Injuries are never fun; not for the players suffering them or the audience watching them. But, they are a part of the game of football and navigating them is necessary to find yourself in a position of success.

There’s a deep connection to the NFL injury report and prediction market prices. An injury can completely switch what’s happening in the prediction market depending on who’s suffering the ailment.

It’s important to arm yourself with the most up to date information when making wagers in a prediction market, as injuries can move the point spread and total by several points.

When do NFL injury reports come out?

Injury reports are given throughout the week leading up to a game. The two biggest days for the NFL injury report schedule, Wednesday and Friday, will impact the market the most.

Teams are required to finalize their official report at 4pm EST, two days before the game. Most of the time, since games are on Sundays, that means the official report for the game comes out on Fridays.

If a team is playing on Thursday night, you’ll see that report come out on Tuesday, and if they don’t play until Monday night, then you’ll see it on Saturday.

You’ll have a general idea of who’s going to be on that report though, as teams give practice and participation reports daily on Wednesday and Thursday leading up to the game.

What do NFL injury report designations mean?

  • Q - Questionable: This mean the player is dealing with an injury but it remains to be seen if that ailment will hold them out of the game
  • O - Out: If someone is out that means they will not be suiting up for this week’s game.
  • D - Doubtful: A doubtful tag signals that the player is unlikely to participate in the game but has not fully been ruled out.
  • IR - Injured Reserve: Injured reserve means the player has suffered an injury that will hold them out a minimum of four weeks. Teams use this tag on a player because it allows them to replace that player on the roster until they are fully healthy and activated.
  • PUP - Physically Unable to Perform: This designation is only for the beginning of the season. If a player is put on the PUP list they will miss at minimum the first four games of  the season.

Which player injuries affect NFL prediction markets the most?

A player’s position and role on the team will affect how the market reacts to the injury.

Nothing compares a starting quarterback injury market impact. If the quarterback is injured during and before the game, you’ll see the spread move in favor of the other team and the point total move down because it usually signifies that there will be less scoring for the affected team.

This can also be true for any all-star player at any skill position on offense or stalwart player on defense. If the injury occurs to a stud defensive player, you’ll likely see more points scored and the affected team will likely have a harder time stopping the opposing offense.

If an injury occurs to a back-up player or someone who is more easily replaceable on the team, then the market will not adjust as aggressively.

What happens to a prediction market contract if a player is injured during a game?

An injury may cause contract prices to change during the game, but it does not usually cancel the contract. Team spreads and point-total contracts still settle according to the final result and the market’s stated rules.

For player markets, participation matters. If the player is declared inactive or out before the game, the contract may be treated as cancelled. If the player enters the game and is then injured, the contract generally settles using the official statistics they recorded.

Always check the individual contract rules before trading, as settlement terms can differ by sport and market.

How quickly do NFL prediction markets react to injury news?

The market will always react immediately to the injury, as it’s driven by the people putting money into the market. You’ll see people taking positions against the injury, or buying back because they don’t believe it will be that much of a concern.

Sometimes you’ll have to react to prediction market repricing speed injuries, other times it might be best to wait for all of the facts to come out.

How do injuries affect long-term NFL prediction markets?

An IR or PUP tag will most likely affect a long-term position more than a smaller injury. However, if a player picks up an injury during the season, it could affect their performance on the field on a week-to-week basis without holding them out of the contest completely.

That’s why it remains important to follow injury news closely before taking a position in a prediction market.

Has the NFL raised concerns about injury-related prediction markets?

Yes. The NFL has urged prediction-market platforms not to offer contracts based on player injuries or availability. The league argues that these markets could give people with access to private medical or team information an unfair advantage and create risks for players and the integrity of the game.

Separately, NFL teams must provide accurate injury reports before games. Teams can be fined or face other penalties for breaking those rules, but this does not mean they must disclose every detail of a player’s medical condition publicly.
