Nottingham Forest enter Matchweek 5 with five points and growing signs that Oliver Glasner's system is taking shape. A 2-1 win at Aston Villa brought their first victory of the season, with summer arrivals Liam Delap and Daniel Muñoz heavily involved.
Coventry City's position is more uncomfortable. Four league games have produced four defeats, no goals and 10 conceded. The latest loss, 5-0 against Brighton, became a rout after Awoniyi's second-half red card, but Coventry's problems cannot be reduced to that dismissal.
This is a test of Forest's ability to control a game in which the market makes them clear favorites. Coventry have troubled strong opponents in spells, but must now turn those moments into goals without their two senior center-forward options.

Forest's advantage is supported by current evidence. They are five points and eight places above Coventry, have lost only once in four league games and produced their most complete attacking performance of the season at Aston Villa. Delap opened the scoring before Igor Jesus finished a move created by Muñoz and Morgan Gibbs-White.
Glasner has a recognizable 3-4-2-1, with Muñoz and Neco Williams stretching the pitch and Gibbs-White operating close to Delap. James McAtee has started every league game and looked increasingly comfortable dictating play from a deeper role.
Coventry's numbers explain the 19% away price. They are the only Premier League team without a point or goal after four matches, and Awoniyi's suspension removes the striker who started each of the past three league games.
There is still a reason the market stops short of treating this as a mismatch. Coventry were beaten only 1-0 by Manchester City and created two strong early opportunities against Brighton before the game escaped them. Jack Rudoni remains capable of finding space behind a midfield, and Milan van Ewijk gives Lampard an outlet on the right.
Forest also have uncertainty in defense. Nikola Milenković and Jair Cunha were late withdrawals at Villa with hamstring tightness, Nicolò Savona is injured and Murillo played despite knee discomfort. The makeshift back three survived that disruption, but Coventry have a route into the contest if they can attack the spaces around Forest's wing-backs.
The tension lies in whether Forest can turn territorial control into enough clear chances, and whether Coventry can finally convert a promising spell into something on the scoreboard.
Nottingham Forest vs Coventry City odds
- Nottingham Forest win — 57%
- Draw — 24%
- Coventry City win — 19%
Forest are clear favorites, but the five-point difference between the draw and away win is relatively small. Forest have shown greater control and resilience, yet two of their four league matches ended level. Coventry have not scored, but three defeats came against Arsenal, Manchester City and Brighton.
Nottingham Forest team news
Savona remains Forest's clearest confirmed absentee because of a knee injury. Milenković and Cunha require closer monitoring after hamstring tightness forced both out shortly before the win at Aston Villa.
Glasner responded by moving Ola Aina into the right side of a back three, giving Ousmane Diomande his first Premier League start in the middle and retaining Murillo on the left. That unit restricted Villa to seven shots despite having almost no time to prepare together. If Milenković and Cunha remain unavailable, there is little reason to disturb a combination that coped well.
The more pleasant selection question is at striker. Delap started and scored his first Forest goal, then Igor Jesus replaced Dan Ndoye and found the late winner. Delap remains the likelier starter; Igor is a genuine alternative from the bench rather than an automatic promotion after one decisive finish.
McAtee and Xaver Schlager formed the central pair at Villa. Ibrahim Sangaré, Nicolás Domínguez and Ryan Yates offer alternatives, but the current hierarchy favors the pair who started the win.
Coventry City team news
Awoniyi's straight red against Brighton carries a three-match suspension. He will therefore miss a return to the club he left during the summer.
That compounds an existing shortage. Haji Wright, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Josh Eccles and Luke Woolfenden were all ruled out against Brighton, while Sidiki Cherif was doubtful. Frank Onyeka has since been listed with a knock, making his status another important midfield variable.
Lampard has used both a 4-2-3-1 and a 3-4-2-1. He retained the back three against Brighton after an improved defensive display at Manchester City.
The enforced change comes at the top. Brandon Thomas-Asante is the most experienced available central striker. Loum Tchaouna and Cherif offer alternatives, but Thomas-Asante is the clearest replacement if Cherif remains short of fitness.
Coventry also face Aston Villa in the EFL Cup on Wednesday. That game should reveal Lampard's preferred striker without Awoniyi and whether Onyeka is ready to return four days later.
Nottingham Forest lineup
Nottingham Forest are likely to line up in a 3-4-2-1:
- Goalkeeper: Matz Sels
- Right center back: Ola Aina
- Center back: Ousmane Diomande
- Left center back: Murillo
- Right wing-back: Daniel Muñoz
- Central midfield: James McAtee
- Central midfield: Xaver Schlager
- Left wing-back: Neco Williams
- Right attacking midfield: Morgan Gibbs-White
- Left attacking midfield: Dan Ndoye
- Striker: Liam Delap
Coventry City lineup
Coventry City are likely to line up in a 3-4-2-1:
- Goalkeeper: Carl Rushworth
- Right center back: Ethan Pinnock
- Center back: Bobby Thomas
- Left center back: Aurèle Amenda
- Right wing-back: Milan van Ewijk
- Central midfield: Caleb Yirenkyi
- Central midfield: Matt Grimes
- Left wing-back: Jay Dasilva
- Right attacking midfield: Jack Rudoni
- Left attacking midfield: Ephron Mason-Clark
- Striker: Brandon Thomas-Asante
A fit Milenković would challenge Diomande for Forest. Coventry's lineup assumes Onyeka is not risked and Thomas-Asante leads the attack.

Nottingham Forest vs Coventry City key matchup factors
Can Forest's midfield turn possession into chances?
McAtee's deeper role gives Forest a passer who can find Gibbs-White and Ndoye between the lines. Schlager provides the coverage that allows the wing-backs to advance.
Coventry's response will depend on keeping Grimes and Yirenkyi close to the back three. If Rudoni drops too deep to help, Thomas-Asante could become isolated. If he stays high, Forest may find space through the middle.
Where does Coventry's first league goal come from?
Rudoni came closest against Brighton, forcing Verbruggen into two strong saves before halftime. His movement is even more important because neither Awoniyi nor Wright can lead the line.
Thomas-Asante can occupy the center-backs, while Mason-Clark and Van Ewijk run around him. Coventry do not need a new attacking identity, but four games without a goal makes every missed chance more expensive.
Will Forest's makeshift back three be tested differently?
Aina, Diomande and Murillo dealt with Villa after an improvised reshuffle. Coventry are less likely to dominate possession, but more willing to release runners quickly into the channels.
Muñoz and Williams are central to Forest's attacking width. The spaces behind them are also Coventry's most obvious route forward. Aina and Murillo may again have to defend wider areas than conventional center-backs would prefer.
How much does Coventry's cup tie matter?
Coventry play Aston Villa on Wednesday, while Forest have a full week to recover and prepare. The three-day turnaround is especially relevant for a squad already missing several players.
Lampard's choices matter more than the result. Heavy minutes for Rudoni, Grimes, Van Ewijk or the replacement striker would affect the Saturday projection. A rotated side would protect the league lineup and give fringe attackers a chance to make their case.
Nottingham Forest vs Coventry City head-to-head
The clubs have not met competitively since Forest's promotion in 2022. Their most recent league meeting ended in a 2-0 Forest win in April 2022, with Brennan Johnson and James Garner scoring.
Coventry won the reverse fixture 2-1 in August 2021, recovering from a goal down through Viktor Gyökeres and a stoppage-time Kyle McFadzean winner.
Those results show an evenly contested recent sequence, but almost every important player and both managers have changed since then.
Both teams can use a back three and aggressive wing-backs, creating direct contests across the width of the pitch.
What could move Nottingham Forest vs Coventry City odds before kickoff?
Coventry's EFL Cup tie is the first major information point. Thomas-Asante's role, Cherif's fitness and Onyeka's availability could all change the projected lineup.
Forest's press conference should clarify whether Milenković or Cunha can return and whether Murillo has suffered any reaction to playing through discomfort. The availability of even one specialist center-back would give Glasner more flexibility.
Confirmed lineups will be the final major input. Delap retaining his place would preserve Forest's latest attacking structure, while a different Coventry striker or formation would change how Lampard's side threaten on transitions.
