Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs prediction and odds
Kansas City is a clear 73% favorite in prediction markets, with Indianapolis at 27% after the teams opened Week 1 in opposite fashion. The Chiefs' new run game and attacking defense support that gap, but the Colts have Jonathan Taylor and an extra day of rest to keep the rematch competitive.

Indianapolis heads into Week 2 looking for a response after Baltimore exposed problems on both sides of the ball, while Kansas City comes off a 31-10 opening win over Denver. The biggest matchup question is immediate: can a Colts defense that struggled with run fits and communication slow Kenneth Walker III enough to keep Patrick Mahomes out of favorable down-and-distance situations?

Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs prediction
Kansas City's 73% market position is supported by a Week 1 performance that looked much more complete than Indianapolis' opener. The Chiefs outgained Denver 392-176, held the Broncos to 2-of-12 on third down and generated four sacks and two takeaways in a 31-10 win.
The most uncomfortable matchup for Indianapolis may be on the ground. Walker produced 173 rushing yards on 23 carries and 191 yards from scrimmage in his Chiefs debut, including a 60-yard touchdown. Indianapolis has just allowed Baltimore to pile up 506 total yards, with Derrick Henry rushing for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
That does not automatically make Week 1 a stable trend, but the mechanism matters. Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo identified alignment and communication problems after the loss, with Indianapolis at times slow to get set against Baltimore's changing tempo. Andy Reid and Mahomes are well equipped to punish the same issue through formation shifts, motion and quick changes in pace.
Indianapolis' best route to keeping the game compressed is Jonathan Taylor. He rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns against Baltimore and remains the part of the Colts offense most capable of keeping Steve Spagnuolo's defense out of obvious passing situations. A Taylor-led game also shortens possessions and reduces the number of opportunities Mahomes receives.
Daniel Jones will need more support around that run game. In his first regular-season appearance since tearing his Achilles in December, Jones completed 19 of 31 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Indianapolis managed only 251 total yards, and its two turnovers helped a competitive opening stretch turn into a three-score defeat.
Kansas City therefore has the stronger current case on both sides of the ball, but there are reasons the underdog can make the matchup less straightforward. The Chiefs are working on a six-day turnaround after playing Monday night, Indianapolis has a recent example of pushing this opponent into overtime, and Kansas City enters the week with several personnel questions following its opener.
Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs prediction-market odds
- Kansas City Chiefs win - 73%
- Indianapolis Colts win - 27%

Market data as of September 16, 2026.
The market gives Kansas City a substantial edge after the Chiefs paired an efficient running game with a dominant defensive opener. Indianapolis' clearest counter is to lean on Taylor, improve its early-down defense and avoid letting Kansas City dictate the game through third-and-long situations and short fields.
Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs game outlook
Kansas City's Week 1 offense did not require Mahomes to produce huge passing numbers. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, added a rushing touchdown and benefited from Walker consistently creating favorable situations on early downs.
That balance is especially important against Indianapolis. If Walker forces the Colts to commit extra resources to the box, Mahomes can work against a secondary that struggled to get aligned against Baltimore. Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy give Kansas City different ways to attack space, while Travis Kelce remains an option in the middle of the field when Indianapolis tries to disguise pressure or coverage.
The Colts need a much cleaner first half than they produced in Week 1. Their opening touchdown drive against Baltimore showed what the offense can look like when Taylor keeps the playbook open, but turnovers, poor field position and stalled possessions quickly changed the game. Jones is far more comfortable if Indianapolis can use play action and manageable third downs rather than asking him to solve Spagnuolo's pressure packages repeatedly.
Kansas City's defense has already shown how punishing that game state can become. Denver generated only 176 yards and converted two third downs in the opener. Once the Chiefs can attack protections rather than defend the full playbook, their front and secondary can become far more aggressive.
The game therefore looks very different depending on the first two downs. Indianapolis wants Taylor to create a slow, possession-driven contest and keep Mahomes watching from the sideline. Kansas City wants to win early downs, force Jones into obvious passing situations and let the combination of pressure and field position widen the gap.
Team news and injuries
Indianapolis Colts
Daniel Jones remains the starting quarterback after completing his comeback from the Achilles injury that ended his 2025 season. Week 1 was his first game action in 280 days, and the Colts will be looking for a cleaner passing performance after the offense produced 251 total yards against Baltimore.
Taylor came through the opener as Indianapolis' most productive offensive player, rushing for 98 yards and two scores. Alec Pierce was active after entering Week 1 with a heel issue and led the Colts with four catches for 61 yards.
The secondary gets another option this week with Cam Taylor-Britt reinstated following his one-game suspension. He is listed behind Charvarius Ward on the Colts' unofficial Week 2 depth chart and gives Anarumo an experienced corner who can play outside or inside after Indianapolis' communication problems against Baltimore.
Kansas City Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes played through no apparent limitation in Week 1 after being a full participant throughout the final practice report with a knee issue. The more significant offensive development was Walker's debut, which immediately gave Kansas City a rushing threat capable of changing how defenses structure the box.
Starting left tackle Josh Simmons missed the opener with a back injury, and defensive back Chamarri Conner was also ruled out with a knee injury. Their Week 2 availability remains important, particularly because Indianapolis has edge rusher Laiatu Latu and Kansas City's protection could face a more difficult test if it again has to adjust at left tackle.
Rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane intercepted Bo Nix on Denver's opening possession but later left with a shoulder injury. Linebacker Cooper McDonald also exited with a knee injury. Chris Jones played in the opener after a calf issue limited him late in the practice week.
Key factors that could decide Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs
Can Indianapolis fix its run fits against Kenneth Walker III?
This is the first test because Kansas City may not need Mahomes to dominate if Walker reproduces anything close to his Week 1 efficiency. Indianapolis allowed Baltimore to rush for 246 yards, including 144 from Henry, and struggled to get aligned quickly enough on several snaps. Better communication and edge discipline are essential before the Colts can worry about Kansas City's passing concepts.
Can Jonathan Taylor keep Daniel Jones out of third-and-long?
Spagnuolo's defense becomes much more difficult to diagnose when the Chiefs know the opponent has to pass. Taylor gives Indianapolis its best answer by keeping second and third downs manageable. If the Colts fall behind the sticks and Jones has to operate in a high-volume dropback game, Kansas City's four-sack Week 1 performance becomes much more relevant.
Can Laiatu Latu stress Kansas City's left tackle situation?
Latu remains Indianapolis' most dangerous edge defender and already made a major play against Mahomes in last season's meeting, intercepting a tipped pass. If Simmons cannot return at left tackle, the Colts have a specific matchup they can attack. Pressure without heavy blitzing would also allow Anarumo to devote more bodies to Kansas City's receivers and underneath passing game.
Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs head-to-head
These teams met in Kansas City last November, with the Chiefs winning 23-20 in overtime after Indianapolis carried a 20-9 lead into the fourth quarter. The Colts' defense intercepted Mahomes, forced a red-zone fumble and repeatedly held Kansas City to field goals before the game turned late.
The decisive issue was Indianapolis' inability to sustain offense. The Colts went three-and-out on four consecutive possessions spanning the fourth quarter and overtime, giving Mahomes enough opportunities to erase the deficit and set up the winning field goal.
There has been meaningful roster turnover since then, particularly around Kansas City's running game and Indianapolis' defense, so the 2025 result is not a direct blueprint. The useful carryover is structural: Jones, Taylor and Latu were central for Indianapolis, while Mahomes, Reid and Spagnuolo remain central to how Kansas City plays. The Colts have already shown they can keep this matchup close, but also how difficult it is to protect a lead when the offense stops generating first downs.
What could move Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs odds before kickoff?
Kansas City's offensive-line status is one of the biggest variables. Simmons missed Week 1 with a back injury, and any continued limitation at left tackle would increase the importance of Latu and Indianapolis' pass rush.
The Chiefs' secondary is another area to watch after Delane left the opener with a shoulder injury and Conner missed the game with a knee issue. Their availability affects how aggressively Spagnuolo can mix coverage and pressure against Jones.
For Indianapolis, any late change involving Taylor, the offensive line or its starting secondary would be especially significant. The Colts' most credible route depends on running efficiently, protecting Jones and communicating far better on defense than they did against Baltimore.
