Oklahoma City is the narrow championship favorite at 22%, with San Antonio close behind at 21% after winning their playoff showdown. Philadelphia's rebuilt roster sits at 10%, ahead of defending champion New York at 9%, setting up a crowded race for the 2027 NBA title.

The Oklahoma City Thunder enter the 2026-27 NBA season as the narrow championship favorite, but the strongest challenge comes from the team that ended their last playoff run. Oklahoma City stands at 22% in the prediction market, just ahead of the San Antonio Spurs at 21%.
That one-point separation captures the central question in the title race. Can Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder regain control of the Western Conference, or will Victor Wembanyama take San Antonio one step beyond its 2026 Finals appearance?
The East offers a different argument. The Philadelphia 76ers have added LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to a roster featuring Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, pushing their championship probability to 10%. The New York Knicks, who actually won the last championship, follow at 9% with their starting lineup intact.
Oklahoma City gets the early prediction, narrowly. Its combination of elite individual scoring and established team defense provides the strongest foundation, although a thinner supporting cast makes the favorite more vulnerable than its familiar core might suggest.

2027 NBA championship odds
The top four championship contenders are:
- Oklahoma City Thunder: 22%
- San Antonio Spurs: 21%
- Philadelphia 76ers: 10%
- New York Knicks: 9%

Market data as of September 21, 2026.
These are market-implied probabilities of winning the NBA championship. Oklahoma City has the highest individual probability, but 22% still describes an open race with considerable uncertainty.
The gap between second and third is more pronounced than the difference between the two leaders. San Antonio is 11 percentage points ahead of Philadelphia, while the Thunder lead the Spurs by only one. The market therefore draws a clearer distinction between the leading Western teams and the leading Eastern teams than it does within either pair.
Championship odds for other listed teams
Team | Championship probability |
|---|---|
Boston Celtics | 5% |
Minnesota Timberwolves | 5% |
Miami Heat | 4% |
Toronto Raptors | 3% |
Denver Nuggets | 3% |
Cleveland Cavaliers | 3% |
Golden State Warriors | 2% |
Houston Rockets | 2% |
Detroit Pistons | 2% |
Indiana Pacers | 2% |
Los Angeles Lakers | 2% |
Boston and Minnesota lead this next group, each four percentage points behind New York. The spread of teams below them also matters: neither conference offers a straightforward route through three playoff rounds before the Finals.
Oklahoma City Thunder championship outlook — 22%
Oklahoma City's case starts with a level of regular-season performance that few opponents can match. The Thunder finished 64-18 in 2025-26, and Gilgeous-Alexander won his second consecutive MVP award after averaging 31.1 points and 6.6 assists.
Their defense was just as significant. Oklahoma City allowed 107.7 points per 100 possessions, the league's best defensive rating. That gives the Thunder a way to survive nights when their perimeter shots are not falling: make opponents work for their initial advantage, protect the basket and avoid turning every game into a shooting contest.
Gilgeous-Alexander remains the offensive anchor. His ability to create a shot against a set defense is especially important late in playoff games, when transition opportunities disappear. Chet Holmgren supplies a different threat with his shooting and finishing, while Isaiah Hartenstein gives coach Mark Daigneault another frontcourt option for screening, rebounding and defending larger lineups.
The supporting cast has changed, however. Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins were traded during the offseason. Oklahoma City retained its central pieces, but those departures remove established perimeter defense, shooting and rotation flexibility. Cason Wallace and Ajay Mitchell now have a greater opportunity—and greater responsibility—to sustain the team's standards.
Jalen Williams is the most important individual variable. Injuries limited him to 33 regular-season appearances last season and disrupted his postseason. His value goes beyond his scoring average: a second player who can attack the paint prevents a defense from loading all its attention onto Gilgeous-Alexander.
That becomes particularly important against San Antonio. Wembanyama can discourage the first drive and still recover toward the rim. Oklahoma City needs enough shooting and secondary creation to make him defend multiple actions within the same possession.
The Thunder lost their conference finals series in seven games. Better availability and improvement from younger guards provide a credible route to reversing that result. The vulnerability is that there are now fewer proven alternatives if Williams misses time or a perimeter player struggles. Their 22% position rests on maintaining an elite defensive identity while getting more reliable offense from the players around Gilgeous-Alexander.
San Antonio Spurs championship outlook — 21%
San Antonio's position is supported by a completed playoff run. The Spurs won 62 regular-season games, eliminated Oklahoma City and reached the Finals before losing to New York in five games.
Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks during the regular season. His defensive influence changes the choices available to opposing ball handlers: a route to the basket that looks open against another center can become a contested finish or a hurried pass against him.
On offense, his reach creates opportunities above the defense. The challenge is consistently getting him the ball in useful positions while keeping enough shooting around him to punish help. San Antonio has several guards capable of creating that first opening, but fitting them together is one of coach Mitch Johnson's most consequential decisions.
De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper give the Spurs multiple ways to initiate offense. Harper's postseason emergence adds competition for important minutes. Their overlapping strengths also create a lineup question: how much perimeter shooting can San Antonio put around its drivers without sacrificing their ability to attack?
Tobias Harris is the notable offseason addition. His size and scoring give Johnson another forward who can contribute without having every possession designed for him. He also offers an alternative when a smaller lineup struggles to rebound or when the offense needs a shot late in the clock.
The Finals exposed the cost of failing to finish games. New York erased double-digit deficits in each of its four wins. San Antonio does not need to reinvent the team that reached that stage, but it does need more dependable possessions when opponents take away the initial action.
The Spurs have a plausible route past Oklahoma City because Wembanyama can affect a series at both ends and their young guards still have room to improve. The remaining test is whether the offense becomes as dependable against a prepared playoff defense as the rim protection already is. At 21%, San Antonio is close enough to the favorite that a clear improvement in that area could change the hierarchy.
Philadelphia 76ers championship outlook — 10%
Philadelphia has changed the most among the leading four contenders. James and Brown join Embiid, Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, giving the Sixers several players capable of taking over a possession.
That should make them harder to defend when the first option is unavailable. James can organize an attack, Maxey can push the pace, Brown can pressure a defender off the dribble, and Embiid can force help in the interior. In theory, coach Nick Nurse can keep dangerous creators on the floor throughout the game rather than asking one combination to carry every important stretch.
The practical issue is finding the right distribution of touches. A lineup can contain several excellent scorers without creating enough space for all of them. Philadelphia needs purposeful movement away from the ball, quick decisions after the first pass and players willing to finish possessions they did not initiate.
The additions of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons expand Nurse's options. Their importance will depend on the lineup: some combinations will need more perimeter defense, others more shooting or another guard who can create offense.
Embiid's availability remains the largest uncertainty. He missed four of Philadelphia's 11 playoff games last season. Adding James and Brown reduces the burden on him to generate every difficult basket, but it does not automatically replace his size at center.
There is already a concern behind him. Adem Bona has a sprained left foot and is due for reassessment at the start of training camp. That leaves his immediate preparation uncertain and puts more attention on Ariel Hukporti and the team's smaller frontcourt combinations.
Philadelphia's ceiling is high enough to justify its place among the favorites. Its route to the title nevertheless requires several things to come together: sufficient health, a workable division of offensive responsibility and a defense that holds up when Embiid rests. The 10% probability reflects a contender with substantial potential and more unresolved fit questions than either Western leader.
New York Knicks championship outlook — 9%
New York brings the strongest recent championship evidence. The Knicks finished the 2026 playoffs 16-3, and Jalen Brunson scored 45 points in the title-clinching victory over San Antonio.
Coach Mike Brown retains Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart. Keeping that starting group allows New York to build on established responsibilities while several challengers learn new combinations.
Brunson is recovering from offseason surgery on his left wrist and is expected to enter training camp without restrictions.
Brunson provides the primary shot creation, but Towns' role makes the attack more difficult to reduce to one matchup. His shooting pulls a big defender away from the basket, and his passing gives New York another place to begin possessions. Anunoby and Bridges can take demanding wing assignments, while Hart's rebounding helps finish defensive possessions and create additional offensive chances.
The most meaningful loss is Mitchell Robinson, who joined Boston. Andre Drummond arrives as the replacement backup center, but the Knicks must still demonstrate that their new frontcourt rotation can supply the same defensive and rebounding answers in difficult playoff matchups.
That issue becomes more important if Towns misses time or encounters foul trouble, forcing the reserve centers into larger roles.
The championship run also set a demanding shooting standard. The Knicks led the postseason in three-point accuracy, while opponents made only 31% of their threes against them. It would be aggressive to assume both advantages repeat at the same level through another four rounds.
New York's 9% probability leaves it behind Philadelphia despite a much more settled team. The case for the Knicks is that they already know how their best lineups function under postseason pressure. The case against making them the overall favorite is that maintaining last spring's efficiency, health and interior depth is a substantial ask in a stronger field.
Three factors that could decide the 2027 NBA title
1) Which contenders can keep their best lineups together?
Availability affects more than the number of stars active for a playoff game. It determines how much time a team has to establish its rotations, refine defensive coverage and settle late-game responsibilities.
Philadelphia has the greatest integration challenge among the leading four. Oklahoma City's concern is different: its core is familiar, but another interrupted season for Williams would leave fewer opportunities to develop the combinations needed against San Antonio. A strong record alone will not answer whether either team has built enough continuity for May and June.
2) Who can score when the first action fails?
Over a seven-game series, opponents repeatedly adjust to a team's preferred play. Championship offenses need an effective second action after the initial pick-and-roll, post entry or drive is stopped.
For the Spurs, that means translating their guard depth into reliable half-court offense. For the Sixers, it means turning individual talent into possessions that do not stall while each star waits for a turn. Oklahoma City and New York have established lead creators, but both still need teammates who can turn a defensive rotation into a quality shot.
3) Which playoff route leaves the fewest weaknesses exposed?
Oklahoma City and San Antonio cannot both reach the Finals. Their positions at the top of the championship market therefore come with a direct obstacle: each may have to beat the other before playing for the title.
Seeding will shape when that confrontation can happen and who holds home-court advantage. In the East, Philadelphia's depth at center and New York's replacement for Robinson could become much more important against some opponents than others. The eventual bracket will test specific lineup weaknesses that a general ranking cannot fully capture in September.
2027 NBA championship prediction
Oklahoma City is the narrow choice to win the 2027 NBA championship.
The strongest argument is the combination of Gilgeous-Alexander's dependable scoring and a defense that can keep games competitive without exceptional shooting. The Thunder also have a clear route to improvement over their last playoff exit: more consistent availability from Williams and productive minutes from Wallace and Mitchell in expanded roles.
San Antonio is close enough that the prediction would change if Oklahoma City's perimeter departures prove more disruptive than expected. Wembanyama presents the most difficult individual matchup for the favorite, and the Spurs have already demonstrated that they can win that series.
Philadelphia has the widest range of plausible outcomes among the four. Its best lineups could become formidable, but that conclusion depends on health and fit that have yet to be demonstrated together. New York offers greater continuity and a proven postseason attack, making the defending champion a serious challenger despite sitting fourth in the market.
The early order is Oklahoma City by a small margin, with San Antonio the clearest alternative. A 22% favorite is a starting position, not a prediction of dominance.
What could move the NBA championship odds during the season?
Training camp and the opening weeks should reveal how the leading teams intend to use their changed rosters. Oklahoma City's perimeter rotation, San Antonio's guard combinations and Philadelphia's distribution of minutes around its stars will provide more meaningful evidence than preseason scoring totals alone.
For Philadelphia, Bona's recovery and the performance of the reserve centers will help establish how much flexibility Nurse has when Embiid is unavailable. For New York, the key early question is whether its revised frontcourt can preserve defensive possessions without increasing the burden on Towns.
Later, sustained performance against strong opponents, material trades and the emerging playoff bracket can change the assessment. A team that adds a dependable rotation player or resolves a recurring defensive weakness may improve its championship outlook without making a dramatic move in the regular-season standings.
