Sam Darnold returned from a glute injury and immediately reminded Seattle what its offense can be. He threw for a career-high 379 yards and four touchdowns against Washington, but two second-half interceptions helped turn an explosive performance into a 33-31 loss.
The Los Angeles Chargers have been living on the other side of that equation. Their defense forced five Buffalo turnovers in Week 3, yet the offense managed only two second-half field goals and the Chargers fell to 0-3.
Seattle has the clearer identity and home-field advantage. Los Angeles still has Justin Herbert, which is why the Seahawks cannot treat a struggling offense as a harmless one.

Seattle's advantage begins with a functioning passing game. Darnold pushed the ball to every level against Washington, Jaxon Smith-Njigba remains the primary separator and Cooper Kupp gives the quarterback a reliable answer when the initial structure breaks down.
The Chargers have not found the same rhythm in Mike McDaniel's offense. Penalties, protection changes and turnovers have repeatedly left Herbert operating from difficult down-and-distance situations. Five takeaways in Buffalo should have created a winning platform. They did not.
Los Angeles still has a route into the game. Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu and Derwin James Jr. can disrupt Seattle before its route combinations develop, while Herbert can attack a safety group carrying injuries. If the Chargers turn pressure into short fields again, their 26% price will not look unreasonable.
The difference is that Seattle has shown it can score even after a mistake. The Chargers have not yet shown that they can finish drives often enough to keep pace.
Los Angeles Chargers vs Seattle Seahawks odds
Los Angeles Chargers win: 26%
Seattle Seahawks win: 75%
The market is pricing form as much as reputation. Seattle is 2-1 and just produced 437 yards in defeat, while the Chargers have lost three games and scored 46 points across them.
Both teams entered the season with serious expectations in difficult western divisions. The NFC West outlook and AFC West preview show how quickly an early result can alter those races.
Los Angeles Chargers vs Seattle Seahawks game outlook
Seattle should make the Chargers defend horizontally before attacking downfield. Darnold can work Smith-Njigba and Kupp through motion, condensed splits and in-breaking routes, with AJ Barner available underneath when the linebackers widen.
That stresses a Los Angeles defense already missing bodies. Mack and Tuipulotu can win outside, but a pass rush becomes less effective if Darnold releases the ball before the edge closes. The Chargers need tighter coverage on the first read or pressure will arrive too late.
Herbert's matchup is more complicated. Seattle can rush with four, spin the safeties late and ask its corners to challenge releases. The Chargers can answer with Ladd McConkey inside, Quentin Johnston vertically and Oronde Gadsden II against linebackers, but the offensive line has to give those routes time.
That is not a small condition. Trey Pipkins III is on injured reserve, Kayode Awosika missed Week 3 and the tight-end room has also been reduced. Seattle will look for ways to isolate the rebuilt interior and force Herbert to speed up without sending an obvious blitz.
The Chargers should also test Seattle's safety depth. Julian Love and Ty Okada missed the Washington game, and the Commanders found coverage errors behind the first level. Herbert has the arm to punish those mistakes. He first has to avoid the negative plays that have kept his offense behind schedule.
Team news and injuries
Los Angeles Chargers
Herbert remains the confirmed starter, but the group protecting him has changed. Pipkins was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury before Week 3, while Awosika was ruled out with a fibula problem. Trevor Penning moved into the left-guard picture, and the Chargers also had to account for limited depth across the line.
The tight-end rotation is thinner too. David Njoku is on injured reserve and Charlie Kolar missed Buffalo after forearm surgery, leaving Gadsden with a larger role as both a receiver and blocker.
Elijah Molden and Dalvin Tomlinson were also out in Week 3 with hamstring injuries. By contrast, James, Mack, McConkey, Rashawn Slater and Tuipulotu came off the final report without game-status designations.
Seattle Seahawks
Darnold was a full participant late last week and played the entire Washington game, removing the immediate uncertainty around his glute injury. His 31-of-45, 379-yard performance was productive; the two interceptions were the issue.
Love missed Week 3 with a calf injury and was described by Mike Macdonald as day-to-day on Monday. Okada was also unavailable with a hamstring problem, forcing Seattle to use Rodney Thomas II and AJ Finley in a depleted safety rotation.
Love's return would matter against Herbert's arm strength and McDaniel's use of motion. If he remains out, the Seahawks may have to protect the middle and deep seams with more conservative coverage than Macdonald would normally prefer.
Key factors that could decide Los Angeles Chargers vs Seattle Seahawks
Can the Chargers protect Herbert inside?
Seattle does not need to advertise where pressure is coming from. Protection changes at guard and tight end create communication tests, especially when linebackers threaten the line before dropping into coverage.
Does Darnold protect the ball?
Four touchdown passes showed the upside. Two interceptions showed the danger. Los Angeles forced five turnovers in Buffalo, so Seattle cannot assume offensive volume will erase every mistake again.
Who controls the middle of the field?
McConkey and Gadsden can test Seattle's linebackers and replacement safeties. Smith-Njigba, Kupp and Barner can create the same conflict for the Chargers. Whichever defense tackles cleanly after short completions can prevent routine throws from becoming explosive gains.
Can Los Angeles finish the drives its defense creates?
The Chargers repeatedly received extra opportunities against Buffalo and converted too few of them into touchdowns. Seattle is capable of scoring quickly, so field goals and empty possessions will make an upset route increasingly narrow.
What could move Los Angeles Chargers vs Seattle Seahawks odds?
Love's calf injury is the clearest Seattle variable because it affects communication and range at the back of the defense. Any change involving Okada would matter for the same reason.
For the Chargers, the Week 4 status of Awosika, Tomlinson, Molden and Kolar could reshape both lines of scrimmage and the tight-end rotation. The fixed absence of Pipkins already limits the available protection combinations around Herbert.
