We’ll go through the structure of an NFL game, how long it’ll take in real time, and what happens when they have to go to overtime. 

How long is an NFL game in real time?

An NFL game is played over 60 minutes of game action. However, the average NFL game time runs over three hours long due to being broken up over four quarters, stoppage time in between plays, and half-time. 

They can run even longer if the game goes to overtime as well, which happens if the teams are tied after the fourth quarter. 

How the 60-minute game clock breaks down

As mentioned above, an NFL game length is split up into four quarters. Each quarter is 15 minutes long with a two minute break in between. After two quarters, the teams will pause for a halftime break as well.

In a typical regular season game, the NFL halftime length is roughly 12 minutes. 

In the playoffs, holidays or a championship game however, there will often be special performances and ceremonies that push that time a bit longer. It makes for the perfect time to use the restroom or grab a snack before they get back to the action.

NFL timeouts and the two-minute warning explained

Timeouts and two-minute warnings are clock stoppers, causing games to run a bit longer than expected. Each team is awarded three timeouts per half in every game. They can use them at any time throughout the half, and when they do the clock will stop. After a 60-second pause in game action, the teams will retake the field and the game will continue. 

If a player is tackled in-bounds during the game, the clock will continue to run in between plays. This is often a time that the coaches will use their timeouts so that they can get a little extra time to talk things through.

The clock will also stop for a two-minute warning. This occurs in the final two minutes before halftime and the end of the game. Whichever team has the ball runs a play, and no matter if the clock is running or stopped, if it crosses two minutes, the clock stops and they give the two-minute warning. 

This allows teams to take advantage of a stopped clock when driving on offense, or trying to get a stop and the ball back on defense. 

NFL overtime rules: regular season vs. postseason

If the teams are still tied after regulation time, they will take a three minute break and then play a 10-minute overtime period. Teams are also given two timeouts to use in the overtime period. 

Under the current NFL regular-season overtime rules, both teams are guaranteed an opportunity to possess the ball during the overtime period. For example, if the first team to get the ball scores a field goal, the other team gets one chance to score. If the first time turns the ball over or doesn’t score, then it becomes sudden death. At the end of the 10 minute period, if the teams are still tied, the game is over.

The rules change a bit in the postseason. Instead of a 10-minute period, the two teams play a 15-minute period. Both teams are guaranteed a possession as well, and they’ll play as many quarters necessary until the game is decided. If the teams are tied after their first possessions, it becomes sudden death. 

How long is the longest NFL game ever played?

The longest NFL game in terms of gametime happened in 1971 between Miami and Kansas City. On Christmas Day, those two teams were locked in a double overtime that lasted 82 minutes and 40 seconds of game time, before Miami kicked a field goal and won the game 27-24. That was before the NFL instituted a rule that allowed the game to end in a tie after the first overtime quarter.

The longest game in terms of run time also features Miami, when they played Tennessee in 2018. The game technically lasted seven hours and eight minutes because they had to deal with two lengthy lightning delays. Officials will delay a game at least 30 minutes if there is lightning within 10 miles of the stadium.
