Prediction markets make Real Madrid 72% favorites, but Villarreal's improving attack and ambitious press could test a side still managing several players' recoveries.

Villarreal went into the international break with something to build on: consecutive 3-1 league wins, first at Málaga and then against Levante.
Iñigo Pérez's side are finding connections in attack, with Alberto Moleiro central to the improvement. Visiting Madrid is a different examination.
For José Mourinho, the break has brought players back into contention without giving him much time to work with the complete squad.
Real Madrid's last league match was a 2-1 defeat at Atlético Madrid, complicated by Dean Huijsen's red card.
The immediate question is whether the returning players can help Madrid handle pressure without exposing the defense behind them.

But Villarreal's recent improvement deserves attention. The 3-1 win over Levante involved Moleiro scoring and supplying both other goals.
They have a player connecting the midfield to runners, and alternatives capable of changing the front line from the bench. Madrid need to disrupt those connections before Villarreal reach the penalty area.
The biggest uncertainty is Madrid's readiness rather than the names available. A squad recall does not establish that every returning player can immediately sustain a demanding game. Can Madrid move the ball through Villarreal's first pressure and keep enough protection behind those attacks?
Real Madrid vs Villarreal odds
Real Madrid win — 72%
Draw — 16%
Villarreal win — 13%
Madrid are clear favorites. The market gives a draw only a modest edge over a Villarreal win, so the two routes to frustrating the home side are priced relatively close together.
That distinction fits an opponent whose coach wants to compete for the ball rather than simply spend the evening defending deep.
Real Madrid team news
Madrid's confirmed match squad includes Mbappé, Federico Valverde and Ibrahima Konaté. Huijsen is absent following his dismissal in the derby, leaving a center-back selection that could pair Konaté with Antonio Rüdiger.
Mourinho's Friday update addressed the recovery work involving Mbappé, Valverde and Konaté. Their inclusion improves the options; the allocation of minutes remains a separate decision.
A 4-2-3-1 would preserve the arrangement used in the derby, with Aurélien Tchouaméni and Valverde behind Jude Bellingham. Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva provide midfield alternatives. Denzel Dumfries started the last league match at right back, while Trent Alexander-Arnold started the preceding one against Elche. That is a genuine choice between different ways of supporting the attack, rather than an automatic return for either player.
Availability does not mean Foyth or Comesaña necessarily displace the players involved in two consecutive wins. Pape Gueye and Nathan Saliba offer continuity in midfield, while Ayoze Pérez started against Levante and Georges Mikautadze scored after coming off the bench.
Pérez's own preview makes the tactical intention clear: pressure Madrid high while respecting the space their forwards can attack. A 4-2-3-1 projection allows Moleiro to work between the lines, although the front four can interchange.
Real Madrid lineup
Real Madrid are likely to line up in a 4-2-3-1, subject to the final assessment of Mbappé, Valverde and Konaté's readiness to start:
Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois
Right back: Denzel Dumfries
Right center back: Ibrahima Konaté
Left center back: Antonio Rüdiger
Left back: Marc Cucurella
Right holding midfield: Federico Valverde
Left holding midfield: Aurélien Tchouaméni
Right wing: Arda Güler
No. 10: Jude Bellingham
Left wing: Vinícius Júnior
Striker: Kylian Mbappé
Villarreal lineup
Villarreal are likely to line up in a 4-2-3-1, with Pépé projected to replace the unavailable Buchanan:
Can Villarreal press Madrid without giving Mbappé and Vinícius room to run?
This is the central risk in Pérez's approach. Winning the ball near Madrid's goal would shorten the route to chances. If Madrid evade that first pressure, however, Villarreal's defenders may have to retreat against forwards already moving at speed.
The timing matters more than the ambition. One player pressing alone could leave a passing lane into Bellingham and turn an intended trap into an invitation.
Who stops Moleiro receiving between Madrid's midfield and defense?
Moleiro's influence against Levante came through both creation and finishing. Madrid therefore need to watch the receiver as well as the runners. If their holding midfielders are drawn toward the ball, he could find the space to turn and release Ayoze or a wide attacker.
Keeping that area protected would force Villarreal toward longer passes and less controlled attacks.
Does Madrid's right-back choice change how they escape pressure?
Alexander-Arnold offers a passing option for switching play or finding a runner early. Dumfries can provide forward movement beyond the winger. Either approach could stretch Villarreal, but the corresponding cover matters: pushing the right back forward leaves a channel the visitors can attack after a turnover.
Can Villarreal's substitutes sustain the threat late on?
Mikautadze and Gerard Moreno were involved in the move for the third goal against Levante after entering as substitutes. Pérez has attacking options beyond the first XI.
That could matter if Madrid manage the minutes of returning players. Changes in midfield protection may be as significant as changes in the forward line.
Real Madrid vs Villarreal head-to-head
Madrid won both league meetings in 2025-26: 3-1 at home and 2-0 at Villarreal. Those results support the scale of the home side's advantage, but both clubs now have different coaches. The historical scores cannot establish how Pérez's press will function against Mourinho's team.
What could move Real Madrid vs Villarreal odds before kickoff?
The starting roles and expected workload of Mbappé, Valverde and Konaté are the most important remaining Madrid variables. The right-back choice could also change how they build attacks.
For Villarreal, the replacement for Buchanan and decisions on Foyth, Comesaña and Mikautadze will show whether Pérez favors continuity or changes the balance of the side. Those selections could materially alter the press, midfield resistance and attacking support around Moleiro.
