Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings prediction
Minnesota's narrow favorite status is defensible, but this is much closer to a toss-up than a mismatch. Murray gives Kevin O'Connell an experienced starting quarterback with a different movement profile from J.J. McCarthy, and he arrives with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jauan Jennings and T.J. Hockenson around him. Minnesota also enters the season with Christian Darrisaw expected to be fully available after an injury-disrupted 2025, helping stabilize an offensive line that cycled through 26 combinations last year.
Green Bay's strongest response is Love. He completed 66.3% of his passes for 3,381 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2025, finishing with a career-high 101.2 passer rating. More importantly for this matchup, he posted a 109.5 rating against the blitz. Brian Flores has built Minnesota around disguise, pressure and forcing quarterbacks to process quickly, so Love's ability to identify and punish those looks gives the Packers a credible route to winning on the road.
The bigger concern for Green Bay is what happens around Love. Jacobs cannot practice or attend games while he remains on the exempt list, leaving MarShawn Lloyd in line for a much larger role after recording only six carries and one reception across his first two NFL seasons. The Packers traded for Kaleb Johnson to add depth, but that backfield is far less proven than the one they expected to take into Week 1.
Parsons' absence matters just as much on the other side of the ball. Green Bay overwhelmed Minnesota 23-6 in their first 2025 meeting, sacking McCarthy five times, with Parsons collecting two of those sacks. He will miss at least the first four games while on PUP. New defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon knows Murray well from their time together in Arizona, but familiarity does not replace Green Bay's best edge rusher.
That combination makes Minnesota a reasonable slight favorite rather than a clear one. The Vikings have the healthier starting offensive structure and home-field advantage, while Green Bay has the more established quarterback continuity and a passer well suited to attacking pressure. The game is likely to turn on whether Minnesota can make the Packers' weakened run game and reshaped offensive line uncomfortable before Love can exploit Flores' aggressiveness.
Green Bay Packers vs Minnesota Vikings prediction-market odds
- Minnesota Vikings win - 53%
- Green Bay Packers win - 47%

Market data as of September 4, 2026.
The six-point gap reflects a near toss-up with Minnesota holding the slight edge. Murray's arrival, a healthier offensive line and Green Bay's confirmed absence of Parsons support the Vikings' position, while Love's efficiency and experience against pressure keep the Packers firmly within range.
Green Bay Packers vs Minnesota Vikings game outlook
Minnesota has good reason to make this a balanced game rather than asking Murray to carry the offense immediately. Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason give the Vikings two experienced running backs, and a healthier offensive line should make it easier to stay out of obvious passing situations. That matters against a Green Bay defense installing Gannon's new system, which has emphasized flexible safety usage and a 3-4 base structure.
Murray also changes how Green Bay has to defend the edges. He rushed for 173 yards in only five games for Arizona in 2025, and his ability to escape or turn designed movement into positive yards can punish a pass rush that loses contain. Without Parsons, Green Bay may need more production from its remaining edge group and from interior veteran Javon Hargrave to prevent Murray from extending plays for Jefferson and Minnesota's deep receiving group.
Green Bay's preferred script is to keep Love out of long-yardage situations. Matt LaFleur can still use motion, play action and a receiving group led by Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden, while Tucker Kraft has worked back from his ACL injury and has said he does not expect a Week 1 snap restriction. But the uncertainty at running back makes early-down efficiency more important. If Lloyd and the replacement backfield cannot keep Minnesota honest, Flores can lean harder into simulated pressure and late rotation.
A close game favors both teams' strongest traits. Minnesota can keep its full offensive menu available for Murray, while Green Bay can let Love attack selectively rather than chase the score. If either side creates an early two-score gap, the matchup changes: Minnesota's pressure packages become more dangerous against a pass-heavy Packers offense, while Green Bay's ball-hawking safeties get more opportunities to disguise coverage against a quarterback making his first regular-season start in O'Connell's system.
Team news and injuries
Green Bay Packers
Jacobs is currently on the Commissioner's Exempt List and is not permitted to practice or attend games while that designation remains in place. That has pushed Lloyd toward the feature role, with Chris Brooks and newly acquired Kaleb Johnson providing depth. Lloyd is healthy after two injury-hit seasons, but his NFL workload remains extremely limited.
Parsons, defensive lineman Jordon Riley and tight end Luke Musgrave remain on PUP and will miss at least the first four games. Green Bay does have Kraft back after his 2025 ACL tear; he returned to team work during camp and took full-contact reps in the Packers' late-August joint practice.
The offensive line is another area to watch. Jordan Morgan is expected to take over at left tackle, Sean Rhyan has moved to center and Zach Bako-Bewele is back at right tackle after offseason knee surgery. Aaron Banks dealt with a knee issue during camp, while Jacob Monk and rookie Jager Burton took substantial first-team guard reps. The exact five matters against a defense that creates protection stress before the snap.
Minnesota Vikings
O'Connell named Murray the starting quarterback on August 11 after a camp competition with McCarthy. Murray played only five games for Arizona in 2025, completing 68.3% of his passes for 962 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions, but he brings 87 career starts and a significant rushing dimension to Minnesota's offense.
McCarthy was held out of the preseason finale with an ankle injury, but Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley said on September 2 that he had practiced fully for the previous two days. He enters Week 1 as the developing backup rather than the starter, with Carson Wentz also on the roster.
Minnesota's initial starting offensive-line structure has Darrisaw at left tackle, Donovan Jackson at left guard, Blake Brandel at center, Will Fries at right guard and Brian O'Neill at right tackle. Darrisaw had a healthy offseason and entered camp without physical limitations. On defense, Flores still has Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner off the edge, but the front is younger after offseason turnover, placing more responsibility on scheme and pressure design.
Key factors that could decide Green Bay Packers vs Minnesota Vikings
Can Jordan Love punish Brian Flores' pressure looks?
This is the cleanest strength-on-strength matchup. Minnesota has consistently used pressure and disguise under Flores, but Love was one of the NFL's most productive quarterbacks against the blitz in 2025, throwing 13 touchdowns with three interceptions in those situations. If he identifies pressure early and gets the ball to his receivers or Kraft before Minnesota's rush arrives, the Vikings may have to win with four more often than they would prefer.
Can Jonathan Gannon disrupt Kyler Murray without Micah Parsons?
Gannon coached Murray in Arizona from 2023 through 2025, so Green Bay's coordinator has unusually detailed knowledge of the quarterback's habits and movement. Murray has the same familiarity with Gannon's preferences, however, and the Packers' defense is not simply a copy of the system he ran in Arizona. Without Parsons, Green Bay must show it can create enough pressure from the rest of its front to make that schematic familiarity matter.
Can Green Bay stay balanced without Josh Jacobs?
Lloyd's opportunity is substantial, but so is the uncertainty. Minnesota has allowed only 3.9 yards per rush across Flores' first three seasons as defensive coordinator, and a stalled Green Bay run game would expose Love and a reworked line to more third-and-long pressure situations. The Packers do not need to replicate Jacobs' workload exactly; they do need enough rushing efficiency to stop Minnesota from dictating the down.
Green Bay Packers vs Minnesota Vikings head-to-head
The teams split their 2025 meetings, but neither result transfers cleanly into this opener. Green Bay won 23-6 in Week 12 after sacking McCarthy five times and intercepting him twice, with Parsons producing two sacks. Minnesota then won 16-3 in Week 18, but Green Bay rested many starters and used mostly backups with its playoff place already secured.
The 2026 quarterback and defensive context is different enough to limit the predictive value of both games. Murray replaces McCarthy as Minnesota's starter, Parsons is unavailable for Green Bay, and Gannon has replaced Jeff Hafley as Packers defensive coordinator.
What could move Green Bay Packers vs Minnesota Vikings odds before kickoff?
Jacobs' status is the clearest live variable. If he remains on the exempt list, Green Bay is preparing to lean on Lloyd, Brooks and Johnson; any change in that designation would materially alter the Packers' backfield and early-down offense.
Green Bay's final offensive-line configuration is another important variable, particularly the guard spots and the health of Banks and Bako-Bewele. Minnesota's starting five currently looks more settled, while McCarthy's return to full practice has reduced concern over the Vikings' immediate backup-quarterback depth. The first official Week 1 practice reports and any late roster moves will sharpen the personnel picture on both sides.
