Seven months after Seattle ended New England's season, the two teams meet again to begin the next one. The Seahawks' 29-13 championship victory still frames the matchup, but it does not freeze either team in place.
New England returns with Drake Maye and a far more imposing group of receivers. Seattle still has the defense that overwhelmed him, although the runner who carried its offense through the championship game now plays elsewhere. That creates a familiar contest with different pressure points.
Seattle has home advantage and fewer questions about its established identity. New England has spent the offseason trying to answer the questions the Seahawks exposed. Week 1 offers the first meaningful measure of whether those answers are good enough.

New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks prediction
Seattle deserves to begin as the favorite. Mike Macdonald's defense gave up the fewest points in the NFL last season, then closed the year by sacking Maye six times and forcing three turnovers in the championship game.
The Seahawks can pressure with four, disguise coverage behind it and send Devon Witherspoon from the slot when the protection begins to settle.
That does not make February a complete forecast for September. New England traded for A.J. Brown, signed Romeo Doubs and added Alijah Vera-Tucker to the offensive line.
Brown gives Maye a receiver who can win through contact and turn short throws into meaningful gains. Doubs provides another experienced target, while Vera-Tucker should improve the protection if he is fully comfortable after missing last season.
The Patriots therefore have a more convincing route to sustained offense than they did in the previous meeting. Quick throws to Brown and DeMario Douglas can punish soft space, and Maye's mobility can rescue plays when Seattle's rush gets home.
New England cannot afford to live in third-and-long, however. That is where Macdonald can hide the source of pressure and make the young quarterback solve the picture after the snap.
Seattle's own uncertainty is in the backfield. Kenneth Walker III ran for 135 yards in the championship game before leaving in free agency, while Zach Charbonnet will miss the start of the season on the physically unable to perform list.
Rookie Jadarian Price and George Holani are expected to share the early work. If they keep the offense on schedule, Sam Darnold should have enough support to make Seattle's defensive advantage count. If they do not, this could remain tight deep into the second half.

New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks odds
- New England Patriots win: 38%
- Seattle Seahawks win: 63%
The market makes Seattle the favorite without treating a repeat as inevitable. A 63% market-implied probability reflects the Seahawks' home advantage, championship-level defense and decisive win in February; New England's 38% price leaves meaningful room for Maye and the upgraded offense to change the matchup.

New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks game outlook
New England's first job is to make the game look different before the snap. In February, Seattle repeatedly pushed the Patriots into obvious passing situations and then changed the picture for Maye. Even when the Seahawks did not blitz, the threat of Witherspoon or another defensive back entering the rush forced the protection to account for more bodies than it could comfortably handle.
Josh McDaniels now has better answers on the perimeter. Brown can work slants, digs and in-breaking routes that arrive before pressure develops. Doubs can stretch the coverage outside, and Douglas can attack underneath.
The Patriots do not need a stream of deep completions. They need enough efficient early-down gains to keep the full playbook available.
Seattle will try to take that patience away. Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy II and Rylie Mills can compress the pocket inside, while DeMarcus Lawrence, Uchenna Nwosu and Derick Hall provide several edge combinations.
Maye is dangerous when he escapes, but leaving the pocket against this defense also exposes him to pursuit and strips away some of the structure that Brown was added to provide.
The other side of the ball has changed more. Brian Fleury replaced Klint Kubiak as Seattle's offensive coordinator, although his background in the same broad West Coast system should preserve much of the play-action and movement-based approach. Darnold still has Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp and Rashid Shaheed, a group capable of attacking every level.
New England's secondary can make that difficult. Christian Gonzalez was excellent against Smith-Njigba in February, allowing one catch for 16 yards on three targets when covering him.
Kevin Byard has since joined the safety group after leading the league with seven interceptions last season. Seattle may need to manufacture favorable matchups for Smith-Njigba rather than leaving him isolated against Gonzalez.
The unknown is whether the Seahawks can recreate their old run-pass balance. Price was the No. 32 pick in the draft, but this is his first regular-season game. Holani has a limited NFL track record, and Emanuel Wilson was restricted by injury during camp.
Seattle should still use motion, outside-zone concepts and play action, but the Patriots have less reason to fear the rushing game until the new rotation proves it can punish lighter boxes.
That is New England's opening. If Milton Williams and the interior front control early downs, the Patriots can devote more attention to Smith-Njigba and force Darnold to hold the ball.
The problem comes if Seattle moves the chains on the ground. Macdonald's defense can then play with a lead, and Maye once again has to operate against a pass rush that knows what is coming.
Team news and injuries
New England Patriots
Maye is set to start, with Brown, Doubs, Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism forming the initial six-man receiver group. Brown is the headline addition after recording 1,003 receiving yards and seven touchdowns last season. Doubs added a career-high 724 yards and six touchdowns, giving New England two proven outside options it did not have in February.
Running back TreVeyon Henderson is the main unresolved offensive concern. He injured an ankle during the final week of preseason and had not been cleared to return to practice as of September 1. Rhamondre Stevenson is available, while recent trade acquisition Corey Kiner gives the Patriots another option if Henderson cannot play. An absence would reduce New England's speed and receiving threat from the backfield.
Harold Landry III is on the reserve/PUP list following offseason knee surgery and will miss at least the first four games. New England is consequently relying on Dre'Mont Jones, Elijah Ponder and rookies Gabe Jacas and Quintayvious Hutchins on the edge. That is a material concern against Seattle's tackles, particularly if the Patriots cannot create pressure without sending extra rushers.
Seattle Seahawks
Darnold remains the starting quarterback, with Smith-Njigba, Kupp, Shaheed and Tory Horton established as Seattle's leading receivers. The offensive line is expected to begin with Charles Cross, Grey Zabel, Jalen Sundell, Anthony Bradford and Abraham Lucas.
Charbonnet opens the season on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from the ACL injury he suffered late last season. Price and Holani are expected to split the early backfield work, with Wilson also on the roster after a camp interrupted by injury.
Safety Nick Emmanwori is on the active roster after offseason ankle surgery, but Seattle had not confirmed his Week 1 availability when its initial 53-man group was announced. His status matters because the Seahawks currently carry only three safeties on the active roster. If he is limited or unavailable, Seattle may need a practice-squad elevation and could have less flexibility in its three-safety packages.
The first official game-status designations have not yet been issued. Practice participation and the final injury report will provide a clearer picture closer to kickoff.
Key factors that could decide New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks
Can New England keep Maye out of long-yardage situations?
Seattle's pressure was devastating once the Patriots fell behind the chains in February. Maye faced pressure on 52.8% of his dropbacks, while the offense punted on its first eight possessions. New England needs productive first-down runs, quick completions and fewer penalties so Seattle cannot dictate every third down.
The raw sack total tells only part of that story. As our guide to football statistics explains, individual numbers make more sense when tied to the game situation. A second-and-6 incompletion is manageable; the same mistake after a first-down loss hands Seattle's disguised pressure package a major advantage.
Does A.J. Brown change Seattle's coverage plan?
Brown gives Maye a target who does not need to be completely open. That matters against a secondary comfortable playing tight coverage and forcing quarterbacks to hesitate. If Brown wins early against Josh Jobe or draws safety help, the space for Doubs and Douglas should grow.
Seattle can answer by using Witherspoon inside, changing leverage after the snap and trusting its rush to shorten the play. The Patriots need Brown involved without becoming predictable about where the ball is going.
Can Seattle's new backfield replace Walker's explosive runs?
Walker was the offensive difference in the championship game, producing five runs of at least 10 yards and repeatedly reaching the edge. Price has the size and speed to take over part of that role, but New England will want to make the rookie prove he can read the front, protect Darnold and remain efficient across a full game.
If Seattle cannot run, play action loses some force. That would place more responsibility on Darnold against Gonzalez, Byard and a secondary capable of contesting throws.
Where does New England find pressure without Landry?
Landry's absence leaves the Patriots thin on the edge. Jones is coming off a career-high seven-sack season and knows Seattle from his previous time with the team, but Ponder and the rookies have not carried full regular-season workloads.
Darnold is at his best when the offense gives him defined reads and a clean launch point. New England may have to blitz to disturb that rhythm, which creates openings for Kupp underneath or Shaheed behind the coverage.
Can Seattle prevent Maye from turning broken plays into offense?
Maye's movement is one of New England's best counters to pressure. Seattle wants him uncomfortable, but not escaping into open grass. The edge defenders must compress the pocket without losing contain, while the linebackers balance Maye's scrambling threat against Stevenson and Henderson, if the latter is available.
That discipline is especially important on third down. A well-covered play can still become a first down if the rush opens a running lane for the quarterback.
New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks head-to-head
Seattle has won the teams' two most recent meetings. The Seahawks prevailed 23-20 in overtime during the 2024 regular season, then won last season's championship game 29-13.
The February result is the more relevant reference point because both starting quarterbacks and both head coaches return. Seattle's six sacks, three takeaways and control of the line of scrimmage explain why the current market favors the Seahawks.
There are limits to the comparison. Walker, the championship game's most productive offensive player, is no longer with Seattle. Brown, Doubs and Vera-Tucker were not part of the New England offense. The result establishes the tactical questions; it does not answer them in advance.
What could move New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks odds?
Henderson's practice status is the clearest unresolved item for New England. A full return would restore another explosive option for Maye, while a limited week or an absence would concentrate the rushing and receiving workload around Stevenson and a newly assembled depth chart.
Emmanwori's availability could matter on the other side. Seattle's defense is built to disguise personnel and coverage, and a thin safety group would reduce some of Macdonald's freedom. Updates on Wilson and any other limited Seattle running backs could also affect expectations for the home team's new backfield.
The final practice reports, active lists and any late offensive-line changes will carry more weight than preseason scores. The displayed figures represent the market's assessment on September 3 and can change as new information arrives before kickoff.
