New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills game prediction and team news
Prediction markets make the Buffalo Bills clear Week 4 favorites at 73%, with the New England Patriots at 28%. Buffalo's rushing efficiency and New England's protection problems support that gap, although the Bills' five-turnover Week 3 leaves the Patriots a route back into the game.

New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills prediction
Buffalo's 73% favorite position has a strong football case behind it, starting with the contrast on the ground. The Bills have rushed for 465 yards through three games at 5.2 yards per carry, with James Cook accounting for 346 yards at 6.0 per attempt. New England, by contrast, entered Week 4 with the league's lowest rushing success rate at 28.4%. That puts more of the offense on Drake Maye in a matchup where Buffalo can already create pressure without sacrificing numbers in coverage.
Maye's early-season form is the biggest problem for the Patriots. He has completed 51 of 80 passes for 585 yards, but has only one touchdown against six interceptions and has been sacked nine times. New England's right side was particularly stressed against Jacksonville, contributing to Maye being pressured on 41.4% of his dropbacks. With starting guard Mike Onwenu on injured reserve and A.J. Brown also unavailable, the supporting structure around the quarterback is much less stable than it was during New England's 2025 run to the AFC title.
Buffalo's pass rush is well placed to attack that weakness. Greg Rousseau already has six sacks, while Jim Leonhard's defense showed against the Chargers that it can keep the score under control even when the offense gives away possessions. Buffalo held Los Angeles to 16 points and only one touchdown despite five Bills turnovers creating repeated short-field situations.
The clearest argument against treating this as a mismatch is Buffalo's own ball security. Josh Allen threw two interceptions and lost a fumble against the Chargers, Cook fumbled on the first offensive snap and Dalton Kincaid lost another after a reception. The Bills still won 24-16, but five turnovers create the kind of game state in which a heavy favorite can lose control of the afternoon quickly.
New England also has a defensive structure capable of making Buffalo work if it can dictate coverage. The Patriots have been highly effective in man coverage early in 2026, but much less efficient in zone, where their four-man rush has struggled to create consistent pressure. Against Allen, that distinction matters. If New England can cover aggressively while keeping the quarterback contained, it has a path to forcing longer drives rather than allowing Buffalo's offense to create explosive plays and easy rushing lanes.
The overall balance still favors the Bills. Buffalo has the more reliable run game, the healthier offensive core and a defense coming off its best performance of the season, while New England is asking a struggling quarterback to operate behind a depleted line without its No. 1 receiver.

Buffalo Bills win - 73%
New England Patriots win - 28%
Market data as of September 29, 2026.
The market gives Buffalo a substantial edge. The Bills' ability to run efficiently with Cook and Allen, combined with New England's protection problems and Maye's turnover-heavy start, supports a clear favorite position. Buffalo's own five-turnover performance in Week 3 is the main reason the matchup still carries meaningful uncertainty.
New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills game outlook
Buffalo's cleanest script is to make New England defend the run before expanding the game through Allen. Cook has topped 130 rushing yards in each of the last two games, and Allen has added 114 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns through three weeks. That forces defenses to account for both designed runs and quarterback movement, creating stress before the Bills even attack vertically.
That is a difficult setup for a Patriots front that has been inconsistent against the run. New England's own Week 3 film review highlighted problems at nose tackle, particularly when Jacksonville used combination blocks to move the interior and create clean access to the second level. Buffalo's run game is more efficient than Jacksonville's and can punish the same structural weakness if the Patriots cannot win earlier in the down.
For New England, the priority is keeping Maye away from predictable passing situations. Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson have combined for 215 rushing yards, but the overall efficiency of the run game has been poor. If the Patriots are repeatedly facing second-and-long and third-and-long, Buffalo can unleash Rousseau and disguise pressure behind him against an offensive line already missing Onwenu.
New England's best offensive moments are more likely to come from selective explosives rather than sustained rushing control. Romeo Doubs leads the team with 145 receiving yards on only six catches, while Mack Hollins has 156 yards on 12 receptions. Maye still has the arm talent to attack downfield, but the timing of those shots matters: asking him to hold the ball against Buffalo's rush would play directly into the favorite's strongest defensive advantage.
Team news and injuries
New England Patriots
A.J. Brown remains on injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury in the opener and will miss the Buffalo game. His absence removes New England's primary No. 1 receiver and has contributed to a passing game in which Maye has had to distribute targets across Hollins, Doubs, DeMario Douglas and Hunter Henry.
Onwenu is also on injured reserve, leaving the offensive line without its starting right guard. The protection issues were visible in Jacksonville, where the right side surrendered nine pressures and Maye faced pressure on more than 40% of his dropbacks. Tackle Morgan Moses played through a foot issue in Week 3, adding another point of attention for a line preparing to face Rousseau.
Defensively, rookie linebacker Quintayvious Hutchins is on injured reserve. Dre'Mont Jones missed Week 3 with a shoulder injury, while safety Craig Woodson and tight end Eli Raridon were also inactive after entering the weekend with injury concerns. Their availability is important because New England's depth was already tested heavily in Jacksonville.
Buffalo Bills
Allen came out of the Chargers game with some lower-body soreness, although head coach Joe Brady said on Monday that he was not concerned about the quarterback's status. Allen has thrown for 786 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions this season while adding 114 yards and six scores on the ground.
Cornerback Christian Benford left the Chargers game with a toe injury and was later seen with a boot on his right leg. Rookie Davison Igbinosun stepped into the lineup and played 29 defensive snaps, giving Buffalo a young replacement option if Benford cannot go.
DJ Moore, Keon Coleman and Ed Oliver all entered Week 3 with injury designations but were active against Los Angeles. Defensive lineman T.J. Sanders missed the game after an appendectomy, while Ty Johnson returned from a hamstring injury to make his season debut.
Key factors that could decide New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills
Can New England slow Buffalo's run game on early downs?
This is the matchup that can dictate everything else. Buffalo leads the league in rushing success rate, while New England is trying to stabilize its interior run defense. If Cook consistently creates four- and five-yard gains and Allen remains a threat on designed runs, Buffalo can stay out of obvious passing situations and keep the full playbook available.
Can Drake Maye handle Buffalo's pass rush without A.J. Brown?
Maye's six interceptions are only part of the problem. The Patriots are also struggling to keep him clean, and Buffalo has an individual edge rusher in Rousseau who can exploit weakened protection. New England needs quicker decisions, better early-down efficiency and enough receiver separation to prevent the Bills from repeatedly forcing Maye to extend plays behind a compromised line.
Can the Patriots turn Buffalo's ball-security issues into points?
The Bills survived five turnovers against the Chargers because their defense repeatedly limited the damage. New England cannot assume the same opportunities will appear, but Buffalo's Week 3 mistakes provide the most credible underdog route. Takeaways only matter if the Patriots convert short fields into touchdowns rather than continuing their early-season pattern of drives stalling before the end zone.
New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills head-to-head
The teams split their two meetings in 2025. New England won 23-20 in Buffalo in Week 5, before the Bills answered with a 35-31 win later in the season. Those games remain more relevant than older rivalry history because Allen and Maye are still the starting quarterbacks, although Buffalo has since changed head coach and defensive coordinator.
The first meeting is a reminder that New England can win this matchup when it controls mistakes and keeps Buffalo from separating early. The second showed how quickly Allen and the Bills can erase a lead when the game becomes more open.
What could move New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills odds before kickoff?
Allen's practice participation following his lower-body soreness is one of the most important variables, even though Buffalo has not indicated significant concern. Benford's toe injury also matters because his absence would increase the responsibility on Igbinosun against a New England receiving group that still has enough vertical speed to create isolated problems.
For the Patriots, the availability of Dre'Mont Jones, Woodson and Raridon could improve depth on both sides of the ball after all three missed Week 3. The condition of New England's offensive line is especially important: any further limitation at tackle or guard would make Buffalo's pass-rush advantage more pronounced.
