Tampa Bay heads to Dallas still searching for its first win after a 17-14 loss to Green Bay, while the Cowboys return home at 2-2 following a 34-30 comeback victory over Houston. Dallas has the stronger quarterback situation and the more explosive passing game, but Tampa Bay's defense has kept games close enough to make the matchup less straightforward than the 84% market position first suggests.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys prediction
Dallas deserves to be the clear favorite because the quarterback matchup has changed dramatically. Baker Mayfield remains sidelined with a dislocated right thumb, and Todd Bowles has confirmed that undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels will make his second NFL start on Thursday night. Daniels showed composure and mobility against Green Bay, but Dallas can ask him to win from the pocket in a way the Packers did not consistently manage.
The Cowboys' offense is the strongest argument for the market gap. Dak Prescott completed 32 of 45 passes for 335 yards against Houston, while CeeDee Lamb produced a career-high 17 catches for 189 yards and the go-ahead touchdown. Javonte Williams also scored three rushing touchdowns, giving Brian Schottenheimer a more balanced red-zone attack than Dallas showed earlier in the season.
Tampa Bay's defense is the clearest reason not to treat this as an automatic blowout. The Buccaneers held Green Bay to 283 yards, 15 first downs and 2-of-10 on third down, forcing two takeaways in the second half. It was the third straight game in which Tampa Bay held an opponent below 300 total yards, evidence that Todd Bowles' defense can keep a limited offense within one or two possessions.
Dallas also has its own defensive concerns. C.J. Stroud threw for 347 yards and Nico Collins caught seven passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys. Dallas' secondary has been dealing with multiple injuries, and the unit is still integrating newly acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who played 24 defensive snaps in his debut against Houston.
That leaves Tampa Bay with a credible but narrow route. Daniels needs his legs and the run game to keep Dallas from pinning its ears back, while the Buccaneers' defense has to force turnovers or short fields. Over four quarters, though, Prescott's experience, Lamb's current form and Dallas' greater ability to create explosive plays support the Cowboys' position as heavy favorites.

Dallas Cowboys win - 84%
Tampa Bay Buccaneers win - 17%
Market data as of October 5, 2026.
Dallas holds one of the clearest favorite positions of Week 5. The Cowboys' passing-game ceiling and Tampa Bay's rookie quarterback situation explain most of the gap, while the Buccaneers' defense and Dallas' secondary injuries are the main reasons the underdog still has a plausible path.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys game outlook
Tampa Bay needs to protect Daniels from obvious dropback situations.
The rookie completed 19 of 27 passes for 148 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in his first start, while adding 55 rushing yards. His mobility gave the Buccaneers an extra answer when the pocket broke down, but he was still sacked three times and Tampa Bay has now allowed 16 sacks through four games.
That makes the run game important beyond raw yardage. Bucky Irving rushed for 61 yards against Green Bay, and Tampa Bay finished with 141 rushing yards as a team. If Irving, Kenneth Gainwell and Daniels can consistently create second-and-manageable, Bowles can keep Dallas from turning every third down into a pure pass-rush situation.
Dallas' preferred script is the opposite. The Cowboys want Prescott working from a balanced offense while Tampa Bay is forced to play from behind. Houston pressured Prescott effectively early, but he became more comfortable as the game progressed and completed all nine of his passes on a 14-play fourth-quarter drive before Williams' third touchdown.
Lamb is the matchup Dallas can keep returning to. He accounted for nearly half of Prescott's passing production against Houston and repeatedly won on intermediate routes before making the decisive catch in the red zone. Tampa Bay's secondary has played well enough to keep games close, but Dallas can force difficult choices if Lamb, George Pickens and the run game are all productive at once.
The Buccaneers' best defensive path is to make Dallas work through long possessions. Vita Vea and the front can challenge the interior run game, while Tampa Bay's coverage has been effective enough to create third downs. If the Buccaneers can prevent Lamb from producing explosive gains and force Dallas to convert repeatedly underneath, the game can stay compressed.
If Dallas builds an early two-score lead, the matchup becomes much harder for Tampa Bay. Daniels would be forced into a higher-volume passing role against a defense that can disguise pressure and attack protection. The Buccaneers need the first half to stay close enough for their defense and run game to remain central.
Team news and injuries
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Jalon Daniels will start Thursday night while Baker Mayfield continues to recover from the dislocated right thumb he suffered in Week 3. Bowles has said Mayfield is expected to miss at least three games, removing any immediate quarterback uncertainty for Week 5.
Daniels' first start was mixed but encouraging in specific areas. He used his legs well, led an 84-yard touchdown drive and did not look overwhelmed by the moment. The issue was efficiency through the air, particularly when Green Bay forced him to hold the ball and work through longer down-and-distance situations.
Tampa Bay's injury list remains relevant on a short week. Outside linebacker Rueben Bain Jr., tight end Ko Kieft and cornerback Benjamin Morrison were all out against Green Bay. Yaya Diaby, Chris Godwin Jr. and Bucky Irving were able to play after appearing on the Week 4 report, and their recovery will matter with only four days between games.
The defense remains the more reliable side of the roster. Tampa Bay forced two turnovers against Green Bay and has held three consecutive opponents below 300 total yards, keeping the Buccaneers competitive despite the offense's slow start.
Dallas Cowboys
Dak Prescott enters Week 5 after his best passing performance of the season. His 335 yards against Houston were supported by Lamb's 189-yard game, while Williams' three rushing touchdowns gave Dallas a consistent finishing option near the goal line.
The Cowboys are still working through significant defensive injuries. Defensive tackle Jonathan Bullard is expected to miss three to five weeks with a calf injury, while safety Jalen Thompson is expected to miss at least four weeks with a hamstring issue. Cornerback Cobie Durant and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown both missed Week 4.
Dallas did get an immediate contribution from Joey Porter Jr. after acquiring him from Pittsburgh. Porter played 24 defensive snaps against Houston, was targeted once in coverage and did not allow a catch. His role could expand as he becomes more familiar with Christian Parker's defense.
The short turnaround is important for both teams, but Dallas comes out of Week 4 with more offensive continuity. Tampa Bay is asking a rookie quarterback to make his second career start only four days after his first.
Key factors that could decide Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys
Can Tampa Bay keep Jalon Daniels out of third-and-long?
Daniels' mobility is an asset, but it works best when Dallas has to respect the full playbook.
If Tampa Bay creates manageable second and third downs with Irving and the quarterback run game, Daniels can use quick throws, movement passes and scrambles rather than sitting in the pocket against pressure. Repeated third-and-long situations would allow Dallas to dictate protection and force the rookie to make more difficult reads.
The Buccaneers' 5-of-12 third-down performance against Green Bay was serviceable. They need at least that level of efficiency again to prevent Prescott from controlling possession.
Can Tampa Bay slow CeeDee Lamb without opening the rest of the offense?
Lamb's Week 4 performance changes the defensive problem.
Houston could not keep him from finding space underneath or downfield, and Dallas repeatedly returned to him when the game tightened. Tampa Bay can devote extra coverage to Lamb, but that creates opportunities for Pickens and lightens boxes for Williams.
The Buccaneers' defense has been strong at limiting total yardage. This is a different test because Dallas can create explosive plays without abandoning the run.
Can Dallas' depleted secondary hold up if Daniels extends plays?
Tampa Bay's passing game is not built around high volume with Daniels, but his movement can stretch coverage.
Dallas already allowed Stroud to throw for 347 yards in Week 4, and the secondary remains short-handed. Daniels does not have to become a 300-yard passer to stress that group. He needs to extend enough plays for Godwin, Cade Otton and the other receivers to uncover after the initial route structure breaks down.
Porter's early impact helps Dallas, but the Cowboys still need disciplined coverage when Daniels leaves the pocket.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys head-to-head
Dallas won the most recent meeting 26-24 in December 2024.
That game turned on pressure and turnovers, with Baker Mayfield sacked four times and Tampa Bay committing two giveaways. The personnel has changed substantially since then, particularly at quarterback for this meeting, so the result itself carries limited predictive weight.
The more useful carryover is the style of the matchup. Dallas was able to create enough disruption to prevent Tampa Bay from finishing a late comeback, and the Buccaneers again enter this game with pass protection as one of their biggest offensive questions.
What could move Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys market price before kickoff?
Tampa Bay's short-week injury report is the main live variable. Bain, Morrison and Kieft all missed Week 4, while Diaby, Godwin and Irving were managing injuries during the practice week. Any additional absence on defense would make the assignment against Prescott and Lamb more difficult.
Dallas' secondary is the other major area to monitor. Thompson and Bullard are expected to remain out, while Durant and Overshown missed the Houston game. Any further attrition would improve Tampa Bay's chances of creating offense through Daniels' movement and extended plays.
The Cowboys' protection also matters after Houston generated pressure early in Week 4. Tampa Bay has enough front-seven talent to make Prescott uncomfortable if Dallas falls behind the chains, and a major offensive-line limitation would give the Buccaneers a clearer way to keep the score down.
The quarterback situation itself is settled: Daniels is starting and Mayfield is not expected back for this game. That certainty makes the remaining injury and protection questions more important than any late quarterback decision.
