Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cincinnati Bengals prediction

Week 1 brings together two teams whose 2025 seasons unraveled in very different ways. The Buccaneers opened 6-2 before losing seven of their final nine games. The Bengals lost Burrow for six starts, finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for a third consecutive season.

Both spent the offseason addressing the reasons for those declines. Tampa Bay strengthened its edge rotation and enters the season with a healthier offensive line. Cincinnati kept its established skill-position core around Burrow while rebuilding a defense that allowed 6,475 yards and 60 touchdowns last year.

That gives the opener a simple tension. The Bengals have the more settled passing game and home advantage. The Buccaneers have enough offensive talent to keep up, but their best chance may depend on whether a reshaped defense can disturb Burrow before Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins separate downfield.

Cincinnati's advantage begins with Burrow. Even in an injury-shortened 2025 season, he completed 66.8% of his passes, threw 17 touchdowns against five interceptions and posted a 100.7 passer rating.

Chase still produced 1,412 receiving yards while Higgins scored 11 touchdowns. Tampa Bay cannot concentrate on one target and expect the rest of the passing game to disappear.

The Buccaneers do have a plausible way into the game. Todd Bowles can attack the pocket with first-round rookie Rueben Bain Jr., Yaya Diaby and free-agent addition Al-Quadin Muhammad, who recorded 11 sacks for Detroit last season.

If that group creates pressure without forcing Bowles to send extra rushers on every passing down, Tampa Bay can keep more defenders available for Chase, Higgins and Mike Gesicki.

Cincinnati's renovated defense supports the market's position too. Dexter Lawrence II, Jonathan Allen and B.J. Hill give the Bengals a powerful interior rotation against a Tampa Bay line that was repeatedly disrupted by injuries in 2025.

That front can make Baker Mayfield move off his spot and limit the clean early-down carries that Bucky Irving needs.

The gap is meaningful, not decisive. Tampa Bay still has Mayfield, a healthier line and a deep receiving group if Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan are cleared. Cincinnati has the stronger starting point, but its advantage becomes less secure if Burrow is pressured consistently or Chase and Higgins remain limited.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Cincinnati Bengals game outlook

Cincinnati should try to establish Burrow's rhythm quickly. That does not have to mean a succession of deep throws. Chase can win on slants, crossers and option routes, Higgins can work the boundary, and Chase Brown gives Burrow a useful outlet when Tampa Bay's pressure arrives early.

The Buccaneers' answer will be movement before the snap and pressure after it. Bain and Diaby can rush from wide alignments, while Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey threaten the middle. If Tampa Bay forces obvious passing situations, Bowles can disguise which second-level defenders are rushing and which are dropping underneath Burrow's first read.

There is risk in that approach. Tampa Bay finished 27th against the pass last season and entered September with a thin secondary. Zyon McCollum and Jacob Parrish are expected to start outside, while rookie Keionte Scott is a candidate for slot work.

Leaving that group in isolated coverage against Chase and Higgins is a difficult way to live for four quarters.

On the other side, Tampa Bay's healthiest path runs through its offensive line. Tristan Wirfs has returned from the hamstring injury that cost him most of camp, and the Buccaneers expect to reunite the five-man unit that helped Mayfield throw for 4,500 yards and 43 touchdowns in 2024.

That continuity is immediately important against Lawrence, Allen and a Cincinnati front built to collapse the pocket from the inside.

Mayfield will also need an offense that is adjusting to two major changes. Zac Robinson is the new coordinator, and Mike Evans is no longer at the top of the receiver depth chart.

Egbuka led the team with 938 receiving yards as a rookie, while Chris Godwin remains most dangerous from the slot. If Egbuka or McMillan cannot play, third-round rookie Ted Hurst III may be asked to stretch the field sooner than expected.

The run game can make that transition easier. Irving enters the season healthy after shoulder and foot injuries limited him in 2025, and Kenny Gainwell arrives after surpassing 1,000 yards from scrimmage for Pittsburgh. Tampa Bay does not need to dominate on the ground. It needs enough efficient first-down carries to prevent Lawrence and Allen from attacking Mayfield in predictable situations.

Team news and injuries

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield remains the starting quarterback and has not missed a start in three seasons with Tampa Bay. Rookie Jalon Daniels won the backup job, giving the Buccaneers an inexperienced alternative if Mayfield becomes unavailable.

The main uncertainty is at wide receiver. Egbuka has been dealing with a toe injury and McMillan with a knee problem, and both had missed multiple weeks of practice as of September 1.

Bowles expressed optimism about Week 1 but described both players as day to day and week to week. Godwin, meanwhile, has returned to practice and was described by Bowles as looking sharp.

Bain returned to practice after a shoulder issue, and Bowles said the Buccaneers expect the rookie edge rusher to play. Wirfs is also back after missing most of camp with a hamstring injury. Linebacker Christian Rozeboom's foot injury leaves his availability less certain.

Cornerback Josh Hayes is on injured reserve with a return designation and must miss at least four games. Tampa Bay added Kevin Knowles to cover some of Hayes' special-teams work and provide depth in a secondary that began cutdown weekend with only eight players.

Cincinnati Bengals

Burrow is the established starter, with veteran Joe Flacco retained as his backup after starting six games during Burrow's 2025 absence.

The Bengals' offensive line is expected to feature Orlando Brown Jr. and Amarius Mims at tackle, with Ted Karras at center and a deeper collection of interior options than Cincinnati carried into last season.

Chase did not practice on September 3 because of a knee issue, while Higgins sat out with a heel problem. Zac Taylor has indicated optimism that both will be available for the opener, but their participation level remains one of the most important pieces of news around the game.

Defensive end Shemar Stewart remains on the active roster while rehabilitating a knee injury. Cincinnati has more cover up front than it did a year ago after adding Lawrence, Allen, Boye Mafe and rookie Cashius Howell. Cornerback Ja'Sir Taylor and rookie offensive lineman Brian Parker II are on injured reserve and cannot play during the first four weeks.

Key factors that could decide Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Cincinnati Bengals

Can Tampa Bay create pressure without overexposing its secondary?

This is the Buccaneers' biggest defensive question. Extra rushers can disrupt Burrow's timing, but Chase and Higgins are capable of punishing single coverage immediately. Bain, Diaby, Muhammad, Vea and Kancey must win enough individual matchups to let Bowles vary his calls rather than blitz out of necessity.

Can Tampa Bay's offensive line handle Cincinnati's new interior?

Lawrence changes the geometry of a protection plan. He can demand help from the center and a guard, creating cleaner edge opportunities for Mafe and Howell. Allen adds another experienced interior rusher, so Mayfield may have less room to step forward even when Wirfs and Luke Goedeke hold up outside.

Which running game keeps its offense on schedule?

Chase Brown rushed for 1,019 yards and added 437 as a receiver last season. Irving and Gainwell give Tampa Bay two backs who can contribute on all three downs. The team that consistently creates second-and-manageable situations will have more freedom to use play action and keep the opposing pass rush from attacking without hesitation.

How healthy are the two receiving groups?

The headline names are established, but availability could change the matchup quickly. Cincinnati's passing game looks very different if Chase or Higgins is limited. Tampa Bay has more uncertainty across the group, with Egbuka and McMillan working back from injuries and Evans no longer providing a fixed outside target.

What could move Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Cincinnati Bengals odds?

The first official practice reports should provide the clearest new information. Full participation from Chase and Higgins would strengthen Cincinnati's offensive outlook, while a setback for either receiver could narrow the gap.

Tampa Bay's price is especially sensitive to the availability of Egbuka and McMillan because their status affects how much vertical speed and formation flexibility Mayfield has around Godwin.

Confirmation that Wirfs and Bain can handle normal workloads would also matter for Tampa Bay. Rozeboom's status and any late changes in the Buccaneers' thin secondary are secondary considerations, while unexpected news involving either starting quarterback would overwhelm every smaller factor.
