Liam Coen now has an established contender. Week 1 asks how smoothly it can move forward after changing both its offensive line and backfield.

Cleveland is starting again. Todd Monken takes charge of a five-win team, Watson returns after missing all of 2025, and four veteran additions plus first-round rookie Spencer Fano could feature in a rebuilt offensive line.

The Browns also traded the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett, for Jared Verse and three draft picks.

That leaves a sharp contrast. Lawrence is coming off the best season of his career and has several ways to attack. Watson is playing his first regular-season snap since October 2024 against a defense that intercepted 22 passes last year.

Jacksonville should control the game if it can keep Cleveland's new pass rush away from Lawrence. The Browns need to make the opener slower and less comfortable than that.

Jacksonville has earned that position. Lawrence threw for 4,007 yards and 29 touchdowns last season, ran for another nine scores and finished fifth in MVP voting.

The Jaguars also return four receivers who produced at least 540 yards, with Travis Hunter available again after a knee injury ended his rookie season early.

The defense gives the favorite another route. Jacksonville allowed 3.9 yards per rush, intercepted 22 passes and finished with a plus-13 turnover margin in 2025.

Watson is returning from two Achilles injuries behind a line that has been rebuilt around players learning new positions and a new system. Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker can make that adjustment painful.

Cleveland's best response is to keep Lawrence off the field. Quinshon Judkins carried a struggling offense for stretches as a rookie, rushing for 827 yards and seven touchdowns.

If he can create manageable third downs, Monken can use play action, move Watson's launch point and feature Harold Fannin Jr. underneath rather than asking the quarterback to hold the ball against Jacksonville's edge rush.

The Browns also have enough defensive talent to disrupt a comfortable afternoon. Verse reached 150 career pressures faster than any player in Rams history, while Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell give Cleveland two experienced outside cornerbacks.

Jacksonville is changing all but one spot on its projected offensive line. Pressure without heavy blitzing would let the Browns crowd Lawrence's receivers and keep the game within reach.

Jacksonville still has the more settled quarterback, the deeper passing game and home advantage. The market hierarchy fits the matchup. Cleveland can challenge it only if Watson and the new line avoid the sacks and turnovers that made the Browns' 2025 offense so difficult to sustain.

Lawrence's 2025 production, the Jaguars' defensive turnover record and Cleveland's uncertainty at quarterback support that view, although the number leaves room for the Browns' new defensive front to change the game.

Jacksonville should begin by asking Cleveland to defend the full width of the field.

Coen can use motion and condensed formations to release Parker Washington, Brian Thomas Jr. and Jakobi Meyers into space, then force the linebackers to account for Brenton Strange and Lawrence as a runner. Hunter adds speed and uncertainty because he can appear outside, in the slot or on defense.

The Browns' best coverage answer starts up front.

Trading Garrett removes the player who produced 23 of Cleveland's 51 sacks last season, but Verse is not a developmental replacement. Alongside Maliek Collins and Mason Graham, he can attack a Jacksonville line with new starters or new positions at four spots.

The challenge is cohesion. Harrison has moved from right tackle to left tackle, Cole Van Lanen has gone the other way and rookie Emmanuel Pregnon worked his way into the starting group late in camp.

Verse against Harrison is one pressure point. If Collins and Graham compress the pocket as well, Lawrence loses the space to climb away from the edge rush.

Jacksonville can protect the line by leaning on a more varied running-back rotation. Bhayshul Tuten and Chris Rodriguez Jr. enter Week 1 as co-starters after Travis Etienne's departure.

Tuten brings acceleration; Rodriguez is built for contact. Multiple-tight-end formations with Strange and second-round rookie Nate Boerkircher can also change the surface of the run game without making the formation purely defensive.

Cleveland needs Judkins to have a similar effect. The Browns averaged 3.9 yards per rush and scored only 30 touchdowns last season. Watson cannot live in third-and-long, especially with Hines-Allen and Walker attacking a rebuilt line.

Fannin, who caught 72 passes as a rookie, can settle between linebackers and give Watson a quick answer against pressure.

Jerry Jeudy remains the Browns' most established wide receiver. Rookies Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion are expected to have prominent roles after strong camps, but both will be making regular-season debuts.

Jacksonville can challenge them with Hunter and Montaric Brown outside, Jourdan Lewis over the slot and Antonio Johnson at safety.

Watson must be decisive. Jacksonville's 22 interceptions last season were spread across the defense. Johnson and Devin Lloyd had five each, Jarrian Jones added three, and six other players made at least one.

Lloyd has since departed, but Hunter's permanent starting role at cornerback gives the secondary another aggressive playmaker.

Cleveland can make this uncomfortable by winning early downs, using Watson on designed movement and testing the Jaguars' new weakside linebacker before Jacksonville can unleash its pass rush. If the Browns fall behind and become one-dimensional, the home defense will be able to dictate the terms.

Cleveland Browns

Watson is the confirmed Week 1 starter. Monken named him ahead of Shedeur Sanders after the two split first-team work through much of the offseason and camp.

Watson missed the final 10 games of 2024 and all of 2025 while recovering from Achilles injuries, so this will be his first regular-season appearance in almost two years. Sanders is the backup. Dillon Gabriel is on injured reserve with a return designation.

The offensive line has been overhauled. Cleveland added Tytus Howard, Elgton Jenkins and Zion Johnson, re-signed Teven Jenkins and selected Fano ninth overall after Joel Bitonio retired. Fano has worked at left tackle, while the veterans give the Browns several possible combinations across the interior and right side.

Judkins returns as the lead running back after his 827-yard rookie season. Fannin heads a young tight-end room, while Boston and Concepcion join Jeudy at receiver.

On defense, Verse takes the leading edge role with Isaiah McGuire and Derek Barnett in the rotation. Maliek Collins has passed his physical and returned to practice, but Alex Wright is on injured reserve.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Lawrence is the established starter after producing a franchise-record 38 total touchdowns in 2025. Quinn Ewers, acquired from Miami at the end of August, is the backup.

Tuten and Rodriguez are listed as co-starters in the backfield. Rodriguez joined Jacksonville after rushing for 500 yards and six touchdowns for Washington last season. LeQuint Allen Jr. missed the end of preseason with a soft-tissue injury, leaving his early role less certain.

Hunter is healthy after rehabilitating the knee injury that kept him out of the final 10 games last season. He practiced on both sides during camp, although the Jaguars focused him mainly at cornerback late in the preseason. Jacksonville expects him to start opposite Brown and still contribute at receiver.

The projected offensive line is Harrison, Pregnon, Hainsey, Cleveland and Van Lanen, but its alignment changed during camp as the Jaguars managed injuries and assessed combinations. That unit should not be treated as settled until it has played together in a regular-season game.

Can Deshaun Watson handle Jacksonville's edge pressure?

Watson moved the offense in flashes during preseason, including an 11-of-15 performance for 126 yards against Chicago. He also lost a fumble on a fourth-down sack and later threw an interception against Buffalo. Hines-Allen and Walker can attack either tackle, so Cleveland needs quick throws and movement plays without the negative snaps.

Does Cleveland's new pass rush travel immediately?

Garrett cannot be replaced by one player. Verse does give Cleveland a younger elite edge defender, and the line around him has enough power to test Jacksonville's new combinations. If a four-man rush arrives, Ward and Campbell can play aggressively outside. If it does not, Lawrence has too many favorable targets for Cleveland to cover indefinitely.

Who replaces Travis Etienne's production?

Etienne accounted for 1,399 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns last season. Tuten and Rodriguez offer complementary styles, but neither has carried a full NFL backfield. Jacksonville may rotate them by situation rather than naming a conventional every-down starter.

The split matters most on early downs. Efficient rushing would slow Verse, keep Lawrence out of obvious passing situations and support play action from the same personnel groupings.

Can Quinshon Judkins keep Cleveland on schedule?

The Browns' offense needs manageable situations more than it needs immediate explosiveness. Judkins faced heavy defensive attention last season and still carried 230 times. A stronger line should help, but Jacksonville allowed only 1,455 rushing yards across 17 regular-season games.

Three-yard runs will not be enough. Cleveland needs Judkins to reach the second level and create easier throwing windows for Fannin and Jeudy.

How much does Travis Hunter change the matchup?

Hunter's two-way role makes personnel identification harder before the snap and workload management important after it. On defense, his speed gives Jacksonville another option against Cleveland's outside receivers. On offense, even a limited package can produce a favorable matchup because the Browns must prepare for him alongside three established targets.

He does not need to dominate both sides. A few high-leverage snaps—an outside breakup, a vertical route or a third-down reception—could be enough to tilt a possession.
