Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Chargers prediction

One team spent last season trying to survive its protection problems. The other has changed its head coach, starting quarterback and offensive structure after winning only three games.

The Chargers still reached the playoffs at 11-6 despite Justin Herbert facing more pressure than any other NFL quarterback.

Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt are back at tackle, and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has been hired to give Herbert a faster, more flexible offense. The interior of the line, however, has been rebuilt again after Tyler Biadasz suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Arizona begins Mike LaFleur's first season as head coach with Jacoby Brissett expected to start at quarterback.

Trey McBride, Marvin Harrison Jr. and 1,000-yard receiver Michael Wilson give him a credible group of targets. The difficulty is creating enough balance without James Conner and protecting Brissett against one of the deepest edge rotations in the league.

The market sees a large gap. Arizona has enough defensive talent to test Los Angeles Chargers' new protection, but they have more ways to recover if the game does not follow the original plan.

The Chargers deserve that position. Herbert is the best-established quarterback in the game, they have home advantage and Jim Harbaugh's team already found a way to win 11 games while its offensive line was breaking down around him.

Herbert threw for 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns last season. He also faced a league-high 263 pressures and played late in the year with a fractured left hand.

The return of Slater and Alt should reduce the amount of emergency football required from him, while McDaniel can create easier completions through motion, quick throws and running backs moving into space.

The Chargers are not dependent on one receiver. Ladd McConkey can separate from the slot, Quentin Johnston has led the team with eight receiving touchdowns in each of the past two seasons and Oronde Gadsden followed a productive rookie year with a larger role ahead of him.

Omarion Hampton and Keaton Mitchell give the backfield both power and speed.

Arizona's route begins with the pass rush. Josh Sweat recorded 12 sacks last season, Walter Nolen III can attack the middle and Darius Robinson has the size to move across the front.

Los Angeles Chargers are expected to start three new interior linemen after Biadasz tore his ACL in August. If Arizona can create pressure with four rushers, it can leave more coverage around McConkey and Gadsden.

Brissett then has to keep the game close. That means finding McBride underneath, using Wilson and Harrison outside and avoiding the long-yardage situations that allow Tuli Tuipulotu, Khalil Mack and first-round rookie Akheem Mesidor to attack without worrying about the run.

That is difficult without Conner. Rookie Jeremiyah Love and Tyler Allgeier offer a more athletic committee, but Love has been working back from an ankle sprain and the group has not yet carried an NFL offense together. Arizona may need short passes to function as part of its run game.

The Chargers' advantage can narrow if its new interior line fails its first test or if Slater and Alt are not yet ready for a full workload. They also have a new offensive system, and Week 1 can expose timing problems that did not appear in preseason.

The market's hierarchy is still persuasive. Arizona can pressure Herbert and has enough receiving talent to create scoring drives, but the Chargers have the stronger quarterback, the deeper pass rush and more proven answers across the roster.

Arizona Cardinals vs Los Angeles Chargers odds

  • Arizona Cardinals win: 18%
  • Los Angeles Chargers win: 83%

The current prices make Los Angeles Chargers one of the clearest favorites of Week 1. They reflect the difference between an 11-win playoff team returning an established quarterback and a 3-14 team beginning again with a new coach and expected starter.

There is more behind the gap than last season's records. The Chargers should be better equipped to protect Herbert, and McDaniel inherits a group that already includes McConkey, Johnston, Hampton and Gadsden. Our 2026 NFL season outlook identifies healthier offensive-line play as the most direct route to a higher ceiling for the Chargers.

Arizona's 18% price still represents a plausible football path. Sweat and Nolen can attack the area of the Chargers' offense with the least continuity, while McBride and Wilson give Brissett reliable targets.

The Cardinals do not need to match the Chargers' roster at every position. They need to win the pressure battle, finish drives and prevent Herbert from building an early lead.

These are market-implied probabilities, not guarantees. Readers comparing pressure, sacks and yards after catch can find those terms in our guide to NFL statistics.

Arizona Cardinals vs Los Angeles Chargers game outlook

McDaniel's arrival should change the shape of the Chargers' offense before it changes the personnel.

They can use motion to identify coverage and give Herbert access to quick throws before the rush arrives. McConkey is particularly useful there.

He can begin inside, move across the formation and run away from leverage on option routes, drags and crossers. Gadsden and David Njoku can force Arizona to defend larger bodies through the middle.

The run game supports the same plan. Hampton brings contact balance and power, while Mitchell can threaten the edge. Fullback Alec Ingold already knows McDaniel's system and allows the offense to shift between heavier formations and spread looks without changing the basic play family.

Arizona will want to make that movement cosmetic. Sweat can test either tackle from the edge, but the more revealing matchup may be Nolen against Kayode Awosika, rookie center Jake Slaughter and Cole Strange.

Slaughter moved into the center job after Biadasz was injured. A direct push through the middle would prevent Herbert from stepping forward even if Slater and Alt handle the outside rush.

Getting pressure with four is essential. Extra blitzers create space behind them, and Herbert has the arm strength to reach Johnston or rookie Brenen Thompson before a safety can recover. The Cardinals' young cornerback group should not be asked to hold up repeatedly in isolated coverage.

When Arizona has the ball, LaFleur can make the first reads clear for Brissett. McBride is the natural starting point. He can align next to the tackle, in the slot or detached from the formation, which lets Arizona see whether Derwin James, a linebacker or a cornerback follows him. Our football positions guide explains why a modern tight end can create those personnel conflicts.

James is one of the few defenders capable of answering the assignment in several ways. He can cover McBride underneath, pressure Brissett from the slot or fit against the run without forcing The Chargers to substitute. They should vary his role rather than give Arizona the same picture on consecutive downs.

Wilson and Harrison can create problems outside. Wilson caught 78 passes for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns last season, while Harrison remains the receiver Arizona needs to turn into a consistent downfield threat. Brissett does not have to force deep throws. Back-shoulder routes and intermediate in-breakers can punish cornerbacks who sit on McBride's shorter work.

Protection will decide how much of that menu stays available. Tuipulotu produced 13 sacks in 2025, Mack has returned and Mesidor adds another explosive rusher.

If Arizona falls behind the chains, the Chargers can rotate all three and move James toward the line without asking one defender to play every pressure snap.

The Cardinals' answer should be tempo, screens and a shared backfield. Allgeier can handle the more direct carries, while Love offers acceleration if his ankle allows him to play normally. Brissett must also be willing to end a play with a short completion. Holding the ball in search of a larger gain invites the matchup Los Angeles Chargers want.

Arizona can make this competitive by slowing the first half and forcing the Chargers to complete long drives. An early turnover or two empty red-zone trips would change the feel quickly. If Los Angeles Chargers protect cleanly and score first, the Cardinals may be pushed away from the balanced offense LaFleur wants to establish.

Team news and injuries

Arizona Cardinals

Brissett is the expected Week 1 starter after receiving the majority of first-team work and agreeing to a revised contract during camp. Gardner Minshew II and rookie Carson Beck are the other quarterbacks on the active roster. Arizona has treated Brissett as the leader of the offense, but LaFleur had not formally announced the decision when camp began.

Conner was placed on injured reserve with a return designation while he continues his recovery from a serious ankle injury. He must miss at least the first four games. Love made the initial 53-player roster after spraining his ankle in preseason, but the first official game-week injury report will clarify whether he is ready for a normal role. Allgeier and Bam Knight provide the other active options.

The offensive line is expected to center on Paris Johnson Jr., Isaac Seumalo, Hjalte Froholdt, Isaiah Adams and Elijah Wilkinson. Rookie guard Chase Bisontis is on injured reserve and will miss the season. Tight end Tip Reiman is on the reserve/PUP list, so newly acquired Hunter Long adds blocking depth behind McBride and Elijah Higgins.

Sweat and cornerback Garrett Williams have both been activated from the reserve/PUP list. Their return matters immediately: Sweat leads the rush, while Williams gives Arizona an experienced option in the slot. Defensive lineman Zach Carter is on injured reserve with a return designation and is unavailable for Week 1.

Los Angeles Chargers

Herbert is the confirmed starter, with Trey Lance winning the backup job. McDaniel is the new offensive coordinator, while Harbaugh begins his third season as head coach.

Slater and Alt are back after season-ending injuries in 2025. Slater missed the entire season with a torn patellar tendon, and his workload has been managed at times during camp. Both tackles made the active roster and have been prepared with Week 1 in mind.

The uncertainty is inside. Biadasz tore his ACL on August 18, leaving Slaughter as the likely starting center between Awosika and Strange. All three would be new starters relative to the line that finished last season. Branson Taylor was placed on injured reserve with a return designation and must miss at least four games.

Hampton, Mitchell and Kimani Vidal form the active running-back group. At receiver, McConkey and Johnston are joined by Tre' Harris and several speed options, including Thompson. Mack returned in free agency, while Tuipulotu and Mesidor complete a pass-rush group that can be rotated by situation.

Key factors that could decide Arizona Cardinals vs Los Angeles Chargers

Can Arizona create pressure without blitzing?

This is the Cardinals' best route into the game. If Sweat and Nolen can win against the Chargers' protection with four rushers, Arizona can keep seven defenders in coverage and make Herbert complete several short throws per drive.

If the rush needs extra help, McConkey and Gadsden will find space behind it. Herbert can also attack the outside matchups before the secondary receives safety support.

Are Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt ready to stabilize the Chargers' line?

Los Angeles Chargers' two tackles change what McDaniel can call. Clean edges allow Herbert to hold the ball for deeper routes, and they let the tight ends release rather than remain attached to help in protection.

Both players are returning from serious injuries. The Chargers do not need them to be perfect immediately, but they do need the pocket to feel different from the one Herbert managed last season.

How does Arizona replace James Conner?

Conner carried the physical center of Arizona's offense. Without him, Allgeier can handle inside work and Love can supply the explosive element, but the division of touches is new and Love's ankle adds uncertainty.

The Cardinals still need efficient first-down runs. Brissett becomes much easier to pressure if the offense repeatedly faces third-and-long.

Can Derwin James limit Trey McBride without simplifying the defense?

McBride can become Brissett's answer to pressure and a way to keep drives alive. James has the coverage ability to follow him, but Los Angeles Chargers also uses James as a pass rusher and run defender.

If one assignment occupies him all afternoon, Arizona has already removed some of the unpredictability from the Chargers' defense, tempting them to change the matchup by down and formation.

Does Mike McDaniel give Justin Herbert easier answers?

Herbert created too much offense after the original structure failed in 2025. McDaniel's motion, quick passing concepts and use of running backs in space should reduce that burden.

Week 1 will show how quickly the timing has formed. Arizona can force hesitation by disguising coverage and passing routes cleanly between defenders. Even half a second matters against Sweat and Nolen.

Can Marvin Harrison Jr. threaten the Chargers outside?

Wilson and McBride already provide dependable volume. Harrison can change the geometry of the game if he wins downfield or forces a safety to stay over the top.

That would create more space for McBride and the running backs. If the Chargers can defend Harrison without altering their structure, Brissett will be asked to sustain drives through smaller gains.

Arizona Cardinals vs Los Angeles Chargers head-to-head

Arizona won the most recent meeting 17-15 in October 2024. Herbert threw for 349 yards, but the Chargers failed to score a touchdown and settled for five field goals. Conner finished with 152 yards from scrimmage and helped create the winning field goal on the final drive.

There is one useful lesson for this game: yardage alone does not guarantee control. Arizona kept the ball in front of its defense, prevented explosive scoring plays and made Los Angeles Chargers finish drives in a compressed field.

The rest requires caution. Conner and Kyler Murray drove the Cardinals' offense, Jonathan Gannon was the head coach and the Chargers were using a different offensive coordinator.

This is not a tactical blueprint for 2026, but it does show how the underdog can stay close if Herbert's productive possessions end without touchdowns.

What could move Arizona Cardinals vs Los Angeles Chargers odds?

The first official injury reports will clarify three important areas. Arizona needs to establish whether Love can take a normal workload. The Chargers need Slater and Alt available without major restrictions. Both teams also have players returning from reserve/PUP who have had limited preparation time.

Any change along the Chargers' offensive line would carry extra weight because the interior is already new. Slaughter is preparing to start at center, while Awosika and Strange are expected at guard.

Another absence would give Arizona more reason to attack the A-gaps and force Herbert away from the middle of the pocket.

Sweat's practice participation matters for the same reason. Arizona's upset route becomes narrower if its best edge rusher cannot handle a normal snap count. Williams' availability also affects how often the Cardinals can use nickel personnel against McConkey.

For Arizona's offense, Love's status will shape the split with Allgeier and the amount of speed available from the backfield. News concerning Harrison, Wilson or McBride would also have an outsized effect because that trio forms the experienced core around Brissett.
