Prediction markets give the Hornets a slight edge, but the sporting case turns on Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo against a Charlotte backcourt that may not be whole.
The Miami Heat visit the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, October 24 in the first road game of Miami's season. Charlotte ended Miami's last campaign in the play-in, winning 127-126 in overtime, but neither roster looks like it did then.
Miami added Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP who averaged 15.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists in three preseason games while shooting 73.1% from the field. Charlotte traded LaMelo Ball to Minnesota for Naz Reid and handed the offense to Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel.

Charlotte's case starts with continuity at the top of the roster and home court. The Hornets went 44-38 last season, and coach Charles Lee is in his third year with the team. Miller averaged 20.2 points last season and Knueppel averaged 18.5 as a rookie, so the scoring base is young but proven.
Miami's route runs through size and passing. Antetokounmpo attacked the rim all preseason, making 10 of 12 shots at the rim, and Adebayo gives him a second big who can pass and defend. If both play, the Heat can ask Charlotte's frontcourt to guard two creators at once.
The vulnerability for both sides is ball security and shooting. Charlotte turned the ball over 54 times in its last two preseason games, while Klay Thompson shot 3 of 20 from three in the preseason. Whichever team fixes that first controls the possessions.
Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets odds
Miami Heat win: 54%
Charlotte Hornets win: 63%
The market favors Charlotte, and the Hornets' home game and the injury questions in Miami's frontcourt help explain why. Miami's pricing reflects the upside of a healthy Antetokounmpo and Adebayo pairing.
Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets game outlook
The central action is Antetokounmpo in space. If Charlotte sends a second defender at him in the paint, Adebayo or a shooter is open on the pass; if the Hornets stay home, Antetokounmpo can drive downhill, as he did through most of the preseason. Charlotte's answer is a matter of who is on the floor.
Reid, a recent addition from Minnesota, gives Charlotte a big who can shoot and stay in front of a driver. A possible response is to keep a big near the basket and live with Miami's perimeter shooting, a plan Lee has not announced.
On the other end, Charlotte's offense runs through Miller and whichever guards are healthy. Lee has said the team needs cleaner half-court execution and fewer casual turnovers. Miami's guards, led by Davion Mitchell, can pressure the ball, and every live-ball turnover turns into a transition chance for Antetokounmpo.
Rebounding may decide the margin. Charlotte finished the preseason strong on the defensive glass, according to Lee, but Boston outscored it 56-20 in the paint in one game. Miami's size should test that.
Team news and injuries
Miami Heat
Adebayo missed the last two preseason games with right groin tightness and is considered day-to-day. He is back at practice and says he should be ready for the opener. If he sits, Bobby Portis Jr. takes the center minutes next to Antetokounmpo.
Dru Smith has been out since training camp with a right calf strain, and Pelle Larsson has missed practice time with an illness. Both are day-to-day. Without them, Mitchell and the reserve guards share the ball-handling and Miami leans on Antetokounmpo and Adebayo to start possessions.
Charlotte Hornets
Knueppel has a left hamstring strain and Coby White a left calf strain. Neither played in the preseason, and Lee said neither has a return timeline. Grayson Allen missed three straight games with right knee soreness, and Grant Williams missed the whole preseason with a hamstring injury.
If Knueppel and White are out, Dennis Schröder and the other guards take on more of the playmaking and Miller carries more of the scoring. If either returns, Charlotte regains shooting and a second creator, which changes how Miami can defend Miller.
Expected starting lineups
Miami Heat lineups
Projected starting five:
Davion Mitchell
Klay Thompson
Andrew Wiggins
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Bam Adebayo
This projection assumes Adebayo is available; Portis is the likely alternative at center if he is not. Nikola Jović gives Spoelstra another frontcourt look off the bench.
Charlotte Hornets lineups
Projected starting five:
Dennis Schröder
Royce O'Neale
Brandon Miller
Naz Reid
Moussa Diabaté
This follows the starting group from the preseason finale and assumes the injured guards are not ready. If Allen is healthy, he is a natural fit at shooting guard, and Sion James is a wing option. Knueppel or White would take a backcourt spot if cleared.
Key factors that could decide the Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets game
Can Charlotte guard Antetokounmpo without losing shooters?
Sending help at Antetokounmpo opens the floor for Thompson, Wiggins and Mitchell. The Hornets need their help defenders to recover quickly, and their rebounding and defensive positioning have to hold up when they do.
Can Charlotte protect the ball?
A cleaner Charlotte offense changes the game. If Lee's group holds onto the ball, its shooting becomes a real problem for Miami's defense; if not, Miami's guards run.
Who creates when the stars rest?
Miami's bench guards and Charlotte's thin backcourt will both be tested in minutes without their top creators. The team that holds its lead in those stretches will have the advantage.
What could move Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets win probabilities?
Adebayo's status and Antetokounmpo's workload after Miami's opener are the biggest variables for the Heat. For Charlotte, the injury updates on Knueppel and White, plus whether Allen returns, would change its backcourt.
The starting lineups announced before tip-off will show which version of each team plays.
