Detroit and the Jets both enter at 1-1, but neither is interested in celebrating how it reached that record. The Lions fell 21 points behind Buffalo before losing 41-31.
The Jets led Green Bay by 10 in the fourth quarter, then watched the game escape in overtime. Detroit has the deeper offense and home advantage. The Jets arrive with a defense that has already shown it can turn a talented opponent into a long afternoon.

Detroit merits the clear lead. Jared Goff has Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta around him, giving the Lions more ways to create favorable matchups than Green Bay managed against the Jets. Aidan Hutchinson also gives Detroit the edge threat required to attack an offense that allowed consecutive overtime sacks.
The Jets are more credible than 26% may first appear. They held Green Bay to 199 yards, forced four fumbles and limited the Packers to one conversion from nine third-down attempts.
The defense spent much of the afternoon controlling the game before a long pass-interference penalty and a 63-yard punt return changed the field.
The Jets' problem was finishing. Geno Smith helped build a 17-7 lead, but the offense failed on fourth-and-1 near midfield and went three-and-out after receiving the overtime kickoff. Thirteen accepted penalties for 156 yards repeatedly gave Green Bay easier exits.
Detroit has its own correction to make. Buffalo scored touchdowns on its first three possessions and created a 21-0 lead before the Lions settled into the game. The response was encouraging; falling that far behind again would make even a favored home matchup uncomfortable.
The Jets can keep this close by making Goff hold the ball, containing Gibbs on early downs and turning the game into a field-position contest.
Detroit's offensive range makes that difficult to sustain. The Lions should create more explosive chances than Green Bay did, and their pass rush can force Smith into the mistakes the Jets avoided for much of Week 2.
New York Jets vs Detroit Lions odds
- Detroit Lions win: 75%
- New York Jets win: 26%
The market gives Detroit a substantial advantage without treating the Jets as irrelevant. Home field, offensive depth and Hutchinson's pressure all favor the Lions.
The Jets' defense is the counterweight. Holding the Packers below 200 yards provides a much stronger foundation than the final result suggests. The Jets need their offense and special teams to stop wasting that work.
Detroit remains among the main NFC contenders in the wider 2026 NFL predictions, but the Buffalo loss showed why that status still needs defending on the field.
New York Jets vs Detroit Lions game outlook
The central matchup is Detroit's protection against the Jets' changing fronts. The Jets can rush with four, drop an edge defender underneath or bring pressure through the interior. Goff is most comfortable when the picture remains stable through his drop.
Detroit can answer with motion and quick distribution. St. Brown is difficult to remove because he can align in the slot, work option routes and turn short catches into first downs. LaPorta stresses the same middle defenders, while Williams forces the safeties to respect the deep ball.
Gibbs may decide whether the Jets can keep those coverages intact. If he consistently beats the first defender on runs and screens, the Jets will have to bring another player toward the box. That creates space elsewhere.
The Jets should attack Detroit more patiently. Breece Hall was held to 29 yards on 16 carries by Green Bay, but his 43-yard reception showed the value of getting him the ball away from crowded run fronts. Braelon Allen can handle the heavier inside work.
Smith threw for 247 yards without an interception in Week 2. Garrett Wilson remains his primary separator, with Adonai Mitchell coming off six catches for 63 yards. The Jets need those two to make Detroit's corners defend the full route tree rather than sitting on short throws.
Hutchinson is the obvious complication. Smith was sacked twice on the overtime series, and Detroit can create similar stress without sending extra rushers. The Jets' tackles must keep him from collapsing the play before Wilson and Mitchell reach the intermediate windows.
Team news and injuries
New York Jets
Smith is the starting quarterback and completed 27 of 41 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown against Green Bay. Wilson caught the touchdown, while Mitchell led the wide receivers with six receptions.
Linebackers Marcelino McCrary-Ball and Kiko Mauigoa, defensive lineman David Onyemata and tight end Mason Taylor all left the Week 2 game with injuries. Their availability will affect the defensive rotation and the Jets' two-tight-end packages.
The Jets' offensive personnel remains built around Hall, Allen, Wilson and Mitchell. The greater immediate concern is discipline after 13 penalties.
Detroit Lions
Goff, Gibbs, St. Brown and LaPorta all remain central to the offense. Gibbs and St. Brown each found the end zone during Detroit's attempted comeback at Buffalo.
Hutchinson recorded a sack and forced fumble against Josh Allen. Detroit's defense still conceded 41 points after allowing touchdowns on Buffalo's first three possessions, so the issue is collective execution rather than the absence of a premier edge threat.
The Lions have extra recovery time after playing on Thursday. That matters for a physical offensive line and a defense that spent much of Week 2 chasing Allen.
Key factors that could decide New York Jets vs Detroit Lions
Can the Jets slow Jahmyr Gibbs?
The Jets held Green Bay to 63 rushing yards. Gibbs is a different test because he can create the same damage on carries, screens and routes from the slot.
Does Detroit protect Goff cleanly?
The Jets' defense can win without scoring support if it controls the pocket. Detroit must prevent pressure from arriving through the middle and forcing Goff off his spot.
Can the Jets eliminate the penalties?
Thirteen accepted penalties undermined an otherwise strong performance. Detroit has too many offensive options to receive free first downs and favorable field position.
Will the Lions start faster?
Detroit recovered from a 21-0 deficit enough to make Buffalo work. A similar opening would give the Jets the exact slow, defense-led game they want.
Can Garrett Wilson win outside?
Wilson is the Jets' cleanest route to explosive passes. If Detroit can contain him with its normal structure, Smith may be forced into a succession of difficult third downs.
What could move New York Jets vs Detroit Lions odds before kickoff?
The Jets' injury cluster on defense is the main immediate variable. Onyemata's presence affects the interior front, while the linebacker absences could change how the Jets handle Gibbs and LaPorta.
Detroit's offensive-line availability carries the greatest leverage for the favorite. Any weakness in protection would strengthen the central argument for a Jets upset.
Special-teams personnel also deserves attention after the Jets conceded the return that set up Green Bay's tying field goal.
