Regional rivalries, national stereotypes, idiosyncratic characters and a deep, complex linguistic canon make it a ‘happy hunting ground’ for humor.
Here we’re exploring some of the most enduring one-liners, back-handed compliments and bizarre takes from the world of soccer.
Soccer championship 2026 jokes and memes
The 2026 Soccer Championships have given us some unforgettable, funny and meme-able moments. Let’s look at some of the best.
Scottish fans drinking the city dry
Stereotypes exist for a reason and when the ‘Tartan Army’ arrived in Boston ahead of their team’s early fixtures, business owners and locals alike were delighted. Many a meme grew as footage of Scottish revellers doing what they do best spread around the world.
Having not qualified for the five previous Soccer Championships, their presence in the United States resurrected an old classic.
“What do you call a Scotsman in the knock-out stages of the Soccer Championships?”
A clip of ducks in mini Mexico soccer shirts joining a fan parade captured hearts early on in the World Cup. Nobody knows who the ducks belonged to or who made the shirts, but fans loved seeing the cute little birds waddling along the street as if they’d always been there.

Japanese fans trashing the stadium
Japanese fans are famous for being courteous, polite and respectful. At most tournaments, a clip or photo of Japanese fans cleaning up after themselves will go viral, as it contrasts with clips of other stadiums being left in an untidy state after a game.
One mischievous content creator put a cheeky spin on the concept by sharing a reversed clip of Japan supporters tidying up a stadium, which appeared to show them moonwalking about, placing litter carefully under the seats.
Norway star scaring himself by eating
Later revealed as an AI fake, the clip of Norway’s star striker Erling Haaland eating next to a mirror went viral nonetheless. The distinctive, long-haired player who bears a striking resemblance to a Viking could be seen eating by himself, before being startled by his own reflection in a mirror.
Confused South Africans
Still images showing the faces of South African players struggling to understand the referee’s on-field announcement during the opener against Mexico captured the world’s imagination for their meme potential.
At least two players were captured by tight zoomed-in shots with looks of perplexation and anguish on their faces, while the referee struggled to communicate in broken English.
Dramatic red card announcement
In a game between Turkey and Paraguay, the referee from El Salvador turned himself into a meme with the way he announced a VAR review that resulted in a red card.
His dramatic delivery was turned into music, added to ominous-sounding soundtracks and generally became the source of good-natured online fun.

Quick and clean soccer jokes
“I’ve got a dilemma. I’ve just won a ticket to the soccer championships final. But I’m getting married on the same day. Please let me know if you want to go in my place.
The wedding is at St. John’s Church in Stockport. The bride’s name is Emma.”
“Why are Belgium supporters always so cold? They’re living in France’s shadow.”
“A Nottingham Forest fan left two tickets on his car dashboard. Someone smashed the window and left two more.”
“My husband says he’s leaving me because I think too much about soccer. I’m quite sad. We’ve been together for ten seasons.”
The Qatar manager is on holiday in New York City after the soccer championships. He sees an old lady struggling with her suitcases. “Can you manage?”, he says.
“Hey, you accepted the job. Don’t pass the buck now!”
Best soccer championship 2026 memes
Ref cam meme
Ref cam has been a revelation, giving audiences an on-field view of the action. But the cost to the referees has often been their dignity, making them look like futuristic surveillance drones.
Anthony Gordon meme
He scored in the semi-final against Argentina, he’s just secured a big money move to Barcelona, yet Anthony Gordon remains a figure of fun, all because of his uniquely and distinctly British phenotype.
Some compare him to Princess Diana, others say he looks like he’s escaped from a seminary while one social media user could picture him at the Battle of Agincourt.
Harry Kane lost voice meme
He barely made it through his post-match media duties because he’d lost his voice, but Kane battled on, with a paper-thin, unusually high pitched rasp. Thankfully his voice recovered.
Javier Aguirre memes
The Mexico boss Javier Aguirre resigned immediately after his team’s defeat to England. But not before he’d memed himself to global fame two times in 90 minutes.
Once for a friendly yet expletive-laden remark to the above-mentioned Anthony Gordon that we can’t repeat (look it up) and again for telling Jude Bellingham he wanted his shirt after the game. The definition of a good loser.
Classic soccer pub jokes
The great thing about soccer jokes is that they’re interchangeable. You can mix them up to make almost anyone the target. Here’s a few great joke formats for mocking your rivals.
“Did you hear about the dustcloud over north London? Experts were baffled. It turns out it was just the Tottenham Hotspur secretary opening their trophy cabinet.”
“Chelsea have just signed a Brazilian wonderkid. Xabi Alonso starts the training session. He holds the ball up and speaking very slowly, says “kick this into that”, pointing at the goal. He repeats it five or six times, until the new Brazilian interrupts. “Sir, I speak English well. You don’t need to explain it like I’m five-years-old.”
Alonso says “I know you speak English well. I am talking to Cole Palmer”
Funny soccer puns, one-liners and headlines
"Why was the soccer pitch always wet? Because the players kept dribbling."
“Why should you never date a soccer player? Because fewer than one in ten will be a keeper.”
“What does (striker) have in common with a jigsaw? He always falls to pieces in the box.”

Why is soccer so easy to joke about?
Soccer is a simple and relatable sport, so fanatical supporters and casuals alike can relate to the emotions, frustrations and humor it creates. Soccer jokes work well because it’s easy to riff on a team that’s down on its luck or a player that’s done something stupid.
Plus, soccer is full of eccentric characters and mavericks about whom jokes just come naturally.
