Prediction markets make Tottenham 49% favorites, but their league goal drought and Villa's recent attacking lift leave both sides with plenty to prove.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa prediction

At the start of the season, both sides were considered to be in with a shot of Champions League qualification.

Four matches in, neither side has found a Premier League win. Tottenham have taken two points without scoring, while Aston Villa have one point and a single league goal.

This game becomes an early chance for alarm bells to start sounding.

However, there are signs of life beyond the league results. Tottenham scored five against Charlton in the EFL Cup, and Villa produced their best attacking display of the season in a 3-2 Champions League win over Club Brugge.

The question is whether either side can carry that freedom into a more cautious domestic contest.

The schedule complicates matters. Tottenham visit Liverpool in the cup on Tuesday, while Villa play Coventry on Wednesday.

Rotation, recovery and two disrupted back lines could matter as much as the form book.

The shape of the market is more revealing than Tottenham's position at the top of it.

The home side are favored, but the identical prices for the draw and Villa win indicate substantial uncertainty about whether their advantage will translate into a result.

That caution is easy to understand. Tottenham managed 14 attempts against Everton without consistently troubling Jordan Pickford.

Roberto De Zerbi liked the opening half-hour but acknowledged that the final-third decisions and physical level were not good enough in the 0-0 draw.

Consecutive clean sheets against Nottingham Forest and Everton are more encouraging. Sandro Tonali and Rodrigo Bentancur offer protection in front of a back line with recovery pace, giving Tottenham a platform while the attack remains unfinished.

Villa's 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest also left Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen injured, potentially forcing Unai Emery to rebuild the left side of his defense.

Still, Villa have shown a higher recent attacking ceiling. They registered 20 shots and eight on target while beating Club Brugge 3-2, with John McGinn, Emi Buendía and Nicolas Jackson scoring.

It gives Villa a credible route against opponents still learning when to accelerate and when to protect themselves.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa odds

  • Tottenham win — 49%
  • Draw — 26%
  • Aston Villa win — 26%

Tottenham have a 23-point advantage over each alternative, which is meaningful without making the market one-sided.

The tie between the other two outcomes is the important detail. Villa's poor league start has not created a clear gap between an away response and a draw, while Tottenham's lack of goals prevents the home price from becoming dominant.

Tottenham team news

Mykhailo Mudryk has been ruled out with an ankle injury, joining Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons on the sidelines. Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie missed the Everton squad after De Zerbi said both full-backs would be assessed rather than risked.

James Maddison returned to the bench against Everton, but a start is not automatic after a shoulder problem. Mateus Fernandes has been one of Tottenham's more productive creators and remains the safer projection at No. 10.

Dominic Solanke made his first league start of the season against Everton, with Mathys Tel dropping to the bench. His presence gives Sávio and Omar Marmoush a clearer focal point, although the front four are still short of shared playing time.

The likely structure remains a 4-2-3-1. Tuesday's cup game creates an obvious rotation headache: De Zerbi needs attacking rhythm, but several players are still building physical condition.

Aston Villa team news

Villa's immediate concerns are in defense. Pau Torres left the Nottingham Forest defeat after 25 minutes with a hamstring problem, while Ian Maatsen later suffered an ankle injury. Emery indicated that Maatsen could face a lengthy absence, leaving Matteo Ruggeri as the natural replacement.

Tyrone Mings replaced Torres and is the clearest candidate to partner Victor Lindelöf. Aaron Wan-Bissaka remains the likely right-back, although Wednesday's cup selection may alter the unit.

Nicolas Jackson started against Forest but was withdrawn at halftime after being booked. Tammy Abraham is the alternative at striker. Alysson strengthened his case by scoring from the bench, while George Hemmings had been preferred from the outset.

Emery has continued with a 4-2-3-1 built around Boubacar Kamara and Ross Barkley. The loss of Amadou Onana reduces the physical depth there. Villa need McGinn and Buendía to find Jackson between or beyond the center-backs more consistently.

Tottenham lineup

Tottenham are likely to line up in a 4-2-3-1:

  • Goalkeeper: Antonín Kinský
  • Right back: Archie Gray
  • Right center back: Jan Paul van Hecke
  • Left center back: Micky van de Ven
  • Left back: Andy Robertson
  • Central midfield: Sandro Tonali
  • Central midfield: Rodrigo Bentancur
  • Right wing: Sávio
  • No. 10: Mateus Fernandes
  • Left wing: Omar Marmoush
  • Striker: Dominic Solanke

Aston Villa lineup

Aston Villa are likely to line up in a 4-2-3-1:

  • Goalkeeper: Zion Suzuki
  • Right back: Aaron Wan-Bissaka
  • Right center back: Victor Lindelöf
  • Left center back: Tyrone Mings
  • Left back: Matteo Ruggeri
  • Central midfield: Boubacar Kamara
  • Central midfield: Ross Barkley
  • Right wing: George Hemmings
  • No. 10: Emi Buendía
  • Left wing: John McGinn
  • Striker: Nicolas Jackson

These projections follow the latest league selections while accounting for the injuries to Torres and Maatsen. The cup ties could still change the picture.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa key matchup factors

Can Tottenham turn control into clear chances?

The Everton game captured Tottenham's central problem. They reached promising areas, but attacks repeatedly ended with a delayed shot, a poor final pass or an isolated Solanke. Chance quality matters more than raw possession.

Villa's defensive injuries give Sávio, Marmoush and Fernandes a changed unit to test. The issue is coordination: their movements must open space for one another rather than crowd the same central lane.

How will Villa rebuild the left side of their defense?

Mings and Ruggeri bring experience, but they have not formed Villa's established left-sided partnership. Sávio's acceleration and Gray's supporting movement can test the spacing between them.

It also affects Villa in possession. Replacing Torres' passing and Maatsen's carrying could make it harder to escape Tottenham's first line of pressure.

Can Jackson threaten the space behind Tottenham?

Tottenham's clean sheets do not remove the risk created by De Zerbi's aggressive positioning. If the full-backs advance and a midfielder is drawn toward the ball, Jackson can attack the channel outside a center-back. Buendía and McGinn can release him early.

Discipline is part of the calculation. Jackson's booking against Forest led Emery to remove him at halftime rather than risk playing with 10 men.

Which midfield can impose its preferred tempo?

Tottenham want Tonali and Bentancur to move the ball quickly enough for Fernandes to receive before Villa settle. Villa may instead congest the center and ask Tottenham to create repeatedly from wide areas.

Kamara's positioning is vital. If he screens Fernandes, Spurs may again have the ball without enough access to the penalty area. Pull him away and Buendía has more defensive work to do.

What will the cup ties take out of both teams?

Tottenham have four recovery days after visiting Liverpool on Tuesday. Villa have less time after playing Coventry on Wednesday.

The cup lineups will be as important as the results. Heavy minutes for Solanke, Tonali, Kamara or Jackson could affect Saturday's intensity.

Brighton vs Arsenal head-to-head

Arsenal won both league meetings last season, 2-1 in December and 1-0 in March. Brighton had 60% possession in the latter game and pushed for an equalizer, but Saka's early goal separated the sides.

The previous two league meetings both finished 1-1, while Arsenal also won a Carabao Cup tie 2-0 in October 2025. The recent pattern favors Arsenal, but none of those five games was decided by more than two goals and three were settled by a single goal or ended level.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa head-to-head

Recent meetings have rarely ended in compromise. There has been no draw in the last 23 Premier League games between the clubs, a run stretching back to May 2012.

Villa have won seven of the last 10 meetings in all competitions, including 2-1 victories at Tottenham in the league and FA Cup last season. Tottenham won the most recent meeting 2-1 in May 2026.

Seven of the last eight produced at least three goals. That history shows how often the fixture has become open, but the current attacking form points in a very different direction.
