Six teams have secured playoff spots and six remain unclaimed. Here’s how the final-week standings shape the odds, which games matter and what a playoff prediction market measures.

The regular season ends on September 27. The Cleveland Guardians lead the Chicago White Sox by one game in the American League (AL) Central, the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers are tied atop the AL West and the Arizona Diamondbacks are trying to catch the teams occupying the National League (NL) Wild Card places.
Each race has a different turning point. The White Sox have a tiebreaker advantage if they catch the Guardians. The Astros hold one over the Rangers. The Diamondbacks finished against the San Diego Padres – a team they might need to overtake.

When do the playoffs start?
The regular season ends Sunday, September 27. The best-of-three Wild Card Series begin Tuesday, September 29, followed by the Division Series on Saturday, October 3.
12 teams qualify: Three division winners and three Wild Card teams from each league. The two highest-seeded division winners in each league skip the Wild Card round. A Wild Card team earns a playoff place through its regular-season record without winning its division.
Who’s guaranteed a spot in the playoffs?
Six teams had clinched a place by the end of September 22. Some still have seeding to settle, but their playoff entry is secure.

Who can still make the unclaimed playoff spots?
The AL Central and AL West titles remain open. The Guardians are 82–75, one game ahead of the White Sox at 81–76. The Astros and Rangers are both 78–79.
The White Sox also hold the provisional third AL Wild Card place. The Rangers are three games behind them, the Toronto Blue Jays are four behind and the Baltimore Orioles are five behind. The Seattle Mariners remain mathematically alive in the AL West, but trail the Astros and Rangers by five games with five left to play.
All three NL division titles have been decided, but none of the three NL Wild Card places has been clinched. The Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Padres each stand at 87–70 and currently occupy those places. The Diamondbacks are 83–74, four games back.
Final-week series to watch
These series involve teams in the closest races discussed below. A team’s opponent doesn’t need to be in the same league for the result to affect its playoff position.

AL Central: Can the White Sox catch the Guardians?
The Guardians have the lead, but the White Sox hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. If the two finish with the same record atop the division, the White Sox take the title. That gives each result extra weight even though the teams don’t meet again.
The Guardians finish against the Red Sox and Royals. The White Sox play the Royals and Rockies. Whichever team misses the division title could still qualify through the AL Wild Card race, depending on the other results.
AL West: Astros and Rangers level entering the final stretch
The Astros and Rangers have identical 78–79 records, but the Astros own their head-to-head tiebreaker. If they finish tied for first in the AL West, the Astros take the division. The Rangers need to finish ahead to win it.
Their schedules now diverge. The Astros visit the Mariners before playing four games at the Athletics. The Rangers host the Mets, then travel to Minnesota. The Rangers also start the week three games behind the White Sox for the final provisional Wild Card place, giving them a second possible route into the playoffs.
NL Wild Card: Can Arizona close the gap?
The Diamondbacks are four games behind the Cubs, Phillies and Padres with five games remaining. They need to close that gap and move into one of the three Wild Card places under the applicable tiebreakers.
The final series gives the Diamondbacks a direct chance to gain ground on the Padres. It could decide more than the standings gap: The teams split their first 10 meetings, so their last three games will settle their head-to-head tiebreaker. The Diamondbacks have already lost that tiebreaker to the Cubs.
What happens next week?
Sunday’s final standings and any required mathematical tiebreakers determine the playoff field. There’s no extra tiebreaker game. The Wild Card Series begin on September 29, while the top two division winners in each league wait for the Division Series on October 3.
Next week’s games decide who advances through the playoffs. Entry to the playoffs is settled by the end of the regular season.
