Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts prediction and odds

Baltimore and Indianapolis arrive at Week 1 with identical 8-9 records behind them and very different ideas about how to move forward.

The Ravens changed head coaches for the first time in nearly two decades, hiring Minter and rebuilding a defense that gave up 4,403 passing yards last season.

The Colts kept Shane Steichen and Daniel Jones together after an Achilles injury ended a promising start and preceded a seven-game losing streak.

The established stars remain. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry still give Baltimore a rushing combination that changes how every front must line up. Indianapolis can answer with Jonathan Taylor, an experienced offensive line and a deeper group of targets around Jones.

This game may turn on which rebuilt area settles first. Baltimore has a new center, a new offensive coordinator and several additions to its pass rush.

Indianapolis has replaced major pieces at linebacker and safety while preparing Jones to move naturally again. One side begins with the higher ceiling. The other has home advantage and a clear way to keep the game close.

Baltimore's advantage begins with a backfield that can force Indianapolis to defend every gap. Henry rushed for 1,595 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Jackson added 349 yards despite missing four games.

When both are threats, linebackers cannot flow toward Henry too early and edge defenders cannot chase Jackson without protecting the space behind them.

The Ravens also have more ways to attack Jones than they did a year ago. Baltimore recorded only 30 sacks in 2025, but Trey Hendrickson joins Mike Green and Tavius Robinson on the edge. Kyle Hamilton and Malaki Starks give Minter the flexibility to disguise pressure and coverage without making the defense predictable before the snap.

Indianapolis has a credible counter. Taylor produced 1,585 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns last season, while Jones completed 68% of his passes and averaged 8.1 yards per attempt before his Achilles injury ended the campaign.

Keenan Allen now joins Alec Pierce, Josh Downs and Tyler Warren. If the Colts stay out of obvious passing situations, that group can test a Baltimore defense that allowed the second-most passing yards in the league last year.

The market's preference for Baltimore is justified by Jackson, the Ravens' rushing volume and the defensive talent added around an already strong secondary. It is not overwhelming. Jones' recovery, Indianapolis' ability to contain the run and the Ravens' unsettled center position leave the Colts with enough leverage to challenge the favorite.

Baltimore Ravens vs Indianapolis Colts game outlook

Baltimore should make Indianapolis solve the run before it reveals too much of Declan Doyle's new passing game. Henry can press the interior gaps, while Jackson's presence changes the responsibility of the backside edge defender.

Under-center play action, a larger feature during camp, can then create space for Zay Flowers and Mark Andrews across the middle.

Indianapolis defended the run well last season, allowing 3.9 yards per carry. That number will be tested differently here. DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart can close interior lanes, but the Colts have moved on from linebacker Zaire Franklin and safety Nick Cross.

The new second level must exchange assignments cleanly when Jackson reads the edge or carries the ball away from Henry.

The Colts' cornerbacks may help. Sauce Gardner can take away an outside route without constant safety assistance, and Charvarius Ward expects to be available after working back from a back injury.

If those two hold up against Flowers and Rashod Bateman, Indianapolis can commit more bodies to the box and make Baltimore earn its passing yards against tighter windows.

That plan becomes harder if Flowers moves across the formation. His 86 catches and 1,211 yards led Baltimore last season, and he can avoid a static matchup through motion, stacks and slot alignments. Andrews remains important too. Indianapolis cannot devote every coverage adjustment to Flowers and leave the middle open for Jackson's most experienced tight end.

When the Colts have the ball, Taylor should set the terms. Baltimore's defense is deeper up front, but Nnamdi Madubuike is still working back from neck surgery and his Week 1 status remains uncertain. Indianapolis can run at a lighter box, force Hamilton closer to the line and then build play-action throws behind the linebackers.

Jones was particularly effective on designed movement before his injury. Over the first 10 weeks of 2025, he completed 25 of 29 play-action rollout passes for 262 yards. Those calls can slow Hendrickson and move the launch point away from pressure, but they depend on Jones trusting his repaired Achilles and the Colts selling the run convincingly.

Allen gives him a reliable answer when the first read is covered. He has made a career out of changing pace, reading leverage and separating on third down rather than relying on pure speed. Downs can work underneath, Warren can stress linebackers and Pierce supplies the vertical threat after leading the league in yards per reception for a second consecutive season.

Baltimore is built to contest those routes. Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey can play outside, Hamilton can move between the slot and the box, and Starks can patrol deeper areas. Minter does not need to blitz on every long-yardage down if Hendrickson can win against Bernhard Raimann or force Indianapolis to slide protection toward him.

The Ravens have their own protection question. Baltimore had not settled its starting center entering September, with Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic still competing after Danny Pinter's injury. Buckner, Stewart and Laiatu Latu can attack that uncertainty. A few early disruptions through the A-gaps would make it harder for Jackson to operate the new offense on schedule.

Team news and injuries

Baltimore Ravens

Jackson is the established starter and said he is ready for the regular season after sitting out preseason games. Tyler Huntley is the primary experienced backup, with rookie Joe Fagnano also making the initial roster.

Flowers returned to practice on September 3 after missing roughly two weeks with what Minter described as a minor health issue.

His return is significant for a receiver group that lost several veterans during the offseason. Bateman remains the other established outside target, while rookie Ja'Kobi Lane is projected for a substantial role.

Madubuike took team-drill reps for the first time this summer during the opening week of September. Minter described the defensive tackle as day to day for Week 1 after neck surgery and a long rehabilitation.

Linebacker Teddye Buchanan is also close to returning from the knee injury that ended his rookie season, but his availability has not been confirmed.

Running back Adam Randall and cornerback Bilhal Kone are on injured reserve with return designations and must miss at least four games. Baltimore's center decision also remains open between Gwyn and Pocic.

Indianapolis Colts

Jones is confirmed as the starting quarterback. He took almost every first-team rep throughout training camp and did not require an injury rest day, an encouraging sign less than nine months after tearing his Achilles. Anthony Richardson Sr. has been named the backup, with Riley Leonard at No. 3.

Pierce came off the active/PUP list on August 27 following ankle surgery. He was expected to need a gradual return to full work, but the timing gave him more than two weeks to prepare for the opener. His availability matters because his vertical speed creates room for Allen, Downs and Warren underneath.

Ward returned to team drills after a back problem and said he expects to play in Week 1, although he also acknowledged the issue will require management.

Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt is suspended for the opener. Gardner, Ward and second-year corner Justin Walley therefore carry added importance against Flowers, Bateman and Baltimore's multiple-tight-end packages.

Buckner has worked back from offseason neck surgery and appeared in the preseason finale. His ability to handle a normal workload would strengthen the Colts at the exact point where Baltimore is least settled: the middle of its offensive line.

Key factors that could decide Baltimore Ravens vs Indianapolis Colts

Can Indianapolis control Baltimore's two-part running game?

Stopping Henry is not enough if the adjustment opens the edge for Jackson. The Colts need Buckner and Stewart to occupy blockers inside while the linebackers remain patient on read-option and play-action looks. Overcommitting in either direction gives Baltimore an easy answer.

How mobile is Daniel Jones in his first game back?

Jones does not need to carry the ball repeatedly. He does need to move the pocket, complete rollout throws and escape when Hendrickson wins early. If the repaired Achilles limits that part of the offense, Baltimore can collapse its coverage toward the middle and attack a more predictable launch point.

Can Baltimore's new center handle the Colts' interior pressure?

Jackson can erase protection mistakes with his movement, but constant pressure through the middle is different from pressure off the edge. It shortens his space, disrupts handoffs and forces him to retreat before routes develop. The communication between the eventual center, John Simpson and rookie Vega Ioane will be tested immediately.

Do the Colts' receivers stretch Minter's coverage structure?

Indianapolis can present four different problems. Pierce threatens deep, Allen reads leverage, Downs separates from the slot and Warren can work against linebackers or safeties. Baltimore has the personnel to match them, but Jones must identify where Hamilton is aligned and find the favorable matchup before pressure arrives.

Baltimore Ravens vs Indianapolis Colts head-to-head

The last two meetings both required overtime. Baltimore recovered from a late deficit to win 31-25 in 2021, while Indianapolis returned the favor with a 22-19 road win in 2023.

That history is useful because both games became possession-by-possession contests rather than clean expressions of the pregame favorite's quality. Its predictive value is limited, though. Gardner Minshew started for Indianapolis in 2023, several important players have changed teams and Baltimore now has a different head coach and offensive coordinator.

The more relevant carryover is the pressure a disciplined Colts running game can place on Baltimore. Zack Moss rushed 30 times for 122 yards in the 2023 win. Taylor presents a greater individual threat now, but the current Ravens are also deeper and more flexible on defense.

What could move Baltimore Ravens vs Indianapolis Colts odds?

Madubuike's status is the largest unresolved Baltimore question. Full participation would strengthen the middle of the Ravens' run defense and add another interior pass-rush threat. A limited role or absence would place more responsibility on Travis Jones and Calais Campbell against Taylor.

Flowers' practice workload and Buchanan's recovery also matter. For Indianapolis, the main information points are Pierce's progression, Ward's back and Buckner's ability to maintain a normal practice schedule. The identity of Baltimore's starting center could affect confidence in the Ravens' protection, especially if the competition extends deep into game week.

Unexpected news involving Jackson or Jones would outweigh every smaller personnel update. Otherwise, official practice participation and final game-status designations are the most likely sources of movement before kickoff.

The displayed figures are the market's current assessment and can change as new team information becomes available.
