomes to attack the secondary. He rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers, repeatedly turning contact into extra yardage.
Seattle needs its first tackler to slow him down enough for help to arrive. Missed tackles would let the Chiefs stay patient and keep their passing options open.
Mahomes also has to account for a defense that limited Bo Nix to 107 passing yards last week. Taking the short completion is useful only if the receiver can move the chains or create a manageable next down.
Kansas City cannot assume that underneath throws will turn into the same yards after the catch against this opponent.
Seattle has a different problem. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 12 passes for 134 yards in Denver, but finding him often did not produce enough points.
Darnold needs protection that lets him complete the next pass without another sack wiping out the gain. Shorter throws can help, with Rashid Shaheed's speed providing a reason for Kansas City to respect the deep ball.
If the Seahawks fall behind early, their line will face more obvious passing downs. Staying close allows them to mix the run with those quicker completions and choose when to take a downfield shot.
Injury report and team news
Kansas City Chiefs
Jaylon Moore left the Chargers game with a concussion, while fellow tackle Josh Simmons had already been ruled out with a back injury. Their availability could affect how much help Kansas City needs to leave in protection against Seattle's front.
Rashee Rice missed Week 6 with hamstring and knee issues. His status for Seattle remains unresolved as of October 20. Xavier Worthy caught seven passes for 73 yards in his absence, giving Mahomes a productive option while the receiving group was short-handed.
Travis Kelce sustained an ankle injury against the Chargers but played through it. That is different from being ruled out or facing a confirmed restriction for this game.
Seattle Seahawks
Anthony Bradford returned to practice on Monday after knee and hip injuries. Macdonald said a good week would put the right guard in position to play a substantial role on Sunday, but activation from injured reserve remains necessary.
Zach Charbonnet could also make his season debut after returning to practice following an ACL injury. Macdonald left open the possibility of a limited role. Emanuel Wilson and George Holani remain available backfield options, while Jadarian Price is not eligible to return from injured reserve until after this game.
Elijah Arroyo will miss significant time with a shoulder injury, according to Macdonald's October 19 update. Linebacker Drake Thomas, who missed the Denver game with an ankle injury, also has an unresolved status for Sunday.
Key factors that could decide Kansas City Chiefs vs Seattle Seahawks
Can Seattle tackle Walker before he breaks into the secondary?
Walker has already shown he can punish defenses that add an extra defender near the line. The answer cannot simply be to crowd the box. Seattle's front has to keep him from cutting through a missed assignment, and the second wave of tacklers has to finish the play.
Containing him without repeatedly pulling a safety forward would leave Macdonald more flexibility against Mahomes. If Walker keeps producing on early downs, Kansas City can choose its passing moments and make Seattle defend the full offense.
Can Darnold avoid another afternoon of drive-ending sacks?
George Karlaftis recorded eight pressures against the Chargers, and Chris Jones offers another threat inside. Bradford's possible return would help Seattle's options at guard, but the entire protection has to hold together.
Darnold also needs an answer when the first read is covered. Throwing the ball away can preserve a field-goal opportunity; taking another third-down sack can remove it. Seattle repeatedly paid that price in Denver.
Who benefits when coverage shifts toward Smith-Njigba?
Kansas City has to account for Smith-Njigba without letting Shaheed run behind the defense. Shaheed caught five passes for 66 yards in Denver and helped Seattle recover late with his work on returns as well.
For Darnold, the opportunity is to take what the coverage leaves open. For the Chiefs, it is to make him hold the ball while the rush arrives. Seattle needs more than a large receiving total from its leading target to turn those possessions into touchdowns.
Can the Seahawks make Kansas City earn its field position?
Seattle has committed 10 turnovers in its three losses, compared with two in its three wins. Against Denver, an overtime interception put the Broncos close enough to win without gaining another first down.
That is a particularly dangerous pattern against a quarterback who can capitalize on a short field. Seattle does not need to eliminate ambitious throws. It needs to stop giving Kansas City scoring opportunities before the defense has had a chance to force a punt.
What could move Kansas City Chiefs vs Seattle Seahawks odds?
The tackle decisions for Kansas City and Bradford's possible activation for Seattle could change the protection matchup. Rice's availability would also affect how the Chiefs distribute targets, while Charbonnet's return would give Seattle another option on the ground.
Arroyo's absence is already part of the personnel picture. Any further loss among Seattle's blockers or Kansas City's receivers would put more pressure on the remaining players to handle passing situations without extra help.
