The Eastern Conference enters 2026-27 with far less certainty than it had a year ago. New York is the defending NBA champion, Philadelphia has assembled one of the league's most star-heavy starting groups, Boston gets Jayson Tatum back for a full season and Miami has paired Giannis Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo.
Prediction markets currently place Philadelphia first at 34%, only three percentage points ahead of New York at 31%. Boston follows at 23%, with Miami at 19%.
That order captures the central question around the East. Philadelphia may have the highest concentration of established individual talent, but it also carries the most obvious health and integration risk. New York has already proved its formula through four playoff rounds. Boston has changed one of the defining pieces of its recent era, while Miami has added the conference's most disruptive two-way force without solving every offensive spacing question.
The early prediction is New York by a narrow margin. Philadelphia has enough talent to justify the market lead, but the Knicks' continuity, half-court creation and proven playoff defense offer the cleaner path before the new-look contenders have played a meaningful game together.

2027 NBA Eastern Conference odds
The top four teams in the Eastern Conference championship market are:
- Philadelphia 76ers: 34%
- New York Knicks: 31%
- Boston Celtics: 23%
- Miami Heat: 19%

Market data as of September 21, 2026.
These percentages represent the market's assessment of each team's chances of winning the Eastern Conference playoffs and advancing to the 2027 NBA Finals. They are separate from regular-season standings or the probability of finishing with the East's best record.
Philadelphia and New York form the leading pair, but the gap is small. Three percentage points separate the Sixers and Knicks, while Boston is only eight points behind New York despite trading Jaylen Brown during the offseason. Miami sits another four points back after making the biggest individual acquisition in the conference.
The chart also shows a clear shift around the middle of September, when the leading teams moved upward together. The relative order matters more than that short-term move: Philadelphia and New York remain closely grouped, while Boston and Miami form the next tier rather than being treated as distant outsiders.
Eastern Conference odds for other listed teams
Team | Eastern Conference championship probability |
|---|---|
Toronto Raptors | 18% |
Detroit Pistons | 18% |
Cleveland Cavaliers | 17% |
Indiana Pacers | 16% |
Washington Wizards | 13% |
Orlando Magic | 13% |
Atlanta Hawks | 13% |
Charlotte Hornets | 12% |
Milwaukee Bucks | 11% |
Chicago Bulls | 11% |
Brooklyn Nets | 11% |
The depth behind the top four matters because this is not a conference where the leading contenders can assume an easy first round. Toronto, Detroit and Cleveland all sit within six percentage points of Boston, while several lower-priced teams have enough size, shooting or defensive talent to create an awkward playoff matchup.
Philadelphia 76ers Eastern Conference outlook — 34%
Philadelphia's 34% market lead is built on star power that did not exist on last season's roster.
The Sixers went 45-37 in 2025-26, finished seventh in the East and still reached the conference semifinals. They eliminated Boston in seven games before being swept by New York, doing so despite another season in which Joel Embiid's availability remained a major limitation.
The offseason has changed the ceiling.
Jaylen Brown arrives after averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists for Boston. LeBron James joins after averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists for the Lakers. Tyrese Maxey is coming off 28.3 points and 6.6 assists per game, while Embiid still averaged 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds when he was available.
That gives Nick Nurse several ways to create offense.
Maxey can push pace and attack before the defense is set. Brown can score against single coverage and punish smaller defenders. LeBron remains one of the game's best passers and can operate as a primary organizer or secondary creator. Embiid still changes a possession simply by establishing position around the foul line or block.
The challenge is less about whether the group has enough talent and more about how the roles fit.
Maxey is most dangerous when he has room to attack. Brown is best when he can get downhill rather than becoming only a spot-up option. LeBron needs enough shooting around him to preserve driving lanes. Embiid's half-court offense naturally slows the game and places him near areas those other creators also want to use.
Philadelphia has tried to support that core with more flexible pieces. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope brings perimeter defense and shooting. Anfernee Simons adds another guard who can create or work off the ball. VJ Edgecombe gives Nurse a younger athlete capable of defending and running the floor.
The biggest variable remains Embiid.
He appeared in only 38 regular-season games last season. Philadelphia can survive stretches without him because the roster is deeper and more experienced than before, but an Eastern Conference title almost certainly requires him to be healthy enough to influence several playoff series.
At 34%, the Sixers are not being treated as overwhelming favorites.
They are being treated as the team with the highest immediate ceiling if the pieces stay available and the offense finds a sensible hierarchy.
New York Knicks Eastern Conference outlook — 31%
New York has the strongest answer to every hypothetical being asked about the other contenders.
It already won.
The Knicks went 53-29 last season, swept Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals and then beat San Antonio 4-1 to win their first NBA championship since 1973. Jalen Brunson won both the Eastern Conference Finals MVP and Finals MVP, finishing the championship series at 32.6 points per game.
That postseason run matters because New York does not need to imagine how its core functions when defenses adjust possession by possession.
Brunson can still create late in the clock. Karl-Anthony Towns gives the offense a center who can score inside or pull a rim protector away from the basket. OG Anunoby can defend across multiple positions. Josh Hart supplies rebounding, transition pressure and connective passing without needing high usage.
The Knicks were already one of the NBA's best teams statistically before the playoffs. They finished 53-29, ranked near the top of the league in offensive efficiency and paired that with a top-tier defense.
The offseason was intentionally quiet.
Mitchell Robinson left for Boston, removing a valuable offensive rebounder and interior defender, while Andre Drummond arrived as a more traditional backup behind Towns. Otherwise, the championship structure remains largely intact.
That continuity is a competitive advantage in a conference where the three teams immediately around New York have all undergone major changes.
Philadelphia has to integrate Brown and LeBron. Boston has replaced Brown with Paul George and is reintegrating Tatum into a full-season workload. Miami has changed the entire offensive geometry around Giannis and Adebayo.
New York already knows how its best five fits.
The question is whether last year's postseason level can be repeated. Championship teams rarely get to run back exactly the same path, and opponents now have a full summer of film on how the Knicks attacked switches, protected Brunson defensively and used Towns as both a spacer and interior scorer.
There is also less frontcourt margin without Robinson. Drummond can supply rebounding and size, but he does not provide exactly the same mobility or playoff lineup flexibility.
Still, 31% looks like a market acknowledging both sides of the argument.
Philadelphia may have more star power on paper.
New York has the better evidence.
Boston Celtics Eastern Conference outlook — 23%
Boston is simultaneously more familiar and more different than the market price first suggests.
The Celtics went 56-26 last season despite getting only 16 regular-season games from Tatum as he worked back from his Achilles injury. They finished with one of the NBA's best offensive and defensive ratings, then lost to Philadelphia in seven games in the first round.
Brown carried much of that regular-season burden.
His 28.7 points per game and two-way responsibility helped Boston remain near the top of the East while Tatum was unavailable. Trading him therefore removes much more than scoring.
Paul George is the direct veteran replacement, but he changes the shape of the team. At his best, George supplies shooting, secondary creation and switchable perimeter defense without requiring the same volume of on-ball possessions. Boston has also added Mike Conley and Mitchell Robinson, giving Joe Mazzulla more experienced ball handling and a different kind of interior presence.
The most important addition may effectively be Tatum himself.
He averaged 21.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists in only 16 regular-season games after returning late from the Achilles injury. The 2026-27 season is expected to be his first full campaign since the injury, and a healthier Tatum changes the entire offense.
Boston can again run possessions through a large wing who scores, passes and forces help. That reduces the burden on Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, while also making George's role more complementary.
The defensive structure should remain a strength.
White remains one of the league's best defensive guards. Robinson adds rim protection and offensive rebounding. Mazzulla still has enough switchable size to change coverages from series to series.
The uncertainty is whether Boston has replaced Brown's durability and downhill pressure.
George is older and has dealt with his own availability issues. Tatum is returning to a full-season workload after a major injury. Robinson has not always been consistently available either.
At 23%, Boston sits below the two teams with the clearest recent playoff evidence.
That seems less like a judgment on the Celtics' best possible lineup and more like a reflection of how many health and role questions have to resolve at the same time.
Miami Heat Eastern Conference outlook — 19%
Miami has the simplest headline and perhaps the most complicated tactical problem.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is now a Heat player.
The two-time MVP joins Bam Adebayo to give Erik Spoelstra what may be the most physically imposing defensive frontcourt in the conference. Giannis averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in an injury-shortened 2025-26 season. Adebayo averaged 20.1 points and 10.0 rebounds while again earning All-Defensive recognition.
Defensively, the appeal is immediate.
Adebayo can switch onto guards and wings without forcing Miami into automatic help. Giannis can roam behind the play, protect the rim and close ground as a weak-side defender. Andrew Wiggins gives Spoelstra another long perimeter option around them.
The offensive fit requires more work.
Miami sent Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakučionis to Milwaukee in the Giannis trade. Norman Powell also departed. That removes a large amount of ball handling and shooting from last year's roster.
The Heat have responded with shooting.
Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. provide volume from three. Bobby Portis can stretch the floor from the frontcourt. Wiggins remains capable of spacing around drives. Those additions are important because a Giannis-Adebayo pairing naturally puts pressure on half-court spacing.
Spoelstra has several ways to manage that.
He can stagger the two stars so one of them anchors almost every non-garbage-time minute. He can use Adebayo as a screener and short-roll passer while Giannis attacks from different starting points. He can also surround the pair with three shooters and force defenses to decide whether helping at the rim is worth conceding open threes.
The concern is what happens when playoff opponents stop respecting the weaker shooters.
A seven-game series gives a defense time to load the paint, switch specific actions and repeatedly test the same spacing problem. Miami therefore needs its perimeter shooting to be reliable enough that Giannis and Adebayo are not seeing five defenders within a step of the lane.
At 19%, the Heat sit fourth among the leading contenders.
That is a cautious price for a team with Giannis and Spoelstra, but understandable for a roster that has changed dramatically and still has to prove its best two players can share the floor without compressing the offense.
Three factors that could decide the Eastern Conference
1) Which contender can keep its best players available?
Health is unusually central to the Eastern Conference hierarchy.
Philadelphia's argument depends heavily on Embiid surviving enough of the regular season to enter the playoffs in strong condition. LeBron is entering another late-career season with a significant workload history.
Boston is asking Tatum to complete his first full season after an Achilles injury while also depending on George and Robinson, two veterans whose availability has fluctuated.
Miami acquired Giannis after a season in which he played only 36 games.
New York's biggest advantage may simply be that its leading core enters without the same concentration of recent major injury concerns.
2) Which new star combinations create enough spacing?
Three of the top four contenders have fundamentally altered their offensive structure.
Philadelphia has to find possessions for Maxey, Brown, LeBron and Embiid without turning each possession into a turn-taking exercise.
Miami must create enough shooting around Giannis and Adebayo to keep the paint open.
Boston has to learn what George looks like next to a healthy Tatum rather than next to the Brown-led version of last season's team.
New York's relative continuity again becomes part of the comparison. Its spacing questions have already been tested in playoff series, even if opponents will now attack them with better preparation.
3) How much does seeding shape the path?
Winning the East still requires three playoff series.
That matters in a conference where the teams below the leading four are close enough to create difficult early matchups. Toronto, Detroit and Cleveland all sit between 17% and 18% in the current market, while Indiana remains at 16%.
A top-two seed could avoid one of the conference's strongest challengers until later in the bracket. A team that falls toward fourth or fifth may have to survive a difficult first-round series before seeing Philadelphia, New York, Boston or Miami.
The regular season therefore matters for more than home-court advantage.
It determines how many elite matchups a contender may have to solve before reaching the Finals.
2027 NBA Eastern Conference prediction
New York is the narrow prediction to win the Eastern Conference, despite Philadelphia holding the market lead.
The case is not that the Knicks necessarily have more individual talent.
Philadelphia can put Maxey, Brown, LeBron and Embiid on the same floor. Boston can pair Tatum with George, White and a deep defensive group. Miami now has Giannis and Adebayo.
New York's advantage is that fewer things have to be invented.
Brunson has already shown he can drive playoff offense against changing coverages. Towns gives the Knicks a second scorer who changes how opposing centers defend. Anunoby and Hart supply defensive versatility and connective play around them. The same core has already survived the late-game possessions and series-to-series adjustments required to win the conference.
Philadelphia is the strongest alternative.
If Embiid is healthy and the Sixers establish clear roles quickly, the 34% favorite can justify that position. Brown and LeBron provide exactly the kind of secondary creation Philadelphia has often lacked around Maxey and Embiid.
Boston may have the highest upside relative to its current price if Tatum immediately returns to pre-injury form. Miami has the single addition most capable of changing a series by himself.
The early order is therefore narrow rather than definitive: New York first, Philadelphia immediately behind, with Boston and Miami close enough that health or one successful lineup experiment could change the picture quickly.
What could move Eastern Conference odds during the season?
Philadelphia's health should create the fastest movement.
A sustained stretch with Embiid, Maxey, Brown and LeBron available together would give the market its first evidence that the Sixers' theoretical lineup can function in practice. Any recurring availability issue would have the opposite effect.
New York's question is more about sustainability. The Knicks do not need to prove their core works, but they do need to show that last spring's defense and late-game execution were repeatable rather than a postseason peak that will be difficult to reproduce.
Boston's price should respond strongly to Tatum. If he returns to a full workload and quickly resumes being the Celtics' primary creator, 23% may begin to look conservative. George's fit and Robinson's availability will matter behind him.
Miami may produce the most interesting early data. The important question is not simply how many points Giannis scores, but whether the Heat can create enough space when he and Adebayo share the court against strong defenses. Three-point volume, half-court efficiency and late-game lineup choices will reveal more than raw win totals.
By spring, the bracket should matter almost as much as the regular-season records.
The East has enough depth that the difference between finishing first and fourth could be the difference between needing to solve one elite matchup and needing to solve three.
