Los Angeles Rams vs San Francisco 49ers prediction

Two familiar division rivals will begin the new season a long way from home. The Rams and 49ers meet in Melbourne after both reached the playoffs last year, but they arrive with very different questions.

Los Angeles has retained the offense that led the NFL in scoring in 2025 and added extraordinary defensive star power. San Francisco has reunited Deebo Samuel Sr. and Dre Greenlaw with a veteran core that still includes Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Fred Warner and Nick Bosa. Several of those players, however, have spent the run-up to Week 1 managing injuries or workloads.

The setting adds another variable. As our guide to the 2026 international football games explains, this is the first regular-season NFL game in Australia and one of two overseas trips on San Francisco's schedule.

  • Date: Thursday, September 10, 2026
  • Kickoff: 8:35 p.m. ET / 5:35 p.m. PT
  • Competition: NFL
  • Location: Melbourne, Australia
  • Los Angeles Rams win: 66%
  • San Francisco 49ers win: 35%

The Rams are the designated home team, but the game is being played at a neutral site in Melbourne. Neither side will have its usual home-field setting.

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams prediction

The Rams deserve to begin as favorites at 66%. Matthew Stafford is coming off the finest statistical season of his career, while Sean McVay returns the core of an offense that finished first in scoring and total offense. Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Kyren Williams and Blake Corum give Stafford answers at every level.

The 49ers' route, at 35%, is built around McCaffrey and the conflict he creates before and after the snap.

If San Francisco can make Los Angeles defend the full width of the field and keep Purdy out of obvious passing situations, Kyle Shanahan can stop the Rams' pass rush from simply attacking downhill. Warner and Greenlaw also have the speed to cope with Los Angeles' multiple-tight-end formations.

Los Angeles' advantage becomes less secure if its new defensive front is not ready to play a normal workload. Myles Garrett has been working back from lower-body soreness, and Aaron Donald's availability remains a day-to-day decision following his return to the team.

The Rams still have Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske and Byron Young, but the difference between having Garrett and Donald for meaningful snaps and merely having them on the roster is substantial.

Even with that uncertainty, the Rams have the more settled offense and the stronger recent high-end performance. San Francisco has enough talent to make the game uncomfortable, particularly if Bosa and Kittle return at close to full strength, but the current market hierarchy is supported by the football evidence.

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams odds

  • Los Angeles Rams win: 66%
  • San Francisco 49ers win: 35%

The market sees Los Angeles as a meaningful favorite rather than treating this as a near-even division game. That reflects the Rams' offensive continuity and San Francisco's unsettled injury picture, although the gap could narrow if the 49ers receive positive news on Bosa, Kittle and Mike Evans. For readers unfamiliar with the format, our guide explains how football prediction markets work and how contract prices relate to market-implied probabilities.

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams game outlook

Los Angeles found a second offensive identity last season by leaning heavily on three-tight-end personnel. The Rams could run from heavier formations, create favorable coverage looks for Nacua and Adams and make defenses declare how they intended to handle the extra gaps.

San Francisco is better equipped than most teams to answer that approach at linebacker. Warner can match routes underneath without abandoning the run fit, while Greenlaw brings speed when healthy.

The harder choice comes outside. If the 49ers compress toward the formation, Stafford can isolate Nacua or Adams against a secondary that will begin the season without injured cornerback Nate Hobbs.

The Rams' protection will be tested most severely when Bosa is aligned away from Alaric Jackson. Stafford was sacked on only 3.71% of his dropbacks last season, his lowest rate in six years with Los Angeles. San Francisco needs Bosa to disturb that timing, but his workload has been managed as he returns from the torn ACL that ended his 2025 season.

When the 49ers have the ball, the matchup turns inside. San Francisco has not settled its left-guard competition, while Los Angeles could place Garrett, Donald, Turner and Fiske across the same front. Shanahan will not want Purdy taking repeated straight dropbacks against that group.

Expect McCaffrey to be used as both a runner and an early outlet, with motion, screens and play action intended to slow the rush. Evans would give Purdy a large target outside, while Kittle can threaten the seam and prevent the Rams from treating every heavy formation as a run alert. Both players' readiness remains important.

The neutral setting should discourage assumptions about a normal division home game. Both teams have had to adjust training, travel and recovery plans. The side that finds its tempo first may gain more than it usually would from the opening two possessions.

Team news and injuries

San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy is the confirmed starting quarterback. The uncertainty sits around several of the players who make Shanahan's offense and defense difficult to prepare for.

Bosa and Kittle were expected to increase their practice involvement before the trip. Both are being prepared for Week 1, but their progress still needs to be checked against the official injury report.

Evans is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a groin strain but had not returned to full practice in the latest team update. With Ricky Pearsall and Christian Kirk on injured reserve, the 49ers may need more from Samuel and second-round rookie De'Zhaun Stribling.

Safety Malik Mustapha is working back from a hamstring injury, and Greenlaw is available on a managed schedule. Defensive lineman Mykel Williams and running back Isaac Guerendo will miss at least four games on the reserve/PUP list.

San Francisco's left-guard job remains open, with Carver Willis, Connor Colby and newly added Jarrett Patterson among the options. Shanahan has also described the backup role behind McCaffrey as fluid, with Jordan James and rookie Kaelon Black competing for touches.

Los Angeles Rams

Matthew Stafford is the confirmed starting quarterback. His practice schedule has been managed through the summer, but there is no current indication that his Week 1 status is in doubt.

Garrett is expected to be a central part of the defense, although he had not returned to individual or team drills in the Rams' latest update. McVay said the goal remained to have him available in Australia.

Donald is less certain. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year has returned after two seasons away, but McVay has not committed to playing him in Week 1.

Tight end Terrance Ferguson and linebacker Grant Stuard were held out of the latest practice because of soreness, with the team describing the decision as precautionary. Offensive linemen Keagen Trost and Justin Dedich are on injured reserve, but the expected starting line of Alaric Jackson, Steve Avila, Coleman Shelton, Kevin Dotson and Warren McClendon Jr. remains intact.

Key factors that could decide San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams

Can San Francisco disrupt Stafford's timing?

Stafford was rarely forced off schedule in 2025. The Rams protected him well, used play action effectively and gave him two receivers capable of winning early in the down.

San Francisco needs Bosa or its interior group to create pressure without committing extra rushers, because frequent blitzing would leave Nacua and Adams with favorable space behind it.

Can McCaffrey keep the Rams' pass rush honest?

McCaffrey remains the cleanest way to prevent Los Angeles from controlling the game with its front. Outside-zone runs can force the edge defenders to move laterally, while screens and option routes punish them for attacking too aggressively. If he creates efficient gains on early downs, Purdy can operate from the part of Shanahan's playbook that stresses eye discipline rather than asking him to beat a loaded rush.

What does Los Angeles get from Garrett and Donald?

Garrett set the NFL single-season record with 23 sacks in 2025, but he has lost practice time this summer.

Donald's two years away and short ramp-up make his immediate role impossible to assume. Even a limited contribution from either could alter the game; expecting both to handle full workloads would be premature.

Which rebuilt secondary settles first?

The Rams have added Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson to a cornerback group that retained Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Josh Wallace. San Francisco has also changed its receiver and cornerback rooms.

That creates uncertainty on both sides: Purdy must establish timing with Evans, Samuel and Stribling, while Stafford will test how quickly the 49ers' defensive backs can pass routes through coverage against a highly coordinated passing game.

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams head-to-head

The teams split their two regular-season meetings in 2025, with the road team winning each game.

San Francisco won 26-23 in overtime in Week 5. Mac Jones started in place of Purdy, McCaffrey contributed as both a runner and receiver, and the 49ers stopped Williams on fourth-and-one to end the game.

The Rams responded with a 42-26 win in Week 10. Stafford threw four touchdown passes, Los Angeles scored on each of the turnovers it created and the offense repeatedly punished San Francisco for falling behind the down-and-distance schedule.

Those games show the range of this matchup without settling the 2026 question. San Francisco proved it could slow the game and win through situational football, while Los Angeles showed what happens when Stafford is protected and given short fields. Both defenses have changed substantially since then.

What could move San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams odds before kickoff?

The next injury updates should have more influence than any remaining preseason result. Garrett's return to full practice and a firm decision on Donald would strengthen the case for Los Angeles. A full week for Bosa and Kittle would improve San Francisco's outlook, while Evans' availability would determine how much proven size the 49ers can place outside.

The official Week 1 injury reports will also clarify Mustapha's status, the Rams' tight-end depth and any restrictions that appear after the teams complete their long-haul travel. San Francisco's decision at left guard may matter less to the headline price, but it is directly relevant to how the 49ers intend to handle Los Angeles' interior rush.
