The Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers return to AFC West play from very different positions. Denver is 2-2 after pushing the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers deep into the fourth quarter.
The Chargers are 0-4 and may have to protect Justin Herbert with a line assembled from rookies and reserves.
That makes this more than a meeting between a road favorite and a winless home team.
Denver's pass rush is built to attack uncertainty at tackle. Los Angeles still has the quarterback capable of making that advantage uncomfortable.

The Broncos have the healthier roster, the stronger defensive front and a secondary capable of making Herbert hold the ball. That last part becomes especially important if Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt cannot play.
The Chargers finished their 30-23 loss in Seattle with an offensive line of Logan Taylor, Jake Slaughter, Jacob Spomer, Cole Strange and Travis Burke. Four were rookies.
Denver does not need to manufacture pressure when Nik Bonitto, Zach Allen and the rest of its front can attack protection that is still learning how to communicate.
Los Angeles has the best player in the matchup at quarterback. Herbert threw two interceptions against Seattle, but he also helped turn a one-sided game into a seven-point contest and rushed for 40 yards.
If Mike McDaniel can create quick answers for pressure, Denver's defensive advantage becomes less decisive.
The Broncos' own offense keeps the market from moving further. Bo Nix and his teammates crossed midfield three times early against San Francisco but came away with two field goals.
They eventually scored a touchdown, yet the 24-14 loss again showed how thin the margin becomes when promising drives stall before the red zone.
Denver is the more complete team. Los Angeles can keep the game close if Herbert avoids obvious passing situations and the replacement offensive line settles quickly, but the Chargers have too many important injuries for the market to treat home advantage as the defining factor.
Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers odds
Denver Broncos win: 63%
Los Angeles Chargers win: 38%
The 25-point gap reflects roster availability as much as the teams' records. Denver is only 2-2, but both losses came against unbeaten opponents and its defense kept the 49ers quiet for most of three quarters.
Los Angeles has lost all four games and entered this week with major questions at both offensive tackle spots and in the secondary.
The wider AFC West outlook adds context. Denver entered the season trying to defend a division title, while the Chargers' 0-4 start has made every divisional game more urgent.
Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers game outlook
The first few Chargers drives should reveal how much of the offense McDaniel trusts with a changed line. Quick throws to Ladd McConkey, screens to Omarion Hampton and movement passes can reduce the amount of time Herbert spends in the pocket.
They can also move Denver's rush laterally rather than asking reserve tackles to win repeated one-on-one blocks.
Herbert's mobility could be key. He produced 40 rushing yards in Seattle, including a 26-yard run, and can punish man coverage when defenders turn their backs. Denver will want to keep the pocket compressed instead of simply racing around the edge and opening escape lanes.
If Pat Surtain II and Riley Moss are available, the Broncos can be aggressive. Surtain can take away one outside matchup without constant safety help, while Moss and Ja'Quan McMillian give Denver options against Los Angeles' multiple-receiver packages. Both starting corners left the loss to San Francisco, so their participation will shape how often Vance Joseph can bring pressure.
When Denver has the ball, the matchup is less straightforward. Nix has Jaylen Waddle and Courtland Sutton to attack vertically, but long-developing throws are not the only answer. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey can test a Chargers front that spent too much of the second half in Seattle reacting rather than dictating.
The Broncos also need to finish drives. San Francisco repeatedly forced them to settle for field goals until the fourth quarter. Against a Chargers team that still has Herbert, leaving four points on the field can keep an otherwise controlled game alive.
Team news and injuries
Denver Broncos
Nix remains the confirmed starting quarterback. He led an 11-play touchdown drive late against the 49ers and found Waddle for the score, but Denver's offense was unable to produce enough explosive plays before that point.
The early concern is at cornerback. Surtain and Moss both left the San Francisco game, and Denver finished without its two outside starters. Their practice participation will determine whether the Broncos can play their preferred coverage structure against Herbert.
Marvin Mims Jr. returned against the 49ers after dealing with a foot injury, although his third-quarter fumble on a punt return gave San Francisco a short field. Dondrea Tillman was the only Denver player ruled out before Week 4 because of injury.
Los Angeles Chargers
Slater has a high ankle sprain and is considered more likely than Alt to require a move to injured reserve. Alt is still being evaluated after leaving the Seattle game with a neck injury. Trevor Penning also remains in the concussion protocol, leaving the composition of the offensive line unsettled.
Taylor replaced Slater at left tackle, Burke took over for Alt on the right and Spomer entered at center as Slaughter moved to left guard. That group could be needed again against Denver.
Derwin James and Donte Jackson are considered week-to-week with hamstring injuries. James did not play in Seattle, while Jackson managed seven defensive snaps before leaving. McConkey aggravated the foot injury that limited him during the week and played only 24 snaps.
Key factors that could decide Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers
Can the Chargers protect Herbert with a reshuffled line?
This is the central matchup. Denver can rotate edge rushers and generate interior movement without sending extra defenders. Los Angeles needs clean communication more than perfection, because one free runner can ruin an otherwise sound drive.
Will Denver turn field position into touchdowns?
The Broncos moved the ball against San Francisco but did not finish enough drives. Nix needs cleaner execution near the edge of field-goal range, where one negative play can end the touchdown opportunity.
Can Herbert make Denver pay for pressure?
Herbert has the arm to attack behind blitzes and the speed to escape them. McConkey's availability would give him a reliable target on option routes and in-breaking concepts before the rush arrives.
What does Denver's secondary look like?
Surtain and Moss allow the Broncos to be far more flexible. If either is limited or unavailable, Denver may need to protect replacement corners and give Herbert more favorable coverage pictures.
Can the Chargers avoid another turnover-heavy start?
Los Angeles threw interceptions on its first and third possessions in Seattle and later lost a fumble on the final drive. A damaged lineup has little room to give Denver extra possessions.
Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers head-to-head
The teams split their two 2025 meetings, but the circumstances were different. Herbert led a late comeback in a 23-20 Chargers win in Week 3. Denver then won the regular-season finale 19-3 while Los Angeles rested several starters ahead of the playoffs.
The first game is the more useful comparison. Denver sacked Herbert five times and recorded 14 quarterback hits but still lost after failing to close out a fourth-quarter lead. With the Chargers now facing much greater protection uncertainty, that pressure battle is even more important.
What could move Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers odds?
The Chargers' offensive line will drive the largest movement. Confirmation that Slater or Alt can play would improve Herbert's outlook; losing both would leave Los Angeles asking an inexperienced group to handle one of Denver's deepest units.
The status of James, Jackson and McConkey also matters. On Denver's side, the availability of Surtain and Moss could change how aggressively the Broncos defend.
